 Alert | I have copies of the 3 sets of bloodwork that I have had done since I was diagnosed. I do not see anything on them that specifically says thyroid antibody test and I do not remember the Dr. talking to me about it.
All three of the test results have results that say T3 UPTAKE and T4 (THYROXINE) (2 seperate numbers). In all 3 cases the numbers were within th reference ranges. It was just the TSH that was way out of wack. Any other suggestions on what I might have them check out or what other tests to run?
Oh and to add insult to injury (or is it injury to insult?) my metabolism is completely shot to hell and I am gaining weight DAILY! UGHHH...can you hear me screaming from here in RED? No wait...she crying....no...she screaming.....UGH....whats next! | |

Alert | First of all, I totally sympathize with anyone who suffers with thyroid troubles! Every woman on my mom's side of my family does, it seems.
For a G.P. (general practitioner), I couldn't recommend Dr. Purohit at Maricopa Family Health (he took over for Dr. Copus) enough! I have very complicated thyroid issues, and he took the time to truly listen, and I would recommend him to anyone as a family doctor on that alone. Plus, he's agreed to help me through my rather complex thyroid issues, and for that I am truly grateful.
I may end up seeing an endocrinologist if he recommends one, so if you find a good one, let me know. Thiskiss, don't give up. It does take time to find the right dose. Still waiting, keep trying, too. I was on Armour for quite some time, and I'm all for natural solutions. But Fritzydoodle is right - it does vary from dose to dose.

You can't take the three tests at face value. If the T3 is at the high end of normal - and the T4 is at the low end of normal, and the TSH is too high/low... you are not regulated. TSH= Thyroid Stimulating Hormone - this is the one that tells your thyroid how much to work. Depending on the lab, it should be between 0.3 and 3.0 with around 1.0-1.5 as optimum. The older standard is 0.5 to 5.0. Again, if your level is 2.9 - it is still within normal, but your thyroid is being told to work harder than at 1.0.
As I said, it isn't just being 'normal' - it's where in the normal range in relation to each other. Plus there are Free T3 and T4 tests in addition to Total T3 and T4. Free is what is unbound and available in your blood. Total is just that - what is the total count in your blood.
And if you are nearing menopause - forget it. Add funky estrogen and testosterone levels to funky thyroid levels... Hello. Goodbye. wait - go. Yes. No.

Started feeling really tired, gaining weight like crazy ,rash, leg cramps, fatigue, felt like a brick was laying on my chest and muscle aches. My sister was next, pretty much feeling the same way I was. My daughter was the last to be diagnoised. She started out feeling really tired then one night at work she called me and said she felt like her head was going to explode. I rushed her to the emergency room. They treated her for a migraine. We did head scans, spinal tap, all types of meds and her headache would not go away, it was constant. She was like a zombie when she would take all the meds and it would barely take the edge off the headache. Finally our family doctor decided to check her TSH and it was at 40. Once we got on meds my sisters TSH went into the normal range quickly. My daughter and I still are not in the normal range but we are getting closer and starting to feel better. We have an appointment with Valley Endocrine Associates (Dr. Brard). It is taking us six months to get in, but we are anxious to see what he has to say. My family doctor checks our TSH every six weeks to see if we are getting closer to normal, but highly recommended Dr, Brard. My family doctor found it very unusual that all three of us would come down with is all at the same time. Oh did I mention my sister and I live next door to each other!!! Weird huh! Alert | I go to Jill Kerr and Mixtures also. Both in Ahwatukee. Jill is just off Ray and 46th Street.
I am subclinical hypothyroid...I have all of the symptoms, just not quite into the numbers yet, but darn close. Jill started me on Armour and we are tweaking the dosage until it hits the right spot. It does mean blood tests about once a month, etc., but worth it if my results are better.
My adreanals are shot and that is why I was sent to Mixtures. Lori has a vitamin plan that I did for a few months. I thought it was expensive and I really wasn't feeling any different....I was also taking like 25 vitamins a day. I did stop that. I'm looking into other, more natural ways to deal with that.

YES YES YES!!!
Dr Jill Kerr is top notch, really a great dr. And Lori at Mixtures Pharmacy is one of the most educated pharmacists that I have even met in the field of hormones (thyroid, HRT for men and women, and adrenal fatigue).

Alert | | I have had hypo...for almost twenty years myself, along with Hashimoto's disease. Last year I was feeling lousy again and my doctor said she wanted me to go to a rhumatologist, for further testing. As it turns out, I also have Lupus, and am starting menepause. That's a whole other issue! Anyway, she switched me back to Levoxly. It is another brand like synthroid. But I had to go on it a long time ago when my levels weren't regulating properly. My doctor back then told me that Synthroid was not always absorbed properly, and people have had better results from Levoxyl...since I switched, I feel great and stopped gaining weight, and it's been almost a year without any level changes! you might want to mention this to your doctors. | |

Alert | | part of the problem with thyroid supplements (such as Synthroid and its generic Levoxyl) is that they only treat ONE of the THREE thyroid hormones you need. all 3 need to be in balance for it all to work right. and not all commericially available dosages are correct for everyone. a compounding pharmacy can create a dose of exactly what you need in very, very specific doses. I urge everyone with thyroid issues to get current copies of bloodwork and seek out the council of a compounding pharmacist that can communicate your exact needs to your dr. | |

Alert | Not even close. It's PERSONAL attention, personally formulated doses and dosage forms (hate the taste of liquid meds, they can flavor it, put it in a capsule, etc). They can make VERY SPECIFIC dosages, not commerically available. If you have special dietary requirements (no sugar, no gluten, no animal products) they can make medication for you.
The pharmacist, is SUPER NICE and SUPER KNOWLEGEABLE, and can work with you and your doctor to make your medication exactly what YOU need, not what millions of other people need.

Alert | I got a recommendation for Dr. Jill Kerr from a "thyroid-help" website and my first appointment with her was today. I was extremely impressed. She took plenty of time with me, listened to my complaints, symptoms, history, etc... She immediately set up some labs that include additional testing none, even the endo, had done and I am getting those done tomorrow and back to Dr. Kerr in 1-2 weeks.
For the first time in many months....it looks like there may be light at the end of the tunnel!
I would do a happy dance if my damn legs didn't hurt so bad! | |

Alert | That is so good to know. I have been making appointments with doctors like crazy this week. Going to the Endo. in the end of October, and have an appointment with Dr. Jill Kerr I believe Sept. 27. ( I think I could have gone earlier but I have a busy schedule) Now I just gotta work on getting my records from my old doctor.

Alert | It was not a website that Dr. Kerr gave me, it was the website where I originally heard her name. There are several very good recomendations on there for her. There is a section called "Top Doctors" on www.thyroid-info.com. I have found alot of useful information on that site as well as thyroid.about.com.
When you meet with her the first time, make sure you let her know everything that has gone on. If you can get copies of prior blood results, she likes to have those. But the first thing she wants to do with me is additional bloodwork, to include thyroid tests that the other Drs, including an Endo, did not order, but have read during my research that it is important. Then meet back with her in a week to discuss what my treatment options are and what she suggests. I swear, I think my appointment lasted nearly an hour! And never once felt rushed! I had a file folder full of stuff with me when I went in there, test results, notes I made regarding my symptoms and timetables, so I would not forget, copies of some of the research I had done, etc... She had the patience of a saint!
I just hope from here that my physical symptoms can be helped as well as my heart and mind have been in just one visit!
Good Luck! Maybe we should develop a Thyroid Disease support group here in the Copa...seems like there are quite a few of us for our little town!
