Anyone else try this? Do you have any pictures of the setup? I want to try this but don't want to get in trouble with my HOA with the antenna.

i dont believe the HOA can stop you from mounting an antenna, but dont quote me on that as im not positive.

By law if you own your home no HOA can stop you from putting an antenna onto your house.

I remember fighting this with the Sprint lawyer against my old HOA back in the 90s, it was a communication/education thing they had no right to stop it.

An update on Transcend, and also my first post! I am a PC tech in town and I just made the switch from Maricopa Broadband to Transcend a week or so ago, and have news to report on it.
I live less than a quarter mile away from the antenna in Maricopa (It's located by the VW proving grounds off their property. It's the red and white one.)
So far the service has been pretty good. Upload speeds went from 1 mb. with MBB to 3-4.5 mb. with Transcend. Download speeds remained about the same... between 4 and 6 mb. I am not too concerned with the download speed, however it could be about twice as high as it currently is. I'll call them about it soon. I'm absolutely ecstatic over the upload speeds. It's 3-4 times higher than anything I have ever used before. My issue is latency, which ranges from 30 ms to up to 10 seconds. This doesn't seem to be website related, computer related or time related, so if there is one flaw, that's it.
The phone call to get the service was great. I spoke with a man named Jeff who was courteous and very helpful. They set me up with a next day install, and the tech made it out several hours early (he woke me up, actually). This was great, because I got some time to play with the service before work. The entire install took 45 minutes or so, and the tech answered every single question I had (they have 200 mb throughput at that tower for one thing... And they use the 5.3-5.4 ghz frequency, they call it wimax).
The antenna was small, about a foot squared, and they used black Ethernet cable to string it into my room. Besides the antenna and the cable, there's a small device that plugs into your electrical socket, with another Ethernet cable that comes from it to your pc or router.
So to quickly sum up, because it's 1 am, and I have work in a few hours... I like it so far. It's amazing for Bittorrent, and big downloads, and I haven't had any problems with signal. Loading web pages however take noticeably longer than with Maricopa Broadband.

We,, I got an update on Transcend broadband. Unfortunately they were unable to install the antenna because there is a 2 story blocking my view to their tower.

I have to call it quits with Transcend.

I had a tech out to fix my cat5 connection, they do a B config and cut the brown wires out if you don't use the phone service, but it barely got any better.

My MBB connection beat it in download speeds everytime, ping times when I'm playing are better on MBB. But the upload is huge, I get 2-3mbps also. But playing internet games and downloading movies and such this doesn't do much for me.

I have mine unplugged right now, it lays defeated upon my computer room floor.

I hope Cox shows up sometime in our neighborhood and I get get my 1.1meg download speeds again with 40ms ping times...

we tried transend for about a week and a half, i life about 1/4 mile from the tower, and the best speeds i was getting is in the 3-6 mbps range.....

Internet was fast, downloading was excellent...gaming on the other hand was horrible....
I'm on x-box live for all of 5 minutes before my connection dies, can't play wow because every 20 minutes or so i get kicked off, i've had enough of it, canceled yesterday, getting back with maricopa broadband in the morning...

If we didn't game, it would be a diffrent story as it does save on our phone and internet all bundled as one

so if your an online gamer, beware your going to have issues

Posts can be removed for more than just offensive content. I had one removed because supposedly users couldn't handle an IFrame on the page. People couldn't handle two scrollbars? Oh well...

So I was looking into this and noticed when you go to their website that it says only 6 Meg down available here in town. My neighbor is getting better than 8 with Maricopa broadband. But I like to game online. so this is not an option for me then?

I have had something like this before I think it was called sprint broadband. Anyway it's no good for gaming because of the way it works. You don't get a constant bandwidth it can go up to what they say but only for a short time then comes down to almost zero then back up again. Kind of like a burst of bandwidth then it cuts off. This will cause hi latency and that is bad for games. Runs in half-duplex

is Orbitel bad? I tried Qwest and was told I would get their 7Mbs down, but turns out my community only has their VDSL, the 3Mbs down. I was actually getting about 600 Kbs down most of the weekend. I play WoW too. Or try at least with these speeds.

So, based on what I'm hearing, TBB is a no, MBB is a maybe, any other options that I haven't heard of yet?

Qwest VDSL was horrible. Was unable to do anything. Not good for gaming or VOIP.

I can't affect my WOW(Cenarion Circle Realm) playing either, so I won't be going to Qwest VDSL or Transcend either.

Overall Orbitel has been really good for me. For a while latency was high during peak times, but that seems to have been resolved. I game on it all the time with low latency and DL speeds have been good. I don't have any #s to back me up but I could probably get some.

pfunk - what did you go with then?

jamest - what part of town are you in? I'm in Glennwilde, hoping to see if Orbitel is good in that area.

Does anyone have MBB in Glennwilde that could comment on how it is there?

SBD and Transcend use a completely different RF layer to deliver data.
Speeds will vary due to more users on the network. Cable modems work the same way. Here's a little secret when using SBD. Open 3 ping sessions and you will more than likely keep a dediacted channel to yourself.

I am currently using MBB. It's not great, but it's the best option I have.

VDSL is designed to support 100mb, but qwest needs to up their infrastructure to actually "support" it.

I thought I’d share my experiences with Transcend…

We have received around 4 or 5 flyers in the past month or so – both in the mail and on our door. We’ve also had a couple of guys knock on the door selling their service. Normally, I would ignore all of this – but our service with Maricopa Broadband has been so terrible the past 3 months or so, I was willing to explore other options.

I called the name on the flyer and spoke with ‘Brian.’ He was very nice and answered all of my questions. Specifically asked about latency, speed, and gaming. He said the latency was lower, speed was faster, and gaming would be better. He told me some people in Tortosa were getting an average of 10 megabits throughput on downloads. (You know how the salespeople always tell you what you want to hear)

Transcend came out last Thursday to do the install. Installation was fairly smooth. The installer, ‘J.J’ who came out was really nice and easy to work with. He had us up and running in about an hour. When he left, the internet was working, but he said there was a problem with the VOIP adaptor, but that it would be working within an hour or so. After a couple of hours of it still not working, I called Tech Support (approx 9:00 PM - waited on hold for 25 minutes) and asked about the phone. I was told there were not enough IP addresses allocated to VOIP on my sector. Apparently, I’m on a new ‘Sector’ and am one of the first installs… I also asked about speed. At the time, I was only getting 2-4 megabit download speeds on my connection. I was told ‘They are working on it’ and speed should improve. Next morning, phone adaptor came up like a charm, but my speed hasn’t improved.

The installer told me we had one of the long-range radios on our roof. I thought that was kind of odd since I live in Tortosa and am probably less than a quarter-mile from the tower they use. The tech support guy ran the signals and told me both my downlink and uplink signals were excellent.

I haven’t cancelled Maricopa Broadband, so I’ve been able to test Transcend and Maricopa Broadband side-by-side for the past few days. Here’s what I’ve seen… I’ve tested the ping times from my computers to the default-gateways. Maricopa Broadband latency is much lower – around 8-20ms compared to the Transcend latency of 40-120ms. I’ve also noticed that the Transcend ping times vary quite a bit. There doesn’t seem to be much consistency. It’s just like what I was reading in this thread.

As far as speed goes, I’ve tested download speeds for both Transcend and Maricopa Broadband on many different sites (speedtest.net, dslreports.com, speedtest.cablerocket, net, downloading Windows XP SP2 from Microsoft web site, etc). Maricopa Broadband and Transcend seem to be pretty close, but Maricopa Broadband is generally faster on downloads across the board. I know 15 megabits is the ‘highest’ possible speed, so I was expecting slower average speeds. I’m not getting anywhere near the 15 megabit download speeds Transcend promises. My average Transcend download speed is around 3 to 4 megabits while Maricopa Broadband is around 5 to 6 megabits. Transcend upload speeds are VERY fast though – Usually around 2-3 megabits consistently.

I work as a network/systems administrator and spend quite a bit of time on-line using our VPN, Citrix, and VOIP systems. I specifically work with our Cisco Routers and Switches and all of our WAN links, so being able to get on-line with decent speed is a must for me. If I can’t get on-line, then that means a 35 mile trip to work! From my testing, my VPN and Citrix and VOIP work fine with Transcend. I haven’t tried gaming yet. I intend to do so in the next day or so.

I haven’t made my final decision about Transcend. I’m definitely not pleased with the speed. It should be faster. Maricopa Broadband speed has definitely improved in the last week or so. I think Maricopa Broadband finally added a new DS-3 to provide additional bandwidth. It makes it hard to stay with Transcend. My next conversation with Transcend Tech Support may determine whether or not I stay with them!

Anyway, I hope this helps you guys out with any decisions you make towards Maricopa Broadband or Transcend!
