I bought an external hard drive and it crawls. It prompts me fore a high speed USB. How much are they and how difficult is it to install? My computer is less than a year old.

I heard you were fast, Sass. You should have one. Have you got your drive hooked directly up to the USB port, not through a hub? Is the cable one that came with the drive?

Stupid should hurt!

Make sure there are no USB 1.0 devices attached to the same port/hub that your USB 2.0 HD is connected to. A USB port runs at the slowest speed compatible with ALL the devices connected to it.

You want to make sure that you have the highspeed USB drivers installed. Go to the manufacture of the USB device and they should have drivers, install one of the USB controllers with the high speed driver and you should be fine

Sass, to verify that your USB ports are set up correctly try this:

Click Start and then Run
Type in (without quotes) "compmgmt.msc" and click OK.
In the left pane of Computer Management, click on Device Manager.
In the right pane, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Look for an entry that contains "Enhanced Host Controller" and report back it's full name. For example, my laptop says "Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD".

If you find an entry for that, let us know which USB ports you are plugging the device into. Are you trying both front and back directly on the computer? Through a hub? Have you tried a different cable?

Or control panel | Administrative tools | Computer management | Device Manager if you do not have a run command on the start menu!

It really wouldn't matter what USB port he is plugging into, if he does have the high speed driver installed then it won't work. Its not port dependant.

I actually have run across computers that wouldn't do USB 2.0 on the front ports.
