Alert | So in my control panel when I go to "programs and features" to remove a program the list populates just fine but the uninstall or change/remove buttons arent there.
I did extensive searching on line and tried the registry fix, but to no avail. microsoft tech support has been less than helpful. Suggestions? Jason?

Alert | | Every program. If it was just a few the registry fix should have worked. That would have indicated that the string was not included or corrupt within the uninstall registry

Alert | Open up Registry Editor and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Underneath there should be a whole bunch of subkeys. Open up two or three random ones and look for the contents of the UninstallString value. What I'm getting at is: have all of the UninstallStrings been erased from the registry? If so, you won't see an Uninstall button. Here's what I'm looking for:

If they're all missing an UninstallString value, then that's the problem. Some program wiped out the data. If they all have it, then it's a Vista problem and we can go from there. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | OK, that's what I wanted to be sure of. Since it sounds like a Vista problem, is it possible to use System Restore to go back a month or so? Short of that, the only thing I can think of would be to run setup again to upgrade your installation. That will refresh all of the registry settings related to this, without wiping out your data. Since I've never heard of this problem before, I don't have any more targeted, specific fixes. You'll probably want to wait for MS to respond before doing something so invasive. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | We just bought Kimberly a new computer for her office and the transition to Vista went fairly smooth, however I ran into a hassle with Quicken.
Quicken pre-2007 versions require that you run the install as administrator via a right click and then things run well. However, I tried installing it and had to do a system restore because of failures. Even after a system restore, the registry was whacked and it still showed Quicken installed and when I tried to Uninstall it wouldn't do it. It wouldn't do a maintenance install or repair either. My research led me to this fun utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
It worked like a champ. It may help your uninstall issues as well, Tony.
Good Luck. | | | |

Alert | | I'm curious as to why a clean install won't let you install updates or remove programs. You're saying that on a freshly formatted drive, a brand-new install of Vista will not download updates through Control Panel->Windows Update? | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Wow that's screwed up.. Doesn't make any sense why it would be broken after a clean install.
I'd recommend a clean install of XP. If you're doing business on your computer I'd stick with XP for now.

Alert | The first thing I'd do if you get a new disc is rip an ISO of it. I've got one and I have no worries about scratching or damaging my disc.
If you happen to have anyone you know with an Anytime Upgrade disc (basically anyone that got a new computer recently) you can use that to rip an ISO. That's all it is. Just a full Vista disc with a different silk screen. It doesn't matter which edition you have of Vista, they're all on the same disc and your product key tells setup which one to install.
I would really hate to have to support a group of XP systems now that Microsoft has shutdown Autopatcher. The only way to get updates now is from Windows Update. | | Joined: Jul 2005
