Fritzy, like I was saying....most RO supply water (cold kitchen sink) isn't softened when the loop is put in by the builder. So if mine has a salty taste, it's because you licked the back of your hand just before you tipped the glass .
Alan, I believe you are right with one exception. Houses that have the sink & faucet in a kitchen island will usually have both hot and cold water softened. I believe the primary reason houses which have the kitchen faucet & sink adjacent to an exterior back wall have cold untreated water to the kitchen faucet is because the builder has to run an untreated cold water line to the outside backyard hose bib anyway, so it is also used for the cold side of the kitchen faucet. It saves running a treated cold water line to the kitchen.

Alert | Posted By alanf on 07/02/2008 9:51 AM It is my understanding that most new houses don't include the kitchen sink cold tap in the softened loop (it's not in the loop at my house). This keeps the sodium out of your ice and tap water. Now if you think that you absorb lots of sodium through your skin when you shower....then you better get Frtzy's system . Thanks to everyone for all the responses and info. I just purchased a new home and the builder told me the loop does run to the kitchen sink and refrigerator. All the installer needs to do is cut a hole in the kitchen countertop and connect it all. Now you have me wondering if that's for the softener or an RO system. I'm going to have to email the builder and find out for sure.

Alert | When the bank foreclosed on the house I purchased the previous owners took everything not nailed down (I'm grateful for that little bit): the automatic garage door openers, free standing range, water softener, and etc.
In the garage is a pipe for a water softener, which I would like to reinstall. I'm at a complete loss, so this thread has been a godsend of sorts. So, thanks.

Alert | I checked out alot of different water softners and ro systems, also worked for one in tempe a few years ago, so know the problems people have with them... we ended up going with ecowater system, got the top of the line softner and ro system with life time warrenties.... total cost $4000, with no interest of finance charges or payments for 6 months.... and if you don't pay it off before the end of 6 months you don't have tons of costs added, because the finance charges don't start till after the 6 months then you have an $80 payment a month.

Alert | Posted By msrachacha on 07/02/2008 8:01 PM RED04 - I just pulled out my receipt and I was off by $400. The total was actually $1700: RO system= Ultima VI $225.00, RO install $40.00, water line $30.00, loop $750; water softener $610. So.... parts=$835, labor $820 + tax. FYI we had the RO run not only to the sink but to our in the door refrigerator dispenser. I think that's where I was mistaken. The softener loop doesn't go to the kitchen sink or fridge( as Cactus Rob said) but there is a line already installed for an RO system. Just need to add the system and cut the hole in the countertop.

Alert | Posted By RED04 on 06/28/2008 4:07 PM Hello~ Just curious if anyone out there has a water softener in their home. We were quoted for a "micro" system from a sub contractor w/Home Depot for $4895 plus $250 for installation. Was told it was the best system because it's automated and top of the line. Went to Maricopa Mtn Plumbing and they have a "metered" system for only $930.00 including installation. Any suggestions? I suggest you go with Maricopa Mountain Plumbing. Great people to do business with. Have used them a few times, reliable and honest!!!!! | | Love Comes To The Forest

It seems like most people paid about $1500 for their systems with an RO. Just wondering why yours was so much more. I know you said you got the top of the line model and lifetime warranties. And I think you said previously you had the salt-free system. Am I right and is that why it was so much more?

Alert | This is a great thread, especially since I'm shopping for a water treatment solution in my new home. We had a salesman from Pristene Water come out a couple of months back and he did the whole water test thing. That was quite the eye opener. After almost 2 hours he finally got to the bottom line of price, which was somewhere around $4500. When we balked at that price he then proceeded to use high pressure sales tactics, and still continues to call us on a regular basis. I have a customer that's up in the Deer Valley area so it gave me an opportunity to check out H2o Concepts, who happened to be right across the street. I like the idea of not having to add salt to the system, but am not privvy to the technicalities of this type of system, which looks very similar to the CL Free system mentioned before. Now I wonder if the price is as similar. I've got another salesman (ugh) coming out next weekend from H2o Concepts, maybe then I can get a price and do some real comparisons. Fritzydoodle: What kind of maintenance does your system require? Any filters to change over time? How about warranty and service?

Alert | Baddeye, We purchased the H2O system a year ago. It's a self contained system which uses electronic impulses to de-crystallize the water. No salt or chemicals of any kind. No filters to change. Every 4 days, the system is automatically backwashed into the washing machine water hose. This is factory set to begin at midnight. There are 3 sizes available, small, med, large if you will. We opted for the medium, it was only $200 more and services a houselhold of 5. The price last year was $4800 plus tax. There is a 10 year warranty. I'm not going to deny it's pricey relative to the RO systems, but I am extremely happy with this system. it does a very effective job and no maintenance. Hope this helps you.

Alert | Well I had a water softener and RO system installed yesterday. From what I understand I have to wait to use up the hard water that is in the water heater before I will see any results from the softener. I purchased the system from American Home Water, Inc. Cost was $1159 total. 32000 gallon tank and 3-stage RO system. Emailed them Sunday, they called me Monday morning, came out Monday afternoon, and had it installed by 3pm. Checked them out with the BBB and Registrar of Contractors and found no problems. Very good work, clean, and efficient. I highly recommend them. There are coupons on their website to download in you do decide to go with them. http://www.americanhomewater.com/index.php

Alert | ok well here's a question. I got a rayne system... gosh 4 months ago?
my dishwasher is still washing like crap. The only time the dishes come out clean is if I totally prewash them and put them in the dishwasher and run it with NO detergent in it whatsoever. Any spec of detergent in there and I get the cloudy crap. I've tried all detergents, all amounts of detergent, and it's just always the same.
If I handwash the dishes everything is perfectly sparkley.
So, whats the deal? help?!?!?! I'm about to go crazy!

Alert | | Are you sure they hooked up the water softener to the dishwasher? Did you call them and ask them about it? All I can do is recommend this website: http://rosieonthehouse.com/ He also has a radio talk show on Saturday mornings if you want to call in and ask for help. You also could try typing in the search box of that website "dishwasher" and check to see what comes up. If that doesn't help try to google your problem, you'd be surprised at what you can find that way.

Use Lime-Away. It works like a charm, no spots!

Alert | well I called them, and they came out and the guy tested the water, and the water in the dishwasher was definitely much worse than the water from the faucet. He had no clue why, and spent some time on the phone and tweaked some things, and now I get to see if it's better I'd better start cookin something so I have dishes to wash! LOL

Alert | Karen .... just a guess, but are you sure your water is hot enough for your dishwasher to work properly? I'm thinking the heating element in your dishwasher is malfunctioning. Check this out by slowly opening the door while it is operating in the wash cycle. The water should be steaming hot. Also, the dishwasher might have been connected to the cold water line (which isn't softened in most homes) by mistake. This might account for the fact that the water heating element isn't working since it isn't designed to heat cold water to the required temp. We use only Cascade detergent and Jet-Dry in the dispenser. Our dishes are spotless and we use the "no heat" drying setting.
