Can anyone tell me where to find a good beginner hiking trail near Maricopa? For me and my dogs.

let's try this again, any good hiking trails nearby? has anyone hiked south mountain, what's that like and where's the best place to start?

There are no trails to just easily hike around Maricopa, any around usually require a few hours of hikeing and they are for moderate hikers.. South mountaiin is great a little of a drive but there are several trails easy and moderate and always alot of people around, they also have alot of activities for families especially during the summer they have alot of night walks and star gazing..

Try the national trail at south mountain. If you take 48th street north from Elliot, you'll run right into the park entrance.

check this out: http://www.blm.gov/az/outrec/rec.htm There are all kinds of trails around AZ, just depends on how far you are willing to go.

Is there hiking allowed just South West of Hidden Valley or North of the Sail port?

Hi, Coming in late to this conversation, but there are some dirt roads along the old irrigation ditches between Peters and Nall and Papago Road. Folks lope their horses out there and take dogs out for long line and free training. Flat roads, sometimes washed out but, great for beginner walking/hiking. Also, check out www.toddshikingguide.com and look at Table Top National Wilderness. Not as far at S Mountain, but much tougher hiking, not for beginners, and isolated, so be very careful and cautious.
