Alert | I think you're doing great, too! We have 5 in our family, including three boys. I usually spend ~$200/week at the store during the summers when they're not having breakfast/lunch at school- and that also includes all my cleaning supplies, shampoo, etc. My husband needs a high fiber diet and we buy a lot of organics, etc. so that also drives up cost because we try to use fresh produce over canned/frozen.
I'd be curious to see the typical weekly menu for families on different budgets.... might be nice to get some good ideas for cutting costs? | | As Bertrand Russell once said, "The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation." I think we can all appreciate the relevance of that now.

Alert | Posted By YZRacer on 08/24/2007 6:44 PM I spend an average of $350 a month. family of 4 (and one on the way), one in diapers, also the bachleor neighbor "borrows food/milk" frequently. I do use a popular coupon program, and watch sales. I refuse to go to walmart. I rarely use costco, unless what i can get there is a better deal than what I can get with coupons at the 'regular' store.
With the news papers (I get 3 sunday papers delivered), it costs me less than $5 a week. Diapers usually have coupons and are included in sales and the reports. I have never used formula, so I don't know if they are included ('cause I'm not looking). you should check it out it's called couponsense (dot com). I am sure that that there is an instructor in 'copa. It's easy to use and follow. I"ve been doing it for about 3 years now. | | If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

Alert | | What I dont understand is if you get the papers and shop the ads what is that company doing for you? or are they shopping the ads for you? | | I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Alert | each week, they create reports for you. Say, you are looking for Pampers. You put "pampers" into the computer program, and it will show you all the places that have pampers on sale and what the price for them would be with the available coupons. Frys, CVS and Bashas may have them on sale the same week, but their program will tell you where they are cheaper. They do the leg work for you. You should get in touch with an instructor to explain it better than I can (I'm one of those, I can do it better than I can explain it people). They also offer a free week to try it out.

Alert | | We love Costco as well! They usually have great deals on meats and fruits, so we stock up and save a ton. | | Just the good ol' boys, Never meanin' no harm, Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born.

Alert | | We have 2 adults and a 2 yr old. We spend about $300-$350 a month. We buy most meats at Sam's Club, divide it into meal portions and freeze. Also buy diapers there unless I find a sale and have a coupon that makes it less. Everything else I buy in town at Frys, occasionally Basha's if there is a deal I can't pass up. I get one Sunday paper and use coupons. Sometimes I print coupons off internet. Hubby usually takes leftovers for lunch, I eat Lean Cuisines. I went tonight to buy groceries for the week/restock items used in the past week. It was about $135 and then I gave my Frys card and coupons and only paid $67. I rarely buy generic stuff so could definitely cut more corners there if needed. I think I will check into the couponsense thing...sounds like I could be saving more but don't know if I would like having to make so many stops to get all that I need. WalMart matches prices so if/when one comes to town, that would be really great!

Alert | My kids go through a gallon of orange juice every two days. Over a month, that's $75 alone. Milk is about $10 per week for three gallons. A loaf of bread every two days equals $45 ($3 times 15). I save tons of money on cleaning and personal hygiene products with coupons, but the fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat aren't cheap and usually don't have many discounts. It costs a lot for us to eat healthy.

If you haven't tried it yet, you might try doing some of your shopping at Trader Joe's. They have a lot better prices on a lot of the higher quality ingredients! | | As Bertrand Russell once said, "The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation." Can we come over for dinner?
Depending on the night - it's anywhere from just DH and I to either or both of our adult children coming over for dinner. We spend about$400-500 per month. I shop the ads and stock a chest freezer with the specials. Bnls Chicken Breast at $1.67 per pound? I'll buy 20-30 pounds and portion it. Steaks - we eat lots of ribeyes. When they are on sale, I'll go to the store 2 to 4 times and buy the max each time. We eat lots of fresh produce and very little junk food. We're fat enough as it is

Alert | i've found that sometimes it's cheaper to get the brand name product with a coupon than the generic.
also, stocking up on something when it is on sale makes more sense then having to run to the store and paying full price when i run out. chicken comes to mind. a deep freeze and large pantry can be your friend! | | If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

Alert | Yeah a deep freezer is something I need to invest in soon. it kills me that chicken is $7/pack of 3... I love when it goes on sale for $3/pack... I stock up as much as I can but my freezer only holds so much. I think the things that kill me the most is fresh foods, I buy a lot of fresh veggies and fruits... costs a fortune... Meat does too. I try to bargen shop as much as I can, but still tend to spend a fortune. I need to get a membership to a bulk store or something. | | ~WARNING: I CANT SPELL!~
