I thought I'd start a new thread instead of dragging out Arena's on this topic. I think it would be a good idea, to help keep the restaurants we have going, for all of them to unite and stop giving free refills. It's something we've gotten used to over the years when places started doing it to be competitive. Yes, fountain drinks have a very good margin of profit, hence one way our restaurants can compensate for the exorbitant rents they pay. People are trying to keep their prices as reasonable as the market will bear, but they can't give their food away and stay afloat... jump in

I love free refills. Just don't ask for more if you want to save them some cash.

I would like to know just how much money you think a business would save in a typical day with out refilling drinks.

It’s not like are giving free beer refills....

I am sure the cost to wash my ice tea glass is more then if I have 5 refills while I am there....

I would like to suggest sound business plans and strong money management to help keep Maricopa business afloat.

Rescuemom, I sooo appreciate the sentiment. We will continue to give free refills on our 32 oz. Sodas. The reason we don't give them during a game is a matter of time management. Believe or not, every once in a while, you will have those people that come in and order and sit at a table for three hours. This is considered, in the business world, a bad business plan. It's not a matter of wanting to make anyone unhappy. It is simply a time management practice. We do appreciate the business and as I said, will continue to give free refills.

Refills used to cost money, until Chuck Norris scared them into being free.

Free refills are the cost of customer service. If I can't continue to have something to drink thorughout my entire meal, many people will be far more likely to go to a different restaurant the next time. It's not cool to have to finish your meal with only water or to pay extra. Fountain drinks (soda, tea, lemonaid, etc...) are cheep. The ice costs more than the drink mix as does the cost to wash the glass. So, in reality, if a restaurant charges you for refills, it would actually cost them more because they have to wash multiple glasses for each person who gets a refill along with annoying their customers. It's bad business.

Now, the comment about no free refills during a game at a sports bar because it encourages people to stick around for hours without spending any more money - that does make sense (although I would still say that there should be at least 1 refill if the person getting the refill also ordered food).

I have to admit, I was done with Arena long before it was "refill" time. I think the service and quality of the food should possibly be the focus for success. If these areas are great it would be harder to fault them for charging for a refill.
I personally have a larger problem now that I know they have an employee who IN MY OPINION flaunted pictures of their skinhead husband/boyfriends racist body art. A businesses employees are a reflection of their business.

Flame On!

You hold a restaurant accountable for a tattoo that the spouse of an employee has (we're not talking about the owners or a business where the employees are held to higher expectations than the majority of people, such as government employees or school employees)? Now, if there was an employee that had an offensive tattoo that was VISIBLE while they are at work, then maybe that would be a reflection on the restaraunt, but you are taking accountability WAY too far. A server in a restaraunt is not a job that comes along with accountablilty outside of work. And the spouse of a server is certainly in no way affilitated with the character of a restaurant. Even if a server has a tattoo that you would find offensive - it's none of your business unless you can see it while they are at work in that restaraunt - If that tattoo is covered by clothing, make-up, a bandage, anything, while they are at work, it's not something that can be reasonably held against the restaraunt.

Hold the restaraunt to appropriate standards - you know . . . customer service, food quality, appropriate pricing for the type of restaurant, etc. . . . Even employee appearance ON THE JOB, but off the job, they can appear any way they want.

Besides, the employee you are referring to wasn't flaunting any tattoo pictures of anyone - she was sharing pregnancy pictures that happened to show some tattoos. And by the way, I've never met her, I don't know her, I don't have anything to do with Arena except that I've eaten there once, but I do know what I expect as far as customer service when I go out to dinner - I have reasonably high expectations, but I don't give a flip about the servers spouse since that person would have nothing to do with the food quality or customer service!

I am too use to Free Refills...

I just paid $75 bucks for 3 people to eat, then tipped 25% ... I want something in return... It's only a dang Soda!!

FREE REFILLS FOR ALL!!!!!!
(but not during a game. I understand about the space thing and the fact that a person can chug a lot of soda in 3 hours time.)

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

perhaps a miniumum food or bar purchase would be more appropriate than charging for soda refills druing a game? someone there just for the game shouldn't be offended that they need to at least order lunch to keep their seat.

if i went there during a game (and i'd be oblivious to that since i don't watch sports on tv) and was charged for refills, i'd be pretty upset. ETA: like if i went there for lunch/dinner with a friend after work

Our restaurants are already past the point of no return if anyone thinks that switching to no refills will make them profitable. LOL! I imagine that would actually drive them out of business. Consumers demand value for their money and there is no value in paying as much for one 12-20 oz glass as there is in a whole 12-pack.

I am sorry I am hung up on a sports bar-who shows a the game (which can last 3 hours) is "upset" when people stay to watch the entire game...and doesnt give the casual diner who isnt there for the game a refill...did I miss something?? If your a Sports Bar and the games are on, arent the people you are marketing to going to stay for the game??

Ok I am not into sports but if I were then I would want to stay at one place for the whole thing...it would be like going to the movies and not staying until the end?? No?

I will not give out my money to a place that has to be so cheap. If I can't get a free refill for FREE, it's not free is it.

Thanks
