Alert | so me and the familia took a trip up to Greer in the White Mountains of my beloved home state of Arizona, and on the way there we found quite possibly the best place to eat up there. so its not a fancy 4 or 5 star restaurant that they have up there, instead it was at a roadside hole in the wall kind of place. to those familiar with the area, going east on AZ 260 from hondah resort/casion, u run into the little town of McNary which is on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. a few hundred yards along the main route u will run into a bait shop/quikie mart joint and the place i am referring to is behind this store which is on the south side of the AZ 260.
best indian fry bread i have ever had, plus the best green chile to boot!! i promise everyone who goes up to that area of the state, or for those who are already familiar with the WM that u will enjoy the fry bread they serve. very very reasonably priced, an indian taco was $3.50 or so, plain with fijole con queso (beans&cheese) was $1.50. just an fyi, in hindsight i wish i had brought a bunch of extras home today when we came back to the 'copa <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/blush.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Blush' align='absmiddle'> | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Alert | | Italians have been making that for years and years. They are called Zeppole. Deep fried dough with powdered sugar. No big deal. The Indians copied it from them........ | | 25th Infantry Division <---- Tropic Lightning

Alert | | nice try, this fry bread is entirely different. i imagine lots of cultures do a very similar kind of fried bread, but indian fry bread is unique imo to the various tribes of the southwest. | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Last time I checked the Roman Empire was here on earth before the Indians. Just because they call Indian Fry Bread doesnt mean the Indians invented it. DB

Alert | | it all depends on what definition we are using for "here". if we are talking the land that is now arizona, then the indians were surely here before the italians. if wee are talking "here" as in on earth, i think a good arguement can still be made for native americans pre-dating italians.

Alert | lets get something clear first and foremost, the Roman Empire and Italy that we know today are vastly different. from 500AD - the present has brought many many changes. the DNA probably has been watered down by goths, germans, eastern europeans, vikings etc etc since Rome collapsed as an empire so no the roman empire doesnt predate the indians. the apache&navajo not to mention hopi and other desert tribes have been here for hundreds of yrs although rough estimates place the apache&navajo around 1000AD which is 500 yrs after Rome fell but still that tribes ancestors were somewhere on the continent before Romes height of power.
last but not least, the fry bread has been around for around 120 ish yrs, the tribes invented it out of necessity because the US government gave them meager rations of flour, lard etc when the navajo&some apache were moved to Bosque Redondo camp in NM so they made do with what they were given at the time and so they invented fry bread and the rest is history.
btw yes indian fry bread is indeed an indian invention, the way they eat it with mutton stew or beans/cheese/green chile etc are an invention of theirs that cannot be taken away from them. now did another culture deep fry bread before them? most assuredly they did, as european cultures had wheat flour many many thousands of yrs prior to the tribes of the NA continent so obvioulsy someone probably dropped some dough into a vat of oil but that doesnt make it Indian Fry bread, instead its just Fried Bread. @Magnetic Check, Mate&Match....
