I was wondering if anyone has had any problems w/ there AC units??? I have been here for 1 year and mine has broken 3 times....last August, this May (costing me $400 to repair the entire Coil system) then again this month, the coil system again. If you could please let me know the builder, model, and problem w/ AC I would greatly appreciate it. Supposivley there is a "sort of" scam w/ one of the builders and the AC, and us buyers could be in for some paybacks. Thanks

Why isn't this a warranty repair? I am just curious, Our system is down right now. This is the first problem we have had. We have a Carrier unit installed by Chas Roberts.

We too had issues. Moved in in Jan 2006, and didn't use the unit until may/june. Right away we had noise problems, etc. We made Cas Roberts come out several times, but put in a work order through the builder. After many times, it is still loud but not like before.

We have one of those units that got a waiver on placement, and ordinarily the location of the unit would violate code. But, it got waived for DR Horton somehow on these builds.

Our unit hasn''t gone out yet, but as soon as I say it, well . . . . .

i heard that they are going to be phasing out all of these units that are on these newer houses within 6-8 months.. the model they use now is an r-22 i believe and they are going to be no longer making them due to gov't regulations. The newer models will use a different type of freon (or it might not be called freon at all) and should cost almost 5 times as much. I had an older unit that was out of warranty so i replaced it with a newer r-22 with a 10 year warranty. I couldnt see spending that much for one of the newer models that i am not required to have.

I have the model 38EZG060300 Carrier Puron High Efficiency. This model sucks! It couldn't be any noisier. The unit kicking on sounds like someone hits metal with a sledgehammer. Of course they made sure it was conveniently located right outside the master bedroom window. I had someone come out last year to braze a hole in the line going to the condenser. That all cost about $700. The new high effieciency freons are the worst. They run such a high head pressure on your units that they are bound to break. I will not repair my unit again. I have been shopping for a new Trane unit that I will replace it with when it goes down which I don't think will be too long. The compressor sounds terrible. Summation: DR Horton put the cheapest unit they could find on the new builds. And whats up with the plastic base foundation for the unit? I guess it would have cost too much to actually use real concrete.

I have a Carrier unit as well installed by Chas Roberts, about 1.5 years old and the unit failed a couple weeks ago. The probem was a leak in the coil unit outside, broken weld. Even though the unit was out of the builders warranty Chas Roberts fixed the problem at no cost. I was surprised that the coil had a problem so early it its life.

My situation sounds the same as raydahs. I have a Carrier unit that's about a year and a half old. The coils had a leak as well. The unit gave out last Sunday. Chas Roberts couldn't come out til Wednesday. I was leaving for Canada on Tuesday and needed it fixed before then. The coil was a warranty part however the labor was not. The HVAC said he has already replaced 10-12 of the same units for the same reason. He even said one guy replaced it with another coil (under warranty) and it did the same thing again a year later. So I chose to have the coils welded instead of getting another coil that will do it again. Needless to say it was not cheap and I have contacted Carrier units directly about the problem. Hopefully this doesn't happen to too many more people.

If ya'll ever need a fix on your A/C units, or help just figuring out what is wrong with it... Let me know - DH does that kind of work and can at least tell you straight up if it's what the companies tell you it is...

DR Horton KNEW about these air conditioners & their faulty coils when they installed them. They are fixing them for FREE because of this! Anyone who pays for repair should first contact DR Horton & then a lawyer!

I was actually charged a repair charge the second repair because it was over one year old, by Chas Roberts, and was different from the 1st repair. I have a DR Horton home, w/ a Carrier Puron AC. This is why I started this on the forum. I've heard about the discontinued units being bought by multiple builders out here, for cheap. I have an attorney and was trying to get feedback regarding this info. Basically, they bought the units knowing they were useless, contracted Chas Roberts to do repairs. How awesome for them, the get to charge for repairs after one year $$$$$, and wash their hands clean of these defective units after 5 years. Being from S.Florida, I know extreme heat, humidity AND hurricanes and funny enough, my Ac did fine through all of that!!! GO FIGURE.

For those of you that have had this coil problem, what were the symptoms? Our upstairs unit is just not blowing cold air, other wise it seems normal. Makes me think that we have had a freon leak?

When you have low or no freon in the system, the outside compressor will turn on for 5 to 10 seconds and then shut off. The inside blower will not come on. This routine will repeat every 10 minutes or so.

part of it is the excessive heat. and the other part is shoddy work by chas roberts. they are about quantity not quality.

Yes I have had many issues with the air conditioning installed by Chas Roberts, and I think a suit should be filed. Our's started leaking one and a half years after moving in. Chas Roberts, despite me having a small child and company staying at my house said they wouldn't be out to fix it for over a week, and that I should call someone else. We did, and spent close to $400 on freon, only to have it leak out and stop working again one week later. Finally I called my customer service agent at DR Horton and he helped resolve the issue. If your compressor is leaking, which is what it sounds like, it should have a two year warranty on it, and they have to replace it for free.

We are still $400 in the hole because we had to pay for the initial repair. Also, be careful and if someone else works on the AC don't tell Chas Roberts or they may reject the warranty.

I was outraged about the issue and had no idea how frequent this was happening. If there is anything I can do to help your cause please let me know! I was raised here in AZ and my parent's A/C lasted forever - something smells fishy. When my homebuilder remedied the issue so quickly I just blew it off, but maybe that's what they wanted.

you are right about chain saw Roberts. 15 or 16 years ago I worked for them for 2 days. When my boss toll me to cut the trus to get the drops down for the ac I looked at him and said you want me to do that he said yes and I said see ya! I went to a good company. P.S. they use chain saws to cut holes in wood. No power on job site.(chain saw Roberts)

We have had quite a week with our AC unit. It is a Goodman, so it is different than what most of you have posted here. We came home on Tuesday and the house was 86 degrees...called Chas Roberts and the customer service agent said "check the breaker" something about it being hot and us being gone all day...That happens every week day and we have never had this problem before, but whatever...The breaker was indeed tripped so we reset it and all was well...or so it seemed. When we got home last night, it was 94 degrees! Chas Roberts does not do emergency repair work and the earliest they could come out is next Wednesday. Uh, Hello? It has been over 100 degrees EVERY day! You think I am waiting a week for you to come fix it?!? That would be "no". I called a local guy and he was here within 30 minutes. A wire was shorted out. The compressor was putting out high ampage, but he said he has montiored other units for over a year with that same thing, and no major probelms. He fixed the wire, the a/c cooled the house down, all seemed well again...but tonight when we get home, it is once again 93 degrees! I called the local guy back out and he determined that the compressor needs to be replaced...he will be here in the morning to swap it out. And to think that I could still be waiting for Chas Roberts! BTW-when I called Chas Roberts, they did inform me that if I needed emergency service, I coud call Goodman (the manufactor) and find out who is an authorized warranty repair company. Of course they were closed already when I tried to call them...gee, that helps! Thanks a lot Chas Robert!

R-22 Systems will be around for another ten years or so. The production of R-22 will be phased out to be replaced with R 410A which is not harmful to the ozone layer.
New construction homes are still being fitted with r22 systems, though you see more of the R410A systems being installed by the builders.
