Alert | | If you look in your router's configuration pages you should see something that allows you to stop broadcasting its SSID. This won't prevent anyone from connecting, but the casual Windows user won't see your network. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Put the password on and also there is a feature on ours that only allows the user we want to connect. I just listed the IP's that I am allowing access. If you don't have access, then you will be sitting there for 30 mins waiting to connect to nothing.
| | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Joined old forum March 2006 Post count: 3068 + these | |

Yes, the best way to prevent this is to enable WPA or if that isn't available, WEP encryption. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | Jason, shame on you, after all that discussion about WPA being the best out there and nothing will compare and you dare offer WEP! Just go the extra mile and say MAC address filtering if those are not available. LOL

Alert | | if you have a wireless connection, but it is WPA protected....no one can pick up webcam feed right? Beacause it is on your protected wireless connection...right? | | Who's using me, what should we do? Because you can't be a pimp and a prostitute too. - White Stripes

Alert | | As long as you pick a sufficiently strong passphrase no one will be able to break your WPA encryption. Something that is at least 15-20 characters, contains both letters and numbers and doesn't consist of words from the dictionary. | | Joined: Jul 2005 |

Alert | | Jason, I read what you posted, and I stand by the comment, for the lay person that may not understand or can not get WPA going, which Sir if you recall was the last conversation we had and several of us tried to say something is better than nothing you would not budge. Now you suggest something else if that is not available. So if its not available its ok to have a less than secure network, but for someone that does not understand or can't get it going but maybe could on the lessor of the evils that is not ok? I know you are the man but...

Alert | | Look: If you're in the router setting up WEP, you can set up WPA. There is no learning curve over WEP as you seem to imply. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | I can't help it that you don't read enough on the subject...
When the stakes are that high and the feature is free and a no-brainer to turn on, you'd have to be stupid to recommend anything else. This isn't paranoia. But feel free to post if you have facts to support your position (and I mean facts you can link to, not mere unsubstantiated opinion).
You might also recall that you recently guessed that AZSUN's problem was IE and not something, else. Well guess what, it was something else. I believe you also falsely said that ping was not the proper tool to check for connectivity because AZSUN <i>just had</i> to be on dial up. So go ahead, slap whatever label you want on yourself, but I have proven that I know what I'm talking about. <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'> <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/cool.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Cool' align='absmiddle'> | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | For Christ sake's Jason, you would think the Hacking Nazi's are out to get everyone. Paranoia is not the word here. You Sir act like someone is one every street driving around trying to hack every signal there is. Sounds like some serious paranoia to me. I bet you have rotating lights and alarms in your house set up just in case someone bumps your signal? Geez, glad I decided to just stay away.

I basically said: "better safe than sorry" which is a good sentiment, seeing as how much identity theft there is. You blew it out of proportion and now hope to knock down the straw man you built. | | Joined: Jul 2005
