Alert | If you go to your control panel and click on your addremove programs list in the upper right hand corner there that says "show updates" If you put the checkmark in that box you can then remove the latest windows and office updates to see if that fixes the problems.
Let me know if that works. if not drop me an email at ttellez@gmail.com

Alert | before you spend too much time trying to figure this out.....go back to a restore point to a date before all the issues arose. Then i would go back and install the updates in small groups rather all at the same time. to go to a restore point click Start>Help and Support---In the pick a task section select >Undo changes to your computer with System Restore. The select restore my computer to an earlier time >Next Pick a date to go back to>next confirm the details >Next... DO NOT interrupt the process and follow all the steps even when it reboots.
Check and see if the problem still exists

Alert | Agit8d's suggestion is the safest. Just go back one restore prior to when you updated your computer. Then do Office Update, see if the problem comes back, then Windows Update if it doesn't.
Uninstalling updates from Add/Remove Programs can be very dangerous, if you remove the wrong one by accident. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | That's what I would do too..
| | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Joined old forum March 2006 Post count: 3068 + these | |

Alert | | I have gone back to a restore point, and it worked for some of the programs. But its saying the problem was that I upgraded so I deleted that upgrade and reinstalled it and I still have the problem. But Im thinking its a virus...everytime I do a virus scan it stops in my C drive and the computer freezes. So I tried a virus scan through a different program and it did the same thing. | | Bye Bye Maricopa!

Alert | I don't necessarily think your virus scan is failing because of a virus. It could be because of a virus, spyware, bad memory, hard drive, etc. Because you're also getting a "Failed to initialize" errors and freezing, I'm inclined to think bad memory or hard drive, but it's hard to tell over without someone physically looking at it.
Try this: Reboot your computer and as soon as you see the computer manufacturer's logo, start hitting F8 on your keyboard. Stop hitting it when you see a selection of startup options. Choose Safe Mode. Once Windows comes up in Safe Mode, try to run your virus scan. When you've finished the virus scan, you can reboot your computer. Let us know how that goes.
Whatever you do, do not start randomly removing updates. That has a real chance of making your computer worse. | | Joined: Jul 2005

True, it doesn't even always work when it's enabled. But it's worth a shot. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Alright! Im pretty sure that my hard drive is damaged! Someone feel on my computer lightly and nothing seemed to be wrong but then these problems started. Also when I do the restore and safe mode it does mention the hard drive. Im assuming this person probably broke it. Does it cost alot to replace that? My computer still freezes when I do the virus scan...and it took my computer twice as long to start back up. I have to go to work but Im still very interested in solving this problem!! I apprieciate you getting back with me so quickly too! I think everyones suggestions are getting me very close to solving the problem. | | Bye Bye Maricopa!

Alert | A basic check you can do to check if it's your hard drive is to open My Computer, right click your C: drive. Click Properties. Then go to the Tools tab. Under Error Checking click Check Now.. Check off both boxes and then click Start. It will tell you it needs to schedule the check for the next restart. Click Yes and then restart your computer.
There is the chance that if you try this and there is a problem with your hard drive you might lose your data. Make sure to have a current backup before doing this. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | If you just want to look at your Office Word document: right click the Word document file 'open with' 'chose program' 'Word Pad'.
I think Word Pad also opens up Office Word files. I deleted my trial copy of Office and use Word Pad to open any Word documents. If all else fails, backup everything (including IE Favorites & Email & Email contacts) and do a full out of the box recovery.

Alert | copy and paste the entire tetx below and save it as chkdsk.bat. open my computer then click Tools>folder Options>View Tab remove the check mark for hide extensions for know file types. This bat file will clean up temp file reboot and run a check disk. If you get an error at the end and it does not automatically reboot the reboot manually... when it restarts let the process finish. it may take 20-40 min depending on the state of the drive.
copy and paste below:
Title Hard Drive Cleaner Windows 2000 & XP PC's
color 0e @echo off
echo. echo Hard Drive Cleaner Utility Version 1.2 Written by Alex Plaza 4/17/2005 echo Please allow 20 to 40 minutes for this utility to run. echo. echo Please close all open applications first. echo. echo The following section is for deleting TEMPORARY echo cashed files, aka GARBAGE, TRASH, JUNK, echo on the local C: drive and in your Personal Login profile. rem Please do not edit these path statements. echo. echo First, this utility will delete any and all files echo and folders in the C:\WINNT\TEMP directory.\ echo These files are garbage and not needed. echo Any files in use will NOT be deleted. rem pause del C:\WINNT\Temp\*.* /f /s /q rmdir C:\WINNT\Temp\ /s /q
del c:\windows\temp\*.* /f /s /q rmdir C:\windows\temp\ /s /q
echo. echo This next statement deletes all temp files and echo folders that are created via e-mail attachments, echo viewed documents, etc...from your personal profile echo on this PC. Remember, these are all GARBAGE files echo hampering the performance of your PC. echo Again, any files in use will NOT be deleted. echo. rem pause del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\*.*" /f /s /q del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp\*.*" /f /s /q rmdir "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp\" /s /q
echo. echo Next, lets clear all the recently viewed document links. echo They will be removed from your START, DOCUMENTS, list echo on your desktop. Please note that this IS a good thing to do. echo Every time you open a document a link is created echo taking up room on the hard drive. These links are echo NEVER removed and this area just keeps building, echo wasting space. Didn't know that huh? echo. rem pause del "%USERPROFILE%\Recent\*.*" /f /s /q
echo. echo This next section deletes and removes echo ALL Temporary Internet files and folders. echo This is the major GARBAGE collection point on the hard drive. echo Cleaning up this area will GREATLY improve performance and echo drive space on the PC. echo. rem pause del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\*.*" /f /s /q del "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*.*" /f /s /q rmdir "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\" /s /q del "C:\WINNT\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*.*" /f /s /q rmdir "C:\WINNT\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\*.*" /s /q
echo. echo This last section allows for a automated check disk to perform. echo This utility scans the hard drive for corrupted system files echo and bad blocks then replaces them if needed. This process alone echo can improve the performance of your PC by 80 percent. echo This also requires that the PC be rebooted in order to complete echo which will be done when this utility finishes. echo The average time is 20 to 40 minutes and can run as high as echo 2 hours depending on the state of the hard drive. echo Please note.....Once this process has run one time, echo the next time will be only 20 to 30 minutes. echo. rem pause
echo off
rem This section allows for a automated check disk to perform. echo y| chkdsk c: /f /r
rem This section allows an automatic reboot of the PC. %SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 1 c:\winnt\inf\volume.inf

Alert | You might want to fix those last few lines, there is no need to go messing with drivers to get a reboot. Just do:
shutdown /r /t 0
You can also condense the separate WINNT and WINDOWS lines using %WINDIR% or %SYSTEMROOT% | | Joined: Jul 2005
