Alert | | I know that no one is thinking about osteoperosis and losing bone mass while we are young, but any carbonated drink whether it's diet or regular soda or sparkling seltzer or bubbly juice is NOT good for your bones. Carbonation breaks down calcium in the body which can lead to osteoperosis. When we are born our bodies start growing bone, but this only happens for so many years. When we are in our 30's drinking all of the milk in the world wont strengthen our bones any more, it just slows down the loss and every year that passes the more we lose. Lets say that you drink carbonated beverages every day and are drinking equal amounts of milk, the carbonation is winning and even if you are taking calcium suppliments, you are wasting your money and your time. Also, sodas that add vitamins and minerals... silly... the carbonation prevents you from absorbing them. Ask your doctor.

Alert | | Even though I am addicted to coke, I realize it is not good for me. I do take the calcium chocolate chews daily that I buy at Sam's. I even try to take one in the mornings and one in the evenings. I would much rather deal with regular soda issues than diet soda issues any day of the week. Plus, they don't taste good. Most people don't pick up a diet and say "YUM". It is an aquired taste. | | *********************** Heat beats snow!!!

Alert | | Do you guys know anything about Iced Tea? Is it better for you or worse? I am a total lover of the stuff and now drink that (and lots of water) instead of all the soda.

Alert | | With iced tea I would say to read the label and make sure that what you are getting is just tea. Better yet, make your own. There are some great tea flavors out there that taste wonderful, are natural and good for you.

Alert | | Tea can be a great alternative to soda and other drinks filled with High Fructose Corn Suryp. I agree with Bionicbunny though, make sure you read the label first. If theres a bunch a stuff you cant pronounce, it's probably not a good idea. | | <------ For Sale!!

Alert | Paracelsus, one of the fathers of modern medicine, said this in the 15th century: "Everything is a poison, there is nothing which is not. The only thing that differentiates a poison from a remedy is the dosage."
I think that applies to many things we ingest, and certainly to both natural and artificial sweeteners. If you can't quit drinking them altogether, I would think cutting back would certainly help. I have read several of the aspartame studies, and have seen nothing to prove that small dosages are harmfull.

Sounds like something a prescriber of harmful drugs would say.

Alert | No, just someone who is equally skeptical of both drug companies and those that promote drugs blindly, as well as those who blame problems on drugs that are not supported by provable facts.
I think you may have missed the main point of my post, which is that ALL drugs, both natural and synthetic, can be harmful in the wrong dosages.

Alert | I'm skeptical if the aspartame in diet soda causes any harm. Statistically speaking, there is just not a lot of proof (and the sample size is very, very large). Given that, I think that the individual's choice of consumption of aspartame should be dependent on two thoughts: 1. Is the consumption of aspartame benefiting myself by preventing excess consumption of other less desirable products (ex. sugar drinks)? If you answered "yes", then drink it. 2. If you answered "no" to #1, since aspartame is not a necessary dietary nutrient, I would not consume it. I answered yes to #1. So, I should drink aspartame diet sodas.

Alert | Doesn't the FDA require warning labels on items that contain aspartame?

Alert | | The warning is required for people with the genetic metabolic disorder PKA. They lack an enzyme necessary for the proper metabolism of the amino acid Phenylalanine, which is one of the components of Aspartame.

The dangers of aspertame go beyond people with PKA!

Alert | | Perhaps, but PKA is the reason for the FDA warning requirement.
