Alert | I tested my new connection with one of those online speed testers and it was 1.4 download and 956 upload. I bought the "up to" 9 megs package.
I know it won't be 9 megs but shouldn't it be a lot higher than that?

Alert | How are you connected? Wireless or hard wired? There are alot of factors that could be affecting your speed. Have you contacted them yet?
I too was having speed issues, turned out to be a splitter I had installed . Their technician came out and BOOM I was back up and running. Give them a call, their service is actually pretty good, unlike other providers in the city. :I

Alert | This is a touchy subject for me. Movinonup, this test is accurate, this is about the average with MBB, in certain areas. I live in the Meadows. If you are anywhere near that location, or likely on the same side of the street, then you probably have as poor of a connection as I do. I can barely game and my wife and I cannot browse at the same time.
MBB has been somewhat working on the issue for over 2 months now. From what I know, there are new technicians in the office now and they are doing great. I hope to have one of them out to my home soon. A friend of mine on this forum now works there as well, so I think something will be done to rectify this soon. I know some folks on MBB are seeing what they are paying for, but I have not for over a year. It seems to be related to location. | | Shannon Amos National Property Inspections (NPI) Office: 520-208-2590 / Cell: 480-459-0655

Alert | When i first moved in to Alterra my speeds from MBB were what they avertised or better. This was back in September. I work from home through a VPN and during the day the speeds seem to be better.
I had not run a speed test for some time until I read this thread and boy was I shocked. Barely pulling 1mb down and 1mb up. I to maybe calling MBB to investigate. I am paying for something that is not being delivered.

Alert | Just an FYI. The use of a VPN will steal a lot of bandwidth. Also, your connectivity is determined by how you are connected. Are you using wired or wireless connection?
Mr. Inspector. When you say you and your wife can't be on at the same time that is WAY unusual. Are you using cordless phones in your home? Or perhaps you have ICS setup on your computers? There are alot of situations that could affect them.

I am wired in through a Linksys WRT54G router(wireless turned off). I only use the VPN when I am working. I usually surf the net and download crap while working on my home pc during the day. I also have Vonage and understand that it too can help bring down bandwidth but as I stated before, when I moved in back in September the speeds were almost always around 7mb to 9mb when MBB started offering better than 1.5mb.

Alert | | Vonage can bring down the bandwidth ALOT. The "router" they provide you with acts as a network interface for every other vonage user. Its like building its on telephone network with all the rrouters in the world.

Alert | | I had the 9 meg service too but I found out that my netgear wireless router bottlenecks it down to 1.5 so I changed my service to 1.5. No sense in paying for something I can't use.

Alert | I am hard wired. I have someone coming to the house on Monday to investigate. Tony is the customer service person and is the most personable and understanding person I've met in the IT industry. I feel they are going to work hard to fix it. I get 3MB down every once in a while but it seems to be sticking to 1.5-ish at this point. I have a webstar modem so I'm probably going to buy a Motorola surfboard to eliminate that troubleshooting step.
Shannon, I live in Tortosa (HomeLife) so I'm not sure where you are compared to me but I hope they fix it. Other than that, their cable TV system is really good and cheap!
I'll update everyone on Monday...

Alert | Well, the tech was back out yesterday. My wife was the one dealing with him and said he was nice. Tony from MBB called me to say the tech was getting 8 MB/s after taking my wireless router out of the picture. That makes sense right?
so, I got home and ran the very same test they did and found the max I could get was 2.5 MB/s <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/sad.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Sad' align='absmiddle'>
I'll be calling them back.

Alert | The only thing consistent with MBB is the upload speed. I can get 1mb up all the time. This morning I was pulling 6mb down and now only about 2.5mb. GRRR.. I am going to take the routers(Vonage and Wireless) out and plug directly into the modem to see what happens.

Alert | | If it is slow in the evening hours then it sounds like typical cable. Since cable is a shared connection, everyone hops on and the cable company's insufficiently built network shows. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | They were out at my house today, the new technician. He saw the fluctuations I was talking about, and this was early afternoon, so it is not caused by traffic. After further evaluation, he also determined that the problem is not inside my home.
They intend to try some things over the next few days to see if they can improve the speeds. My upload speeds are also consistantly at around 1 meg, my D/L speeds go from 2 meg to 8 meg, all over the chart, pretty much all day long.
It is taking a long time, but I think they will get it resolved. | | Shannon Amos National Property Inspections (NPI) Office: 520-208-2590 / Cell: 480-459-0655

Alert | I am plugged directly into my modem (Toshiba PCX2200) and the speeds are not any better than with me running through my WRT54G router. Even with the Vonage router unplugged the speeds are not any better.

Alert | 1. This is why I got rid of MBB and switched to quest. The only speed test that was even remotely right was the one on their website. All the others said I had dial up or really slow DSL.
2. A cable network is shared bandwidth. The more people you have in your neighborhood and online at the same time, the less bandwidth available for you to use.
3. I used to frequently get in the debate of Mbps versus MBps with friends. Megabit per second (usually what your ISP quotes) is not the same as MegaBytes per second. Windows when it downloads usually shows MegaBytes speed. A byte is 8 bits, so therefore I typically take whatever my ISP has told me i am getting, divide it by 8. Run the test against that number and its usually pretty close (it wasn't with MBB, but has been with Qwest, and was with Cox when I lived in Chandler).
4. Keep in mind the way this works. Speeds are negotiated at the slowest connection speed. If the site has a T1 (1.544 Mbps), it will only negotiate at the rate it has available.

Alert | | FYI something has been a bit fishy with MBB. I hope you folks are correct in them adjusting their pipeline. I used to see literally 950-1000/k download, yes in internet explorer it switched from KB to MB/sec. That was awesome. Now it's shotty. 300-500k/sec. If i'm lucky

JUST took this speedtest. My router is exactly 54 feet away from my computer and is a 2Wire 270hg. Boosted to wireless power of 10. with a wireless channel of 10.
This IS a wireless network connection.
