I agree that fishing in canals can be dangerous and people do fall in and drown in them every year. The only fences I have seen around the canals are the measures put in place to protect the control gates and valves.

Fishing in canals are not considered urban fisheries, please check the following link for complete rules on urban fishing. ( http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/regulations/07UrbanFishingProgam.pdf ) There are no lakes in Maricopa considered urban lakes. However there are rules for fishing in the parks in Maricopa (catch and release) and you must have a fishing license if over 14 years old to fish anywhere in Arizona.

I am glad you posted this, because I though I knew something about fishing and because I questioned what you were saying I discovered a little know fact. I posted some misinformation earlier and I apologize if I started or spread any rumor. I did not intent to mislead anyone reading this thread. But I found the law governing reservation waterways you may refer to Arizona Game and Fish Regulations online at the following link (http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/regulations/2007and2008FishingRegulations.pdf ) it states:

R12-4-117
Indian Reservations
A state license, tag, or permit is not required to hunt
or fish on any Indian reservation in this state. Wildlife
lawfully taken on an Indian reservation may be
transported or processed anywhere in the state if it
can be identified as to species and legality as provided
in A.R.S. § 17-309(A)(20). All wildlife transported is
subject to inspection under the provisions of A.R.S.
§ 17-211(E)(4).

I would not recommend fishing in a 'fishing hole' on the reservation. They are in fact aquaculture ponds where they breed and raise fish! Severe penalty for trespassing can occur

Hubby just got back from Woods Canyon on the rim. They caught 6 fish - all small trout. No one in the party caught the big ones released from the hatchery.

your going to have a great fish fry! Im hungry now.

I sent an email to both GRIC and AZ Fish/Game for clarification.

I _know_ when you go fishing up north - you need to purchase a special license from the Navaho/Apache tribes. The AZ licenses do not apply but the tribes do. I'll post the response I get.

I don't know - HE ate them. Actually him and our son - the endless pit ate them.
They did offer me some but being the kind person I am, I let them enjoy. They said they were very good

Here is the reply I received from AZ Fish/Game regarding canals. Still waiting for someone from GRIC. NOTE: The canals in our area are CAP canals.

Hello,

CAP canals are off limits to fishing, however SRP canals are legal to fish in . As far as fishing on any reservation property or land goes, you need to contact the tribal office and find out what they require. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

Thanks,

I think most of the canals here are CAP. There are SRP canals in the east valley. The ones I know about run along the border of Chandler and Mesa, between Gauadalupe and Elliot. Also we used to ride our bikes along one near Greenfield from Elliot south. GIANT fish in those, like Koi or something.
