All of my hormones are all jacked up.... long story. Although I don’t have thyroid problems (all my other hormones are screwed up!) I do see a really good endocrinologist!
Dr. Seema Ahluwalia she is a GREAT Endocrinologist in Chandler she is only there on Fridays.
I think what I like is that she tells me like it is I really like that she dose not beat around the bush!

It was not a website that Dr. Kerr gave me, it was the website where I originally heard her name. There are several very good recomendations on there for her. There is a section called "Top Doctors" on www.thyroid-info.com. I have found alot of useful information on that site as well as thyroid.about.com.

When you meet with her the first time, make sure you let her know everything that has gone on. If you can get copies of prior blood results, she likes to have those. But the first thing she wants to do with me is additional bloodwork, to include thyroid tests that the other Drs, including an Endo, did not order, but have read during my research that it is important. Then meet back with her in a week to discuss what my treatment options are and what she suggests. I swear, I think my appointment lasted nearly an hour! And never once felt rushed! I had a file folder full of stuff with me when I went in there, test results, notes I made regarding my symptoms and timetables, so I would not forget, copies of some of the research I had done, etc... She had the patience of a saint!

I just hope from here that my physical symptoms can be helped as well as my heart and mind have been in just one visit!

Good Luck! Maybe we should develop a Thyroid Disease support group here in the Copa...seems like there are quite a few of us for our little town!

</div>

LOL it does seem like there are quite a few in town. I'm really glad to know that you are very happy with her and she is apparently one of the top doctors when dealing with thyroids. Now I can't wait to meet her. I'm excited to go to both of my appointments. I will be surprised if I really do even have problems with my thyroid, or what the real problem even is. Now hearing about this new doctor I feel like my previous doctor didn't do jack! So... I'm getting kinda anxious!!! yay... LOL

Thanks sarahc, I'll keep her name in mind. Obviously I have my appointment in the end of Oct. with Dr. Joan Bailey except its not with her, its with another doctor that works with her. I think her name was Grace Matta, thats the earliest I could get an appointment, so I took her for the first time. If it doesn't work out, I'll try your endo. Now, I'm just anxious to go and meet these doctors and get some blood work done and find out exactly whats going on.

I took me 3 months to get in to Dr. Ahluwalia...

You may want to make a back up appointment so that one is in the works incase you don’t like the one you are scheduled to see... sounds dumb but you can always cancel it if you don’t need it.

I am not sure why such a long wait for endos here in AZ? I know there is a general Dr. shortage in this state but for some reason GI’s and endos are hard to get appointments for!

Good luck with your thyroid...

Thanks.
Ya, I have pretty much insisted that my doctors be female. On our insurace there were only like six endo's to choose from. Not sure how many there were total.

Funny thing about personal opinions...and personal preferences.......
Dr. Seema Ahluwalia is the endo that I just fired as my endo dr. because of what I considered to be poor care!
I think she has an absolutely horrible "bedside manor" and is only concerned with treating thyroid disease based on test results without any concern for your actual symptoms. All patients are not the same....therefore can not be treated the same way!
But, as long as she works for someone...I say more power to you. But with my experience with her, I would NEVER recommend her!
Go figure :-)

I'll definately keep it in mind. When I made my appointment at the Endo. the office staff seemed to be really nice and helpful so I'm really hoping that the doctor will be to. I really wanted to see Dr. Joan Bailey but I would have had to wait a month longer and I just want to get some stuff figured out and need to see atleast someone at this point. I chose Grace Matta, and she works with Dr. Bailey. If Dr. Matta doesn't work out then I will definately be trying Dr. Bailey. Plus, I have an appointment with Dr. Kerr in a few days. I'm really excited, and anxious to figure out whats going on.

Thanks everyone for your advice, support, and reccomendations.

Funny how opinions can differ greatly from one person to the next. I am highly involved in my care and actually go in to Dr. A's office of a list of medication changes that I need based on the blood work (I have a copy faxed to my home before my appointment) and how my body feels. Her onion has only differed from mine once and I went her route... all worked out. I can see where you coming from with the bedside manor as she is usually direct... and I like it!

My last Dr. wanted to know how my husband was and how the dog was and if everything was ok at work and I just wanted my meds changed and knew what dose I needed. I canned her because she was tooooo nice... LOL

Thanks A/V Queen for posting that info, I was drawing a blank on the practice name

Still Waiting- I took Armour for awhile and had no side affects. I know what you are going thru with the Endo trying to get it between the levels, I had one like that but since seeing Shadmanny he is more concerned with how I feel vs. what a test tells him.
I know its frustrating, especially when one minute you are up and then down but once you get all leveled out it will be fine. Overall it has taken me a year to figure out what my body needs
Right now I am on Cytomel and Levoxyl...

</div>

Yeah really? More concerned with how you feel than tests?

I have an appointment for Novemeber. It isn't with doctor Shadmanny, it is with Dr. Brard. I am wishing on falling stars that the doctor I am seeing won't just look at lab values. I need someone to listen to how I feel.

Do you know anything about the doctor I am seeing? They are in the same practice. I wonder if they follow along the same patterns of thinking...

I am really at my end of feeling so exhausted and all of the other things that go along with this <img src='http://www.85239.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/sad.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Sad' align='absmiddle'>

For a G.P. (general practitioner), I couldn't recommend Dr. Purohit at Maricopa Family Health (he took over for Dr. Copus) enough! I have very complicated thyroid issues, and he took the time to truly listen, and I would recommend him to anyone as a family doctor on that alone. Plus, he's agreed to help me through my rather complex thyroid issues, and for that I am truly grateful.

Wow. He was no help to me. I have all of the symptoms of such problem. My TSH is only at a 2.87...deemed normal. However, the way I feel is not normal. He only looked at my lab values. He didn't listen to how I feel. I walked out of his office. Infact he told me, "If I go to an Endo with this TSH value, they will think that I am crazy." Were your levels way off for him to listen to you?

Actually Marni - if your TSH was 2.87 that is not in the normal range according to the new standards. The new range is 0.25 to 2.5 - so your TSH level is slightly above normal. The closer you are to 1.0 the better you will feel. The old range went to 5.0. Some labs are using 3.0 as the normal upper limit.

And it isn't just the one test. The doctor should be reading the tests together. If your T3 is high, T4 low and TSH 'normal' you are still symptomatic for hypothyroidism.

And yes NYFiggy - hair loss is a symptom of hypothyroid. For more information go to:

So how long have these new values been used? I went to the doctor that I walked out of, I told him that the lab values have changed. He asked me, "where did you get your info?" I told him, "I have done some research." He looked at me like I was crazy. According to him the "normal range" is still at a 4.5 I am at my the end right now with how I feel. I wish I could get someone to listen to me about this. I am hoping that the endo will listen to me

In 2003 the range was lowered to 3.0
I've read about some docs calling for 2.5 to be the standard, but it hasn't been accepted by the endo society to my knowledge.

Both hypo AND hyper can be cause for hairloss. Also reaction to thyroid meds and trying different ones may be necessary.

Mine hasn't stopped falling out, but then again my thyroid is seriously messed up.

It shouldn't make you go bald. Think of it more of like a dog shedding. Its a side effect from the medicine (synthroid- or its generic) This is where I get a lot of my info from. Check out this website. Sorry, I don't know how to do the links.
