Alert | | What do you think is the best brand of computer to get. I have three dell computers in my house. All of them always seems to have something wrong with them. Then when we try to call and get them fixed, since we paid for the extended warranty we always get people who are hard to understand and it seems like they don't even speak english.

Alert | Depends on the type. Dell desktops seem to be pretty reliable, but their notebooks aren't nearly as good. Lenovo laptops are very sturdy. HP laptops, about on par with Dell. Acer is junk. Gateway is somewhere between the two. Toshiba is about on par with HP. Apple's laptops look great, but are flimsy (before any Apple fanboys flame me, I had a Macbook and that thing was in and out for case and display problems).
I have a Dell XPS desktop and except for a noisy case (there is a rattle I have to get fixed) it is excellent. My Lenovo T61 is also top notch.

Alert | | Thanks Jason. I am actually liking Toshiba right now. I having a desktop computer but sitting on the couch with a laptop everyonce in awhile would be great. Is if fairly easy to get a docking station for laptops?

Alert | | I have a Lenovo laptop at work - that thing's great! The one I have is very well loaded with tons of memory, dual processors, etc. . . . so it was far from the lower-end of the price range (not a clue how much it costs though). It can handle pretty much anything I throw at it work-wise and I throw a TON at it. It is MUCH faster and more powerful when connected to the docking station at my desk than it is through our companies wireless connection, but still works well on the wireless connection to the network.

Alert | | I have used an HP at work for the past two years (not by choice) and they've actually been pretty good. We just bought an HP from Costco that is a 17in. with pretty decent specs for 999. If you have a costco membership it might be worth purchasing there to try some laptops to see if you like them. They have a 90 day return policy with no restocking fee. They also extend the manufacturers warranty by an additional year. Anyway, might be an idea. They have HPs, Dells, Sonys, and some others I think. Good luck!

Alert | I've got a Toshiba laptop. It's a solid computer except that I'm on my third power cord. At $75 per replacement, it's getting old replacing them. I assumed I was abusing the power cord until I read reviews that others were complaining about them being cheaply engineered. My Toshiba Satellite is great so I've accepted the $75 yearly cord replacement fee.
I liked my old Sony Vaio desktop better than my new one. If I get another desktop, I'd probably look at Compaq or HP. I've never been a Dell fan. Just my opinion.

Alert | | Be thankful it didn't go the way of one Toshiba I had. At the end of the power cord, where it plugs into the computer, there is a colored ring. In my case that ring melted off and got stuck in the connector on the laptop. Made it impossible to use any power cord reliably. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Don't get a compaq. Since the swallowing by HP for some reason the Compaq DESKTOP has gone the way of the WTH? but the compaq presario laptop is stil a quality machine. Other then being loaded down with junk HP software.
Dell laptops are feasibly reliable, while their desktops have some shoddy motherboard issues. For example, my USB are like a cat. They decide when they want to work. I have 8 of them and NONE of them work consistently. Three months to the day after I bought the machine my DVD burner went out and just decided it didnt want to work, and they didnt want to send me a replacement. The Banglor india call centers are inexpensive and fantastic because of their hours but sheesh. If I wanted to know how to speak Hindi I would take a class.
here are my choices. Desktop, Dell XPS series (despite shoddy external, their interior is actually pretty well put together), or HP. (have them remove the software crap before sending it to you which you can do if you order online) Laptop: Toshiba or IBM(lenovo). The thinkpad is a fantastic machine and much prefered. Also, Acer CAN make a good machine. But be careful. Good luck in your search.
Personally, my next purchase will probably be a Dell laptop.

Alert | We've got a Dell XPS desktop and love it! We've had it about six months now and not one single problem. We upgraded the hell out of it though, so it's far from their base XPS (I think it was about $2200'ish).
We also have a Dell Inspiron laptop whick is fine. It was fairly base level, I think I upgraded the memory and the processor. I've had it about two years now and the only issue I have is the battery needs to be replaced (it started telling me to replace it six months ago). | | Just the good ol' boys, Never meanin' no harm, Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.

Alert | | But back on topic, I have a Dell Lap Top (work), and A Dell Desktop that I am very happy with. Have had the desktop for about 1 year with no issues. I also have a ThinkPad(work) that is rock solid. It's IBM, but I don't think Lenovo has changed much.

Alert | Personally, I'd look into getting one of those new iMacs. I've never owned a Mac, but have always wanted to see what all the hubbub is about.
If you've already got a desktop, those Macbooks look good too. When I purchased my laptop, I went for the big, powerful desktop replacement, but didn't realize how much I would hate the weight, heat, and short battery life (around 2 hours).

Alert | LOL, Alan. No suffering here. As a matter of fact, so it's out in the open since someone thought my business was everyone's, my house is on the market for $229K, I owe $330K on it, it's a short sale which is the last stop before forclosure.
When I bought the house I was making about $160K/year, after I failed to play office politics I was pused out the door. Actually, I was demoted twice for BS, at which point I decided to quit. At that point I started working for AUL. Of course the money was not the same, and yes, I got behind on my house, surrendered one of my cars and almost lost the other one.
I'm sure no one on here has ever had anyting like this happen before, so I commend all of you for being better than I.
However, my personal experiences have taught me a couple of things:
1) What I have today can be gone in an instant.
2) I live every day like it's my last, and you know what, I'd do it all over again regardless of the outcome.
3) I don't care what anyone on here thinks of me.
Now, from the business side, what do my personal issues have to do with the way I run a business or with the pricing I may offer? Fact is I can offer better pricing and get the same quality. Why you ask? Well, because I don't have several company trucks, I don't have employees (most work will be contracted out) and I don't have an office space. My overhead involves cell phone, land line, insurance and some other small stuff.
As we start to complete jobs in Maricopa and surrounding areas you will start to hear more about how our customer service is superior to any other company out here. How warranty replacements are done within a few days, not weeks. How jobs are started and completed as promised and how the quality of the work is as good as, if not better than, any other company around. | | Just the good ol' boys, Never meanin' no harm, Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.

Alert | Just an FYI, B everything you say your new company can offer is kind of amusing, because, well YOU over quoted. I mean if you quoted someone 3 grand more than they should have been quoted on an installation, like you did for me, then yeah of course you can underbid them.
