 Alert | Some homeowners in Senita have put large stones on the outer two or three feet of their front landscape. It looks very nice and I am thinking that it might help me to prevent the losses that I have been experiencing with the smaller rocks.
Is anyone familiar with that design? Does it have a name? And where would I get those rocks? Does the HOA have to approve it? | |

Alert | It doesn't really have a name. The rocks you are looking for are called "Rip-Rap," which is basically rocks sized 5"-15." It's generally available in all the same colors that 1/2 granite is. The one on Arizona Avenue is "Saddleback Brown." (Which is silly, cause it's more of a purple color.
The technique is easy.
Rake back the granite rock, and distribute it through your yard. Dig out 4-6 inches of dirt in the area you want to install RipRap. Our neighbors used this dirt to back fill some low spots in my yard, and then add elevation changes to their yard. Then fill the lowered area with rip rap. They ised a shovel first, and then hand placed the rocks where the want them. Rake the 1/2" granite up to the edge of the rip-rap.
I used rip rap to creat a 12-18" border around my back yard. My neighbors used it as a border in their front yard. I think it's really attractive. Much more so that river rock.
As always, if you are altering the outward appearance of your house or yard, submitt an HOA architectual request. I don't see why it should be denied. And you know where to get pix of the work
