Hi all,

Well, I have been reading the Weight Watchers thread and a bunch of other ones. I know for a FACT I have a lot of weight that I want to lose. It is hard to get into Phoenix all the time, doesn't look like we have a WW opening out here any time soon, and I don't want to wait (should be weight) until there is so here is my idea.

If we could get a group of people that all have the same goal...to lose weight...but need the support and drive of others to keep you going...why don't we just start our own group?

My thoughts: WW is basically based on portion control. Something I think we all know but don't do. BE HONEST! I think that we all have great recipes that we could skinny down with, but get sick of the same stuff; I think we all don't want to invest a bunch and have no results. I think between all of us we have a lot of knowledge and can help and inspire each other instead of just talking about it forever!

So, if I can find a place for people to meet, and I mean ANYONE that wants to meet...people that want to lose 100 pounds and people that want to lose 5 pounds, if we each pitch in $5 a meeting we could take half of whatever is collected in a month and give it to the "biggest loser" each month! Talk incentive...this is COLD HARD CASH to go buy smaller clothes. If we need to, maybe we can give part of the rest to help get a room, use it for copy fees for recipes, create our own cookbook and work out stuff. WHO KNOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can trade recipes, be honest, have weigh ins (I have a scale that recalibrates itself all the time and figures fat % and BM) do before and after photos, set goals...pitch in for "final make over photos," give each other inspriation, talk about what works and what doesn't, etc. This would be OUR place and we can make it what we want!

I live way south of town but would love to find someone to walk with. A gym is probably the next step. I know we all have different needs, are different ages, different jobs, etc., so the first meeting would be a "what do we want" time. Trust me, if I can do this, anyone in Maricopa can.

I know that I have a lot to lose and I am intimidated by that and having only people that want to lose 5 pounds, but the whole point is that anyone that wants to lose in order to feel better about themself should have a place to go do just that. It is TIME TO STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND JUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

So what do you say Maricopa, anyone else out there game and willing to try to create something that will have hopefully amazing results for all of us? The way I look at it, how in the world can I go wrong? If I commit to this and trying to create a place for all of us...I have to lose, huh?

I will be on vacation a few weeks the beginning of Oct. but I will be happy to try to get this started now and have see if we could be ready to meet within the next month if there are people that are intersted.

Interested? email me with the following info to nancyj@hughes.net If you want just cut and past the following into an email and fill in the blanks. I'll see how many people are interested and we can go from there. I PROMISE, I will keep you all posted. Keep this post alive!

Name
Email
Phone contact
When could you meet? Days? Afternoons? Nights?
Aprox. weight you want to lose?
WHat would you like to see MOST out of a "club" like this? (weigh ins, accountability, recipes, exercise, walking, inspirational talks, etc! PLEASE give me ideas)
Age? (I just want an idea of what the group would look like...EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!

I PROMISE you the following:

I will try to get this started by the end of October.

I will try listen to ALL your suggestions and ideas and this will not just be what I think, it will be a creation of what we all think.

I will present whatever we decide on as needed at the first meeting and get ideas for the next. Trust me...I will be looking for input!!

I will commit to makeing this work. (For anyone that knows me, if I commit, I do it.) (WOW, was that an eye opener...maybe I have just never really committed before)

Anyway, once again, nancyj@hughes.net if interested.

Great idea. Maybe a support thread can be started before the actual meetings. Those interested can post a small amount of information about what weight loss method they are using, where they are at now, ultimate goal, and incremental goals etc. Members could then edit their one post each time they meet a goal or want to add information. If we did it this way, we wouldn't be able to add encouraging comments, just have to pm the encouragement. This way all posts will be in order and will be easier to find vs looking through all the comments.

Would 85239.com put a sub-category under health just for this?

Of course we wouldn't want anyone posting horrible comments, just encouraging ones.

The low carb website has set up a support system like this. Here is a few of the entries.

Just an idea.

Great ideas! I would love to find a way to have us be able to give each other feedback all the time. I think that is important. WIth more and more people moving here that know nobody, it also is a great way to get to know your community. I wonder if it could be a locked topic? I don't know what that involves, but it would be worth talking to Carolyn about.

Keep coming up with ideas people! Great idea Judy.

By the way, I'll be giving you a call later today!

Nancy

You could set up a Google or Yahoo group then set it so people have to register and be approved in order to join. I've set up a couple Google groups and been part of a Yahoo group, both are really easy and free.

If you participate in Bountiful Baskets they have a forum you can access (with registration, which is FREE). Their forum has lots of good recipes that pertain to the produce that comes in the baskets as well as information on the group offerings. I would love to participate in something like this.

I thought about the Google and Yahoo sites, but would want it closed off so that only members could access their info and not have it out there for the world. I need someone that knows more than I do, to do that.

I do participate in Bountiful Baskets...even though I have been out of town for the last 2 and will miss the next one, too, but you are right about their goodies. I LOVE their produce! I know they have a forum, but again, it is open and I think might keep people from posting their own info. For a chat, yep, it could work.

Great idea. I am also part of an msn group with people who had babies the same month I had my youngest one, and it's worked great for us over the last year and it's private.

There's a great website I've been using called sparkpeople.com. It's a fantastic community of people from all over the world with the same goal of getting healthy and losing weight. There are groups upon groups to join and participate in as well as the option to create your own, I think! That might be a way you could have a Maricopa Group or something.......

You can create profile pages (similar to myspace) with pictures, about your goals, your successes, weight loss tracking, etc and can add friends (other members who have pages, too). There's even a journaling and blog component so your friends can read all about what's going on in your life if you choose to make them public (might be good in between your actual meetings??).

It has meal tracker and exercise tracker components so you can stay accountable and track how many calories, fat, fiber, protein, etc you need to get to your goal weight and how many calories you're burning each day. There are articles on every topic to support you with any questions or frustration you might be having. They offer weekly strategies to keep you focused and help you change your habits. I have lost 20 lbs this year and have never been so focused as I have been since I started using sparkpeople.com.

I don't know if this would work within the scope of your idea for a local weight loss group, but I just wanted to throw my two cents in because I love it so much and it has helped me be successful with my lifestyle changes! Did I mention it is completely free???????

Good luck to all of you! I know how challenging it can be - but it feels so great to take control and reach your goal! =)

Hi people! Well, our response has been great and I am afraid at least for now, we need to stop adding members. We are up to 12 and our biggest problem is where to meet with more than that. I will post if we find a spot! Good luck to all and if you are one of the 12...check your email! Nancy

I am sorry my bootcamp buddies link does not work, but maybe you can google it. For the people that did not make the group. I know that bootcamp buddies has a section on the forum for people to help each other out and see if they live near each other, they also have before and after pictures and how long it took everyone. Good luck to you guys!!! I just saw someone the other day that lost about 55 pounds on WW (it took her a year) and she looks great!! She said she keeps her weight in check by not going over 5 pounds!!

We could meet at my house. It's pretty roomy. The only problem is it would have to be 7:00 instead of 6:00.

what about a church here in maricopa? i know first baptist hosts AA meetings, is anyone a member that could check with the pastor on the doability of this? i hate that the group is now closed, i totally missed this thread, what with giving birth and dealing with a new baby. if we can get into a church meeting space, what is everyone's feeling on a larger group? how about doing 2 different groups, either back to back on the same night or on 2 different nights? while i only have 15 pounds of baby weight to shed, i feel that i have a lot to contribute to a group like this, as well as a lot to learn from others. i used to weight 312 pounds and had gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago. while the surgery was a fantastic tool for weight loss, i did relearn eating afterwards and eat very differently now than i ever did before.
