Alert | I have a question about tipping a hairdresser. If the person is the owner of the salon, is it necessary to tip that person for services? I am assuming if they are the owner, they receive the whole fee so a tip is not necessary. Please correct me if this isn't so. Thanks

Alert | When I was growing up that's what I was told...you don't tip the owner of a barber shop or the restaurant owner, etc. They're getting the whole amount anyway. Now, however, they even have tip jars at places like Baskin Robbins (WHY am I tipping you to scoop my ice cream?) so I think that the feeling is different these days.

Alert | even if the barber is the owner. If he hooked my hair up and did a great job I think he deserves a tip. but thats me I don't like being cheap.

Alert | I agree, Robert. I don't like being cheap, either and having worked in food service for many years, I'm a good tipper but.....
Sometimes I feel a little taken advantage of these days. More and more types of service are actively requesting tips for simply doing a job that they were hired and paid to do. Typically, the food service industry actually works for tips and their per hour wage reflects that, but I'm still a little confused and yes, irritated, by the tip jars in ice cream parlors, etc. | | I loathe people who keep dogs. Alert | | It has been my experience that at the nicer salons, the owner will actually be offended if you tip. It's odd, I know, but it's considered tacky to tip the salon owner, even if your hair looks great!

Alert | I went to my stylist for years...when we lived in Philly. She was the owner. I didn't tip, but at Christmas and her birthday...she received really nice gifts. Here I tip...no Christmas or birthday girfts...I'm too scared to try it the other way. And she is the owner.
