...bought a laptop! I'm so excited I can't wait! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/biggrin.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Big Grin' align='absmiddle'>

Against my better judgement we did go with Dell again. However, this time I just paid for the darn thing. No way I'm dealing with Dell Financial again! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/mad.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Mad' align='absmiddle'>

Anyway, says it should be here by Aug 22nd. I sure hope it comes early!!! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/hehe.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='HeHe' align='absmiddle'>

My desktop is a dell and it sucks.

Had my DVD RW go out on me before I burned a DVD and my RAM went bad at 92 days JUST outside of the warranty period.

Ummm....no. All laptops from Dell are custom built to each order's specification.

Actually, soon after I posted that I contacted my future brother n law who works for dell. Dells laptops are built overseas, with basic parts like drives, HD's and memory upgrades easily accesible for changes. They have warehouses full of complete laptops, with minimal customization. he also said they do have a line or two of laptops that ARE FULLY customizable, which could be the model purchased.

We are a dell family

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

Still, Dell explicitly does not keep a stack of pre-built laptops on hand. They built their business on just-in-time production to save costs. Once you place your order and Dell confirms payment, the order is sent to production where they pull all the parts needed to build the computer and place them into a bin (this is called kitting) and then send them down the production line. Every last part is put into this kit, from the shell of the case to the LCD, keyboard, etc. so that it can be built. Pre-built systems are not available unless you're looking at refurbs. If Java ordered one of the new Inspirons or the new XPS laptops, a one month wait is right on the money, since production is just starting and demand is high.

All of their computers are fully customizable, within Dell's available specifications. All of their new computers are built to order. They do not keep any stock on hand of pre-built shells.

Java, one month is completely normal.

I've got a Dell desktop and laptop. They are awesome. Haven't had any problem that was not from operator error. Would buy again for sure!!

jASON,

to be completely honest with you I am pretty sick of you thinking you know everything.

My future brother n law WORLS AT dell and personally KNOWS of this fact. The XPS line is the most highly customizable.

BUT they do maintain a warehouse of prebuilt laptops.

ROFL! You can't come up with a good counter-argument so you attack me? Just because you know someone doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. Dell does have prebuilt laptops: refurbished units. Brand-new units like the one Java built are done built-to-order. Not prebuilt at all. If you don't believe me, just do some research. There are entire papers written on Dell's model.

If you still don't believe me, here is an article proving my claim. And if that wasn't enough, Dell themselves says that they are build-to-order.

To be honest, I'm getting sick of correcting all of the unresearched claims you keep making. If I come across as knowing everything it is because I usually only comment when I know what I'm talking about.

LOL! You didn't even read both links. And I'm the arrogant idiot...

This is hilarious. You know, Tony, it just might help if you actually injected some facts into your profane rants.

Sorry Java, I won't continue hijacking your thread. Enjoy your Dell, don't hesitate to post or PM me with any questions.

actually I DID read both links. I was just amused with the first link being to a almost four year old article.

and if this forum worked correctly you would have seen the motherless goat comment was followed by a wink. Meaning that most of the time I am simply messing with you.

But I must say I do feel you think of yourself very highly and feel the need to interject your own little bit of "know-it-allisms" into every thread on here. Usually following one of my posts. So sounds like I have a stalker!
