I am looking for two new TVs, one that is over 50" and one that is 32-42 inches. I have looked at the Consumer Report, but wanted to get your opinions on what to look for.

Also, we have DTV which is pretty much hi-def now, do I have to get new receivers and TiVo boxes?

Where do you recommend looking? I am a loyal consumer at Best Buy, but have never priced TVs there.

Any comments would be helpful!

#1. I honestly don't recommend to buy locally. You'll get a much better deal online from a reputable company and a great warranty. If you must go local check out COSTCO due to their phenominal return policy. See my website recommendation below about looking for the right TV, and they'll give you lots of great online resellers as well.

#2. It's going to have a LOT of factors. How far away will you sit? How is the room lit, etc?

My recommendation is go to www.avsforum.com and hit up their forums. It's probably the most resourceful place you will find when it comes to A/V stuff.

I picked up an OPTOMA RD50A DLP HDTV a few years ago. THe set is PHENOMINAL (nobody's heard of it cause Optoma normally only does projectosrs, but they made a CES award winning set for a while). They pointed me toward it and I couldn't be happier.

Check that site. Try to give them as much info about the location, viewing angles, room size, and sitting distance as you can because it all makes a difference.

Plus... what will you be doing (gaming, tv only, movies, hdtv, hd-dvd/bluray, etc)?

Lastly... to answer your other question. Yes, to get HDTV you need to get new boxes, but DTV should probably supply those. Give them a call. I, personally, am going with DishNetwork. They have a free HD-DVR deal going right now w/ signup, and they have a cool setup where you can have 2 DVR's that talk to each other so you can stream shows from 1 DVR to the other TV so I can see both DVR's shows on 1 tv if I want... its pretty sweet.

From your soon to be 85239 neighbor,
Dave K

(hopefully moving first of the year to our first house)

ps ps. Sorry for the horrible grammar, and lack of a spellecheck. I'm at work and finishing up my shift so I'm multi-tasking.

Forget Costco, they've limited to 90 days. Sam's is still unlimited.

DirecTV has a better lineup and works great. It's cheaper too if you bundle with Qwest.

I won't be using it for gaming, just watching. We have a 55" Hitachi rear projection that I like but is starting to show its age, almost 8 years. I wouldn't mind another rear projection since we have this huge entertainment center that it looks great in, but we could always get a stand instead, I guess.

The second smaller one will be for the bedroom, appx 16 feet from the head of the bed. We have a 27" there now, it is good, but I would like it a bit bigger.

Jason, if I already have DTV service are they going to charge me for the new receivers? I know Best Buy sells the top rated TVs that we read about, so I think we will go there to check them out.

Thanks!

Do you have DirecTV? I asked for their retention department and they gave us the receiver for free. Just mention you were thinking about switching, Dish has better prices and you want to find out if DirecTV can match it.
