What kind of problems if I can ask? I've been on synthroid for close to 20 years with minimal problems. (Other than I am getting fat. But that could be because I like to eat and don't like to get off my butt and exercise!)

I have many problems with this let me tell you. I am also on synthyroid. When I read about this online like on webmd or whatever it seems like I have I have hyper. so I'm not exactly sure. I haven't been to the doctor in quite awhile because its so hard to get an appointment and she has just be so negative the past times I have gone. My weight is also a huge issue mainly because I do work during dinner time and don't get home until later and then I just eat dinner and go to bed. I have been trying to stop but my schedule just doesn't exactly work that way I guess you could say.

Jennse I am just going to a regular family doctor. My doctor has never said anything about an Endocronologist. Who are you going to. I do need to find a new doctor badly! I am seriously ready to stop taking the medicine when my prescription runs out (i've just been getting refills) because I don't want to go back to her. Everytime I go, I always know what she is going to say and its just getting ridicoulous. "You need to lose weight and then everything will be back to normal." Ugh... the frustration.

I have been on medicine for hypothyroidism for 20 years. I only have problems if I don't take my medicine. I feel awful without it. Otherwise I am just fine! You should see an endocrinologist. Medicine doesn't work for all people. Some people even need surgery on their thyroid. I don't think it would be wise to stop taking it until another doctor can get a better idea of what is going on. I was always told that the thyroid gland produces the most important hormone. If you are pregnant or think about becoming pregnant, you will need to have this regulated or you can run into many complications. I had two preemies, believe me your thyroid is not something you mess with.

I was not overweight when I was diagnosed. In fact, they thought my cycle stopped because I ran too much and had less body fat. It stopped because my thyroid was out of whack.

Get yourself a referral to an endocrinologist. This is not just something you let go.

Let us know what happens. Good luck!

I did go to a family Dr for awhile and she was good but I needed better...I started getting very emotional and sluggish. My endocronologist is way, way out in Mesa off of Power Rd. It does take time to see any of them....I waited almost 6-8 months before I could get an appt with that office. So it might take sometime for an appt, but I would def switch from your family Dr and go to a Specialist. OMG I am drawing a blank on the office name but my DR's name is Shadmanny....not sure of spelling either

I do know the thyroid is one of the most important things you have.
Who are you guys using as family doctors? I would prefer to go somewhere in Ahwatukee or Chandler. Do you know of any good places to go?

I see Dr. Paige in Ahwatukee in the Urgent Care building. She won't even let me refill my prescription every six months unless I am in to have my levels checked. Another gal from my work sees her too and she has the same problem with thyroid as well. It is just something that has to be monitored regularly. You will feel better once it is under control.

When I was first diagnosed, I did see an endocrinologist. Just make an appointment to see someone other than who you have been going to. Don't just let this go.

That is actually the office we were going to also. Although we were seeing her NP. Don't get me wrong, I think all three of the ladies in there are wonderful. Kerri just doesn't seem to be as friendly anymore and I feel like she is just judging me. (I asked her for a prescription for something else and she wasn't very happy about it, and gave me a whole big long lecture and I would be here forever if I talked about it)

I mostly see the other one that had the baby a while back. I can't think of her name. There is also another one there that also told the girl I work with to lose weight. Wrong....just wrong! I have never had that one....I think her first name starts with an L.

You can't fake thyroid problems. It’s all in your blood and the test results. I have had it for twenty years and was told I would need to be on the medicine all my life. It has changed throughout the years. It definitely fluctuates. I wouldn't dare go off of it because I do not like the way I feel.

I am sorry you are having such a bad experience with this!

I also see Dr. Shadmany. He is with East Valley Endocrine Associates. 480-981-8088. It does take a long time to get to see him, tell them to put you on the cancellation list and tell them you will see his assistant. That will get you in faster and he reviews the info and usually comes in to see you as well. He does talk with a heavy accent and fast, make sure you tell him that you need him to slow down.

Funny to come on here and see this post. I just logged on and was going to post and see if anyone has experience with this. I was just diagnosed 2 months ago and was off work for 3 1/2 months, just returned 2 weeks ago. I am also on Synthroid, but still having ALOT of symptoms: muscle pain, trouble concentrating, lack of energy. I went from my TSH being 5 times what it should be, to after 6 weeks on Synthroid to it being 1/2 of what it should be. I have cut back on the Synthroid to try to get that back up...but REGARDLESS OF WHAT THAT NUMBER IS...I AM STILL UNABLE TO FUNCTION NORMALLY DUE TO THE SIDE AFFECTS! I AM SO SICK OF THIS!! I hate my endocronologist, she is only concerned in getting that number between the target numbers and could care less about my symptoms. Does anyone have experience with complications like this?

Your symptoms will go away once your levels are normalized. That could take several months. Hang in there. For more information go to

Has anyone been on Armour-natural desiccated thyroid hormones? What about taking T3 along with your T4? I have read alot of information on the web that gives 2 very different, completely reasonable sides of this arguement. Has anyone discussed these options with their Dr.? My Endo doesn't even have time to hear about my physical symptoms, much less have time to speak to me about alternatives.

Thanks A/V Queen for posting that info, I was drawing a blank on the practice name

Still Waiting- I took Armour for awhile and had no side affects. I know what you are going thru with the Endo trying to get it between the levels, I had one like that but since seeing Shadmanny he is more concerned with how I feel vs. what a test tells him.
I know its frustrating, especially when one minute you are up and then down but once you get all leveled out it will be fine. Overall it has taken me a year to figure out what my body needs
Right now I am on Cytomel and Levoxyl...

Thanks everyone for the support and suggestions! It has just been a maddening summer trying to get this under control! I am going to check with my insurance and see if Dr. Shadmanny participates. I have made an appointment with my current Endo for next Tuesday for what I am considering a "showdown". I am going to let her know that she needs to hear understand and treat my symptoms and not the magic number! I anticipate needing a new Endo by that afternoon!
Was anyone diagnosed as having another autoaumine based on your symptoms? It has been suggested to me, by my general MD, not the Endo, everything from Chronic Pain Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and that is only relating to the pain...I don't even want to mention the emotional issues!
I find it ironic that I could possibly "all the sudden" develop these other syndromes at the same time I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I believe all of the symptoms are from the hypo and just need to be addressed and fixed!
As some of you know, I am in the process of an international adoption, we should be meeting our daughter and bringing her home sometime in approximately 6 months. I am scared to death that I will not be able to get back to "normal" and that the way I feel now is just "the way it is"...I don't know if I have strength to raise a child if this doesn't get any better!

Okay, one more thing...for those of you who see Dr. Shadmany. Is it Shahzad Shadmany, MD? He is in my insurance provider directory, but at an address on 63rd St. in Mesa. I looked on dex online and he is only listed at that same address only...not a Chandler address. Is this the same Dr.????
Thanks again to everyone!

The problem with the Armour - desiccated thyroid meds is the dosage is not a 'pure' level. It varies from pill to pill. Synthyroid is for T4 only. If your T3 levels are off - you need a different med - Cytomel is one.

From what I've read, thyroid problems and autoimmune problems are hand in hand related. One ascerbates the other. If you haven't read the threads on both diet sodas and fatigue. There is a lot posted on artifical sweeteners. Asparatame will make your symptoms WORSE!

Your thyroid controls your endocrine system. That one hormone level out of whack makes all the rest malfunction. Depression, problems with your cycle, infertility, weight gain/loss, joint pain, fatigue are all major symptoms of thyroid problems.

Back 20+ years ago when I was diagnosed, by GP had my levels checked monthly until we hit the right combination and dosage. Every six months means you can be miserable for 5months.

It sounds like you are on the right track with demanding better more frequent care from your doctor. Heck, they don't need to "see" you every month - just schedule a blood draw and test. If OK - fine. If high/low - call in a new script. How hard can that be? Make sure they don't just do the TSH. They need to do T3 & T4 at the same time. Have they done a thyroid antibody test?
