We're thinking of switching to Direct TV (from Orbitel) and just wanted to see if anyone has feedback on the service. Orbitel is over $80 for cable (with HD channels), DVR HD box, and an extra standard box. Seems like DirectTV is cheaper than that and has a lot more HD channels.

I searched around some old threads and read about some issues with quality but it seemed that they only happened a few times a year due to the sun or something like that.

Do you have Direct TV and how is the quality? Does it go out in storms/rain/wind? Have you been happy with it? Know where to get any deals?

Thanks!!

We have been very happy with DirecTv but do not have the HD stuff. We lost signal for a few moments in the worst of the storm this past weekend, but other then that it's usually fine. We have the bundle thing through Qwest with TiVo and 2 extra boxes, with phone and DSL we pay $120.

We knew when we signed our papers for our house and the Orbitel thing that we were getting DirecTv. We have had it for the past 10 years and have been please (hubby especially).

No complaints with DirecTV, didn't even lose signal during this last storm. You can see demos of the HD service in Best Buy and it looks quite good. The only deals I can think of would be one of two ways:

Calling them and telling them that Dish has a free HD DVR promotion and asking if they can match that works sometimes. You might have to call several times to find a rep that is willing and has the power to do that.

The other way would be if you are looking to get a new HDTV, Best Buy is running a promotion where if you sign up in the store, they will take $300 off the TV. If you go this route, don't let them con you into buying a $99 receiver in the store, DirecTV will give you a basic HD receiver for free. Also, if you need a new HD DVD player and/or home theater system, they will take another $100 off the TV for each of those. You can get a great deal, $500 off, but don't fall for their overpriced installation or cables.

Overall, we're much happier with DirecTV than Orbitel. Although it was years ago, Orbitel had problems with sound on some channels. They were never able to fix it. Also if you compare the channels, DirecTV currently has the largest number of HD channels, with a commitment to add more the first half of next year.

Directv is running a special now. $39.99 for over 200 channels, free DVR, free NFL package for the rest of the season and over 30 premium movie channels free for 3 months. It will cost me a total of $44.98 a month because I want an extra room done. Install is free. After 12 months it goes up $20 a month. Goodbye Orbitel!

Thanks for the replies. That promotion sounds good. The only problem is for HD they charge like $200-300 for the HD DVR. I hate to have to pay that much just for equipment that I may not even use after a year or two. We'll probably try calling and seeing if they can give us a free HD DVR since that's what Dish does.

good luck on the free hd dvr, the demand is there for the HDDVR so people like myself, continue to buy them. we have 2 of the HDDVRs, one in the front and one in our bedroom and they are fantastic. what really stinks is the 200-300 they charge for the HDDVR, is really just a lease. u dont own the receiver, u just lease it from them which i think stinks but what can ya do i guess.

Directtv is the best by far. btw the new 5LNB sat dish you need for HD signal is too big for the eaves of your house and will have to go on your patio covering or on the block wall in the backyard like mine does.

I believe if you are leasing when a new model receiver comes out you can trade up at no cost but if you buy there is no tradein.

HD is awesome on my 50 plasma. Orbitel and most other cable companies don't even compare.

I've had direct tv for a few years and wanted to upgrade to HD with the DVR. I got the unit for $99 and they installed it 2 days later.

When they tell you it is $299 ask to speak to a manager and tell them you will just go with Dish network. They'll give you the $99 deal.

Actually I just upgraded to the DVR and yes they wanted to charge me the 299 for the new receiver. I pushed far enough to get it for $19.99 and that was just for the installation. Also got 3 months of HD free as well. So it just depends on how far you want to go. I alos threatend to go to DishNetwork and that tactic does work.

free NFL package for the rest of the season

Watch your bill! They will auto-renew this NFL package next year unless you call to stop it. Learned the hard way - my husband just pays the bills, didn't look too closely. We don't even like football! LOL
