Im thinking of getting a 360 and just wondering how 360 owners like xbox live? I have been a online gamer on the computer for many years (WOW, Unreal Tourney, Half Life, Counter Strike ect...) and thinking of making the jump to console online gaming. Seems to be getting more and more popular. Anyone else make the jump and can compare? One of the main reasons is I want to get back into sports gaming and that isnt very popular on hte comp. THX

XBox Live is awesome. Very well put together with great functionality and plenty of free downloads and user options. Nothing comes close. However, your gaming experience will always be directly related to your abilities and BROADBAND throughput. Good Luck. Maybe visit a friend that has it and check it out first.

From what I've heard, Sony PoS3 is nowhere close to having the online features of XBox Live.

PS3 really isnt a option anyway. If I jump into the Xbox live its gonna be with Halo 3 and Madden. Its jsut a matter of getting use to a controller rather than a mouse and keyboard. I do very well on comp games but recently tried playing Halo 2 against a bud on the Xbox and he steamrolled me cause I just couldnt react with the controller fast enuf and aiming was tough. Im too sue to comp. Madden was much more forgiving. I got my revenge there.

One of the biggest reasons I want to start this whole xbox live thing (start the violins) is because now that I am in my 30's and moved to Copa I have pretty much lost my friends I use to hang out with and play console games with. I have a group of friends I play online with on the computer but its mostly WOW and I want to get back into the Madden and FPS types. I hate playing against the computer because its really no competition. I miss the old days of hanging out drinking a few beers and having good ol madden wars and such. Figure If I can get hooked up on Live I can play these against some real people again. Just havent met any around here yet.

Pizzaking,
I completely understand! The major driving force behind my 360 purchase was moving out here and not knowing anyone. There was a thread on the old 85239 about a Halo 2 night which later turned into Gears of War night. Buy a 360, attend a gaming night, instant friends!

We still get together, though our numbers have dwindled a little bit (for various reasons). The best part about Xbox Live is that if we don't have a full house, we can always just get on Live to fill the rest of the slots!

I was also more into PC gaming in the past (WoW, Quake, FFXI, CS, etc), but moved on to console gaming when video card upgrades where pretty much required every year. I'm still not nearly as good at FPSs with a controller as I was with a mouse & keyboard.

You've more than welcome to come to the next gaming night (have been switching between Gears of War & Halo 3 lately). Even if you haven't purchased a 360 yet, there are plenty of seats open.

LOL! Maybe! It just so happened that I met some really cool people, so yeah, probably. At the very least, you know that we all have gaming in common... and drinking!

GH3's coming out pretty soon too. That one's going to feature online play, so who knows! I never played any of the GH games, but I have a feeling that I would own at the Trogdor song!

The only thing I didn't like about the Xbox 360 was the noise. After 15 minutes of Forza, I could hear the console over the game, and I was about 15 feet away from the console.

Both of ours are pretty darned quite. I've got accessory fans running with them, so that might minimize the 360 fan activation I guess. Plus they are coth in entertainment centers (doors open when playing of course).

The newer ones don't quite have the noise problems. FYI, the majority of the noise comes from the DVD drive and not from the fans. The first 360 that I got (which ended up red ringing) did have some noise problems. I checked into it, and it was using one of the louder DVD drives.

I recently did a little swapping and have one of the Premium 360s that has HDMI (not to be confused with the Elite 360). It's drive is substantially more quiet. I think that they've moved to BenQ DVD drives. Also, they beefed up the cooling, so there shouldn't be any red ring problems.

It was mostly the DVD drive and I determined that it already had the quieter drive in it (this was before the HDMI ports showed up). Maybe I'll try a newer one sometime.

Now I gotta ask questions since Im a computer guy and havent messed with consoles a whole lot. When shopping for hte 360 which type should I get? Is there a difference between them all besides the hardrive size besides types and brands of DVD drives? You mentioned HDMI output. Do only some have them? THX

EDIT: Im answering some of my own questions by reading some news clips and forums. Apparantly some of the Halo 3 360's have the new Falcon chip in them and the premiums are starting to show up with a HDMI ports on them. Im assuming hte Elites also. Not the cores yet tho. Looks like I'll have to go either premium or elite.

The Core model is being phased and replaced with an Xbox 360 Arcade model. This one will include a wireless controller, 256mb Memory Card, HDMI, updated cooling hardware, and a disc featuring some select Xbox Live Arcade games. I think that the price will be the same as the Core, $279.

The Premium model (now just called Xbox 360) currently has the non-Falcon CPU but it does have HDMI, 20gb hdd, a wireless controller, headset, and updated cooling hardware. Basically the same as when it first came out, with the inclusion of HDMI & cooling.

The Elite is the same as the Premium except that it is black and has a 120gb hdd. Ratboy just upgraded to an Elite when his 1st run 360 red ringed. It's pretty slick looking, and hopefully MS will start adding some features that will take advantage of that 120gb hdd.

You're right about the Halo 3 versions having the Falcon CPU. This will supposedly help the 360 run cooler and thereby eliminating the possibility of getting the red ring, but I think that updated cooling hardware resolved that as well. Other than the CPU, you get the special color scheme, HDMI, and a 20bg hdd.

I'd say just get the Xbox 360 (Premium) model. You're really going to want that hdd for demos and Live Arcade games. Although, it's only $50 more for the Halo 3 model, so if you want to get that Falcon chip, go for that one. With the Elite, you're spending and extra $100 for a color and 100gb more hdd space.

Love Xbox live for the arcade games. Love playing Worms, and Bomberman against strangers and friends. Haven't tried anything like Halo on it yet, mostly play the FPS games on the computer because I can use the keyboard and mouse..
Noise was a bit of a problem when I had the Xbox in a enclosed area and it was getting hot. Moved it to a more open area where heat could dissipate and it's very quiet now. I have one of the older Premium models.
