I got a flyer about Transcend Broadband the other day and was about to trash it when I glimpsed the bandwidth they were selling.

15megs for 50 bucks a month.

Checking into it their website is here:
http://www.transcendbroadband.com/residential-broadband.php

I've never heard of OFDM Wireless Internet but I did have Sprint wireless awhile ago and it was horrible in the valley. You couldn't game on it at all and the sparatic download speeds drove me nuts.

This is supposed to be new technology and I've not read anything bad about it, is anyone already using it and can you do gaming with it online? I'm curious what constant ping times people are getting.

I have a buddy who works for these guys. He says they have a very sound network. It may be worth looking in to.

Interesting that the web site claims up to only 6 MBPS...

A solicitor dropped one of the flyers on my door the other day too. I was kind of intrigued, so I hopped on their website. I thought it was rather strange the flyer said 15 Mb and the site said 6 Mb. At that point I wrote them off as being just like Orbitel... advertise one thing and deliver another. But who knows... maybe not.

Plus with that 25 bucks a month package, you need to commit to a 2 year contract!

Sprint has been upgarding the entire CDMA nationwide network to EVDO Rev. A. This allows for download speeds of 800-1200kbps and uploads of around 400kbps. Now the really cool thing they are doing is building out a WiMax network. This will allow for mobile or fixed speeds of 6mbps.

Phoenix is one of the markets that will be built. WiMax is 802.16 and is based on OFDMA.

Well I took the plunge and they are going to install this next week, I've got two months to cancel before the contract becomes solid.

I shall report back what happens and if this works well for our area.

Cool, I might sign up, too. I have Maricopa Broadband right now and the connection is terrible. Bittorrent shuts down constantly meaning I can't DL patches for my games, let alone play any games decently now.

I won't even look into them....

Simply for the fact that they left their garbage (the flyer) at my house...

I hit a blip in my install. The techs that arrived at my house were very nice and knew what they were doing and how to best install the hardware. The normal spots where they install these dishes are on the flashing but mine is blocked by a house down the street viewing their antenna. The max they could get out of it down low was 10mbps.

Their one antenna they mentioned celltech was across the street from the Volkswagen proving grounds.

So I went and picked up a tile roof mount from a Phoenix based company:

When they were on the peak of my roof the techs said it was optimum connection conditions and should get the full 15mbps they promise. Hopefully I can reschedule an install for this week.

A business customer of mine had Transcend in Eloy and it was very fast. I didn't test latency or anything though so I have no idea if it's good for online gaming or not. I'm interested in hearing how people like it and if it's any good in Maricopa.

Well I got the tech to install my setup last night, only problem is he had the wrong antenna. They have two flavors of wireless one for long range and another shorter range; the guy only had the short range setups and he needed a long range. I still got connected but the speeds were half of what they could be, so they are coming today to swap out the antennas.

Right now I’m downloading at about 500k and my ping times are 120-220ms while playing various online games.

With Transcend setup only half way operational, I’m matched to what I am doing on my ‘fully’ function Maricopa Broadband cable modem.

So I’m sold.

I’ll post more details once I get things corrected and can run some full bandwidth tests.

That sucks it's line of sight technology. It reminds me of a project I was involved called Sprint Broadband Direct.

Is the antenna like a pizza box, or similar shaped? Does the antenna point towards the Altell tower by VW? Also what kind of modem does it connect to in your house? Thanks

Yeah, a lot like Sprint Broadband Direct, some sort of microwave technology.

Let me know how your ping goes once you get the long range.

I do have an update.

The Transcent tech came out and installed a new antenna, but when he was connecting up things in my house he redid the cat5 connection three times. I finally asked the guy if he needed help but he declined my assistance.

Looking at it now, I should have insisted, there are bare shield wires in the crimp with the lines running data, power or both. I called Transcend and they have a tech coming out again on 11/9 to make sure all the cables are setup properly.

My ping times gaming are not so great, 80 to 300ms, a lot of variation in there.
Download times range from 400k to 900k solid, but not close to the 1200k they should be.

The slow down I get when I use my cable modem I do not see using Transcend.

So again, I'm limping along here, I'm on the fence if I will keep them with the turn around time for a tech at a week and a half. If they come out and find there are issues with the cable like I believe there are I will ask they give me an additional 30 days to test this out.

They must have some untrained installers if an RJ-45 connector causes him grief. Thanks for the update!

Anyone else try this? Do you have any pictures of the setup? I want to try this but don't want to get in trouble with my HOA with the antenna.
