Alert | | someone else was using my computer and "allowed" a bunch of viruses in through zone alarm. my computer is so messed up right now, i can't even get into any rpograms, whether internet related or not. couldn't even open solitaire if i wanted to!!! there is nothing irreplaceable on my hard drive, so i wouldn't be too depressed if it had to be wiped out and just start all over from scratch. my problem is twofold: i bought the computer used and therefore have no program disks to reload the software, and i really don't know enough about computers to do this myself. any techies out there willing to take pity on me and help me out? not having a computer really sucks, especially these days when i am just to big and lazy to want to leave the house. if anyone can assist, i will PM my phone number later today when i can get back on a computer. thanks in advance.

Alert | I hope you can fix it!
I know nothing about them either..
Hey Jason.... Help a Prego woman out!!!
| | Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem. ______________________________________ *************************************** San Diego Super Chargers! GO!!! Joined old forum March 2006 Post count: 3068 + these | |

Alert | know how to boot up into safe mode? start by booting up into safe mode, with networking support, and download, install, and run ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php) let that find and remove all the spyware crap...
that will most likely fix most of your problems. a good free virus scanner (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/28415/lng/us/tpl/v5) is AVG...there are also some decent online ones... (http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/)
start there..see if you still have huge issues. | | "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Then on the way out, slam the door."

that doesnt sound like a pebcak (normally isnt it pebkac?) it sounds more like spyware hogging up resources. | | "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Alert | Rabbit you seem to know computers. What exactly is SpyShredder and how did it get on to the computer and how in the heck do you take it off? It does not show up under our add/remove programs.
Thanks.

Alert | What exactly is SpyShredder spy shredder is malware/spyware. its crap. it ended up on your system, at a guess, from downloading a free game or some such. its definitely not anything you want on your PC.
to get rid of it, i would suggest the same links to you that i suggested to demonica. ad-aware from lava soft, and avg. both should catch it.
id start with ad-aware tho, ive had a fair amount of success with it. also, boot up in safe mode after you download and install it...and run it there at least once. | | "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Alert | ad-aware is a great program...its free, reliable, and updated often. id suggest it on your daughters computer for sure. might even want to set it up to run at startup...depending on how old your daughter is, and what shes up to.
there are all sorts of little things you can do to increase performance...delete temp files, little things like that can add up and make a difference.

Alert | How do I start up in Safe Mode? She is 13 and lives on the Myspace and AIM. We have a program that is undetectable on the computer but sends us every single thing she does, emails, IM's...a little "Big Brother" but just making sure..

Alert | start up in safe mode by restarting, and hitting f8 when the windows screen first appears. its kinda tricky sometimes, you have to hit the key at the right time. half the time, i just start hitting f8 right after the POST gets done. Thats the very first screen that comes up and shows how much memory you have...etc.
myspace and aim...you can get some fairly nasty spyware from either place, tho i suspect shes mostly talking to people she knows in real life, which is usually safer.
i think its cool that you have a keylogger on her pc...too many parents let there kids go unsupervised on the internet, and there is far too much stuff out there that is way too inappropriate for kids...not to mention all the chesters out there. | | "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Alert | Good advice from the above posters. Ad-aware is a great program to use. Make sure you regularly update the virus and spyware defiinitions (its easy, just one button to click) and it'll keep you protected. You may also want to use it in conjunction with Spybot Search and Destroy (another very good free spyware and virus protection program). If worse comes to worse and you cant zap those suckers out with those two... you may want to consider just formatting your hard drive and re-installing your operating system.
If you dont have the operating system Disks, (depending on how infected your computer is) you may be able to create a back up disks for your system.. It's not too difficult, in most cases.
Formatting may take about an hour or so, but sometimes that's a lot quicker than spending hours trying to hunt down and get rid of viruses, especially if they're particularly nasty and you dont have any irreplacable files.
Also, Do you own a Dell computer? Because if you do, its relatively simple in terms of getting the software for your components. You can go to the Dell support page online to get any additional drivers you need to have your system operate efficiently, once windows is reloaded.
In the future, if you are using Windows as your OS, make sure you check the Windows Update website about once a week. They're always rolling out more security patches and updates, so be sure to check it often, it'll help take care of some of the issues and make you less susceptible to future problems.
