Alert | Most of the time, the video file is too large to email. Thirty minutes of video on a DVD is over 1GB file size as a VOB file. Even compressing it to create a wmv file won't work because of size limitations on email servers.
IF this is a burned DVD not a stamped DVD, open the DVD file. You'll see Video_TS. Double click and open. Look for the the DVD video files - usually labeled as VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2 etc You'll need to copy that to your computer and then use another software to convert it to a windows video file.
I use a software called Pro Show Gold (or Pro Show Producer - more bells/whistles and more $$$) by PhotoDex. Import the VOB file, create a video file, custom, Windows Media - email type.
I just did a test video - 21 seconds of video created a file 585KB.

Alert | You'll need to transcode it from MPEG2 to WMV for this to happen. Like Fritzy said, DVD files can be big, but if you have a program that gives you the option, you can shrink it down, by lowering the resolution and bit-rate (quality). I think Nero will do this. Don't rely on a Google search for a DVD to WMV converter, because there is so much out there that is full of spyware.
Also, there is no need to copy the VOB files (or any files) from the DVD. The program you use should be able to do it for you.
Is this a homemade DVD or commercial? If it is commercial, you're probably out of luck unless you're willing to risk going to jail. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | It is a 56-second video recorded on a digital camcorder, the kind that records on a mini-DVD.
It was taken by a friend in Minnesota who asked me if I knew how to convert it to a WMF so it could be shared via email. I had no idea as I don't own a digital camcorder other than the one in my digital camera, which I have never used.
I'll relay the information. My friend and I thank you guys for taking the time to help.

Alert | Ahhh... more information! Could be a much easier process. Does the camera have a firewire output? Or USB to computer connection? If so, connect the camera to the computer. DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE CAMERA POWERED ON - YOU'LL FRY IT! Turn the camera on - windows movie maker should open up. If not, open Win Movie Maker. Capture from video device and follow prompts. It will ask what you want to do with the file - use the low resolution settings to create the smaller file. Voila - you have a wmv file suitable for email.

Thanks again, Fritzdoodle. I'm sorry I didn't tell the whole story up front! I'm not very savvy on this stuff ... needless to say! I've forwarded your additional info and we'll see what they can do with it.
