Do you have any suggestions for somebody beginning a new personal running program? Six or seven years ago, I ran regularly. Now, after moving to Arizona and having a child, I haven't ran in years! I'd like to start back up. As I look program information up online, I find various different programs (i.e. time on how much walking and running for different days). I don't really know what to do. When I began running years ago, I was in better shape. Any suggestions?

Check out coolrunning.com It has some beginner programs like the couch 2 5 k. It also has a good forum and lots of info. I really enjoyed it las summer.

Train with your dog! They know all too well when it's time to get out of bed and go running (as I learned at 4:30 a.m. this Saturday - ugh!).

In all seriousness, listen to your body and don't overdo it - that's the quickest way to get tired of running. I like the run-walk-run method, especially if you're training for distance running. Run for a bit, walk for a bit...the interval training blasts calories, and breaks your run up so you don't get bored. Also, it's the perfect time of year to run outdoors. While I don't like my early hours, I love the fact that I got to catch many a meteor shower. There's so much more to see - beats a treadmill anyday, IMO.

<---Look, Ma! I sit, I stay, I match the carpet!

Thanks for the information. I did check out the coolrunning.com website. I am beginning with the run-walk-run, or rather, the walk-run-walk method. I should look into getting one of these lazy dogs up and at 'em with me. I have three to choose from after all! Thanks again.
