Alert | ok so let me start our by saying the southwestern united states has been under drought conditions since the late 90s according to government climatologists, and i believe all western states need water conservation measures to be put in place sooner rather than later.
ok with that said, my rant is directed to all inconsiderate people who put in winter lawns not only in arizona but throughout the west. do people who just have to have a green lawn through the winter, consider how much water they could save by not having a green lawn 12 months out of the yr? i would wager its quite a bit. to be blunt, i dont care if you move here from conneticut, or michigan, or illinois or virginia etc etc etc, you moved to a region of the country that is not the same as where u moved from and you need to respect the land, wildlife&fauna enough not to have to have a winter lawn which is just dumb because the winter time is a recooperating time for the land. while i realize farming goes on during the winter, lawns are purely cosmetic and are not a necessity during the winter.
i will be the first to admit, i have a front&back lawn, but i do not put in rye at all, EVER. its pretty evident the bermuda is much more healthy when it can rest&recooperate from the long summer rather than having it constantly in use when rye is overseeded during the fall. i believe the state needs to put a ban on rye grass in winter time to curb the wasting of water on overseeding. ok, rant is done, have a great night <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/rolleyes.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Rolled Eyes' align='absmiddle'> | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Alert | | Personally, I would like to see all grass be banned from lawns. We live in the dessert! Grass doesn't grow here naturally because the conditions don't allow for it. If you want grass, put in artificial. It looks better and it uses no water at all. I wholly agree with your comments about conserving water. Way too much is wasted on lawns in this state. The only thing that I question is that it seems it would make more sense to ban the summer grass than the winter grass. People in Az don't use their lawns in the summer time. It's too sinking hot to enjoy it. If you want to have a lawn to use, wouldn't it make more sense to have that lawn in the spring, fall, and winter, when the weather is nice enough to enjoy it? In addition, the summer grass uses far more water than the winter grass.

Alert | | yes you are correct. bermuda doesnt need that much water though, for instance i have shut water off to both lawns since 1st part of september and the bermuda in the back is still green!! i have been waiting for it to go dormant but it hasnt completely done that yet. xeriscape is definately the best way to conserve water. if you have cable or satellite tv, tune into a show on the national geographic channl called mega disasters: mega drought. it will blow your mind and make u wonder if vegas&phoenix might someday be uninhabitable due to drought | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Alert | First we have to get HOA's on board with all this--some REQUIRE you to overseed (not sure if any here in town do) and many have regulations against artificial grass in the front. I know of one HOA in Chandler that requires you to have at least 60% of your front yard in grass and that you overseed. I'd prefer to see HOA's with regs against grass, unless it's artificial, in the front.
Good artificial looks good, requires very little watering (just rinse it off now and then), doesn't get weeds and doesn't have bugs. | | The red head is BACK!! (and still mouthy)

Alert | We overseeded our front yard, but I have to say that I was out voted in the decison (my vote was no, hubby and realtor said yes). I HATE the water usage and the manure. I feel so guilty having the darn sprinklers going off 3 times a day. (I am trying to be extra water conscious in the rest of the house to make up for it) My in-laws HOA (in tempe) has a date that each lawn must be overseeded by, or fines will be assessed. They have to have a certain % of the yard be grass, blah blah. I would NEVER move into a neighborhood like that. Until the fake grass gains approval from more people (I personally don't like it) I doubt HOA's are gonna start allowing it in front yards. Um, we live in the desert. Desert landscaping should be mandatory, IMHO.

Alert | | WOW, what gives you the right to judge what we have in our yards. Yes, there is a concern about water and do our best to conserve. But mind your business if we want to have winter grass then we will.

Alert | what gives me the right? well i am a united states citizen and i can voice my opinion and even judge others just like you can. if you do your best to conserve, DONT PLANT RYE GRASS. talking about being 2 sided, conserving water in the southwest&planting rye grass is an oxymoron in principle. if you want rye grass so bad, move back east since they have a ton of it there. iyou move to a desert climate, and talk about conserving water yet you waste water by watering rye 3 times a day for at least a week to get it started, then once a week or so in the winter. yeah thats conserving water, please go back to bizzaro world and leave the sane, normal people like myself alone | | listened for, they cannot be heard;looked for, they cannot be seen; felt for, they cannot be touched: old ninja proverb

Alert | How funny this was brought up. There was a Dateline or 20/20 type show on last night (can't remember which) covering the droughts in Georgia as well as Tennessee. There is a small town in TN that has water trucked in via fire truck each day. The towns people are only allowed to use water for 3-4 hours in the afternoon/evening. And those 3-4 hours aren't recommended, the water to the town is literally shut off with the exception of those few hours. The mayor himself actually goes out each day and turns the water on and then turns it off a few hours later.
In Georgia it is also bad, they have banned all lawn watering among other things. They have "water conservation police" that drive around and check for people watering their lawns, flowers etc. If you get caught watering your water is shut off and a $1000 fine is imposed in order to turn it back on. They have water conservation hotlines where people call in an report their neighbors. It is crazy!

Alert | I was thinking more the lines of a 19 hole golf course.
You know I have winter grass. But to be honest with you, never thought about 'saving' water.
I just won't take a shower every other day. There. That make you feel better?

Alert | Okay, Okay. We won't wash our cars, and we'll go 'cowboy' and only shower twice a year. I'm not sure how to stop the evaporation from our 21,000 gallon pool though. We will stop using the toilets and dig a trench in the back. To prevent wasting water washing clothes, we'll wash our clothes in the gutters when our neighbors are washing their cars (to get the soap) and then rinse when they are watering their lawns. We'll have the dogs drink from the toilets (since we'll be using the trench out back). We'll only use paper plates , bowls and cups with plastic utensils (sorry rain forests and landfills). The only other way I can think to save water is to drink my urine, but then I'd have to brush my teeth more frequently
All this just because I feel guily about 1000+ sqft of yards I just winter seeded and am watering into submission.
Oh, and I don't scrape the bottom of my mower. I set the hose for FLOOD and wash the bottom of my mower untill all that nasty green stuff is gone. And don't forget about hosing down my patios and driveway.
