Run upstairs to bed at night.
1 step per second
average 800 steps a week.

I'd rather live one day as a lion, than my whole life as a lamb.

When do you run? Whenever I can, but I'm a morning person. 4:30/5:00 am if I'm working, when I wake up (around 7 am) if I'm not.
How long running? My whole life! Well, since I was twelve, so well more than half of it.
Avg pace? 10 min. mile.
Avg slow pace? 11:30 min. mile.
Avg fast pace? 8:30 min. mile (but only if I'm doing a 5k or less).
Miles per week? 20-30
Current short term goal? Teach my new pup to run with me (luckily, he's a quick learner).
Long term goal? Qualify for the Boston Marathon. Run it on the day that the Red Sox play a home game. Get tickets! (kidding - my real long term goal is to "just keep running, just keep running, just keep running, running, running" - sorry, Dory).
Favorite place to run? Trail running, but anywhere outdoors will do.
Do you use an online training log? (ex. mapmyrun.com, nikerunning.com, coolrunning.com, marathonguide.com, etc.) Nope. I'm too embarrassed - have you seen how fast some of these runners are?
Past accomplishments? I ran the Sedona 1/2 marathon the inaugural year. It was the hardest (think cold, windy, and hilly) and most satisfying run of my life!
Anything else? Just to say thank you, Java, for posting this! Fun topic.

**If anyone is interested in some "starter" runs in the Glennwilde area, PM me. I have taken a considerable amount of time off, so I'm not sure where I stand... it may be slow-going, but some company during the process might be nice. Beginning runners, this could be a good opportunity!**

Hey irongrl, maybe we can get together some time. I'm 7 weeks out from starting my 'official' 1/2 training. I'm currently doing my long runs on Thursdays but am moving them to Fridays, that works best for my schedule.

Thanks for putting your info up.

I have a question. Some of you have (what seems to me anyway) a very fast, fast pace. I would love to think that someday I could run a 9 minute mile! How long had you been running before you could do a 9 minute mile and how far canyou go at that pace?

Bionicbunny ~ I know how you feel, my time is slow too, but I have only been running for about 1 1/2 years now.
I have been told that track work will really help your time. There are lots of different groups that get together at tracks to do this. When you pick up your next pair of shoes, (if you are going to a good running store), they can probably give you information of several different groups.
Just with constant running, I have seen and felt improvement with my run.
How long have you been running for?
I usually go to RunAZ for my shoes. There is one in Ahwhatuee & one in Gilbert. I actually go to the one in Gilbert, if you happen to stop by there, ask Dan for information on a group. He is the manager and AWESOME! He has been so much help to me.

Yeah I wouldn't know about the fast times, but I know speed work, well, works.

I went to Sole Sports running the other day and they were awesome. I actually emailed them and received a response within 12 hours! They have a really nice store and the lady who helped me was really nice and knowledgeable. They also carry the inserts that I use and you can return things if they don't work! (what a novel concept, not...)

Anyway, they have group runs during the week and on the weekends. They are at Rural and Warner on the NE corner.

Good luck!

It's taken me *forever* to be able to run that pace, and I'm no good for it over the 3 1/2 mile mark. But I've been running since I was a pre-teen. And, I must add, I can only do it if I'm well-rested. Some tips from "Her Sports and Fitness" mag:

-Keep your head up, and only look down with your eyes (doesn't work if the sun's coming up and you're running in that direcion).
-Let your arms pump naturally at your side at a 45 degree angle (doesn't work when you're holding a leash).
-Push off with the ball of your foot and land with your heel (doesn't work if your dog is feeling recalcitrant).

Hope that helps! <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

Thank you all for the advice and encouragement!
superSK, I have been running for about a month but I have been going to the gym and using either the eliptical or the bike 3 to 5 days a week for a couple of years now. Somehow I thought the transition to running would be easier than it has been. I run about a 12 minute mile and only go about 3 miles and I'm pooped.
JennyP, it's funny how your last tip was to push off with the ball of your foot. I had made a consious effort to do this but the next day the muscles along side my shin bones hurt so the next time I ran I tried to use more of my upper leg (if that makes sense). Should I keep doing it anyway? Will those muscles eventually get stronger and not hurt?
Also when I first started to run I think my legs were too far out in front of me so I have been trying to make my stride longer behind me and not take such a big step in front of me. Am I doing the right thing?
I know these sound like stupid questions but I have never, until the last couple of years, been an athletic type. In fact for too many years (my 20's) I smoked and got NO exercise at all (with the exception of lifting a beer bottle to my mouth that is; oh or dancing while completely wasted which was more like stumbling). Now many years later I really want to be in shape but it is incredibly difficult to build mid-life muscles when I have never had them before.
I appreciate any words of wisdom that any of you would like to share! Like, do you ever check your heart rate while exercising? I can talk ok when I am jogging but when I'm on a treadmill and use the heart rate monitor, my heart rate seems fast. A couple people have told me not to pay attention to that, what do you think?

Oh Bionicbunny... I know exactly how you feel.
I was exactly like you before I started to run. I was never the athletic type at all.
But about 1 1/2 years ago, I just decided that I thought running a 1/2 marathon sounded like a good idea, and a good way to get in shape.
I remember the beginning being so hard. I personally think the key is always pushing yourself a little harder, farther and faster than you think you can.
I remember when I was exactly where you are now, at about 3 miles, and not feeling like I could ever get farther. But I talked to the right person who encouraged me and explained to me that since I have never done anything like this before, my muscles are just getting used to the running, and to keep pushing myself. He told me that it was going to get really hard trying to get up to 5 miles, but once I reached 5 miles, I would be able to increase my miles very easy. And man was he ever right.
I just kept going and trying... (don't feel bad walking when you need to, just going that farther distance, even if you have to walk some of it will help you increase those miles).
I remember the day that I hit 5 miles, I was so happy and I knew that day that I woudl be able to do a 1/2 marathon. And I was right..
Now 1 1/2 years later, 5 miles is a short run for me. (Plus, you hit that cool runners high at about 5 miles.. and I LOVE it!)

I personally feel that when I first started, when I tried to change my stide and do what everyone told me was the "right" way to run, I had a harder time.
I am sure it isn't the right thing, but I say for now, just run how you feel comfortable, and after you have been running longer, then maybe look at your stide a little more.

Bionicbunny congrats on trying to make a positive change and you should be proud of your accomplishments. I know that for me the hardest part of my run is getting off of the couch and out the door. There is a great website that I used when I started running called www.coolrunning.com. They have lots of articles on running and a forum. It is a great place to get questions answered, share your victories and miseries and just get inspiration to get off of the couch. I don't usually post there but I do enjoy lurking! Good luck and I hope it's useful to you.

Coolrunnings.com is a great website, so is Runnersworld.com, lots of great info.

As for stride and what not, you need to do what feels comfortable to you, I'm sure there are little things you can tweak, but if it's uncomfortable don't hurt yourself. Keeping your head up will help. The other thing that will help tremendously is upper body and core work outs. Part of why people start slumping over when they run is because their upper bodies are tired. I noticed a marked difference when I started really working my core and upper body.

I hardly ever check my heart rate, I go on the perceived exertion scale. If that's working for you then let it. I know there are times that I have checked and I know it's up there.

Another idea is to make sure that you are doing the easy, hard, easy rule, don't kill yourself all the time.

You are on the right track, keep it up!!!
