This is the thread that I’ve been waiting for. There are a whole host of sites for reporting fishing conditions. Here are a few of the best that I have found and use.

http://www.azgfd.gov/artman/publish/cat_index_28.shtml (they also post the stocking schedule)
http://www.mexfish.com (this site opens a new window with every click : ( but is good for all of Mexico)
http://www.sportfishingreport.com (my favorite)

Good luck

There are many small lakes and ponds in the area. Some are on private land and some are on the Gila River Indian Reservation. Gila River has 2 very nice lakes very close to Maricopa but I am not sure if the general public can fish them. I have seen many natives fishing them and coming up with some very nice large mouth bass, crappie, and catfish. I have a local place but I would never tell. You can’t get in there right now anyway the water is too high in the tree line to cast, you would need a small boat to fish it. The best place to go right now is the lake just north of the UofA on Sacate Road. But like I said I'm not sure if it is legal with out having a Gila River tribal member with you.

***official stop by***

I have read and understood the posting on this thread and have nothing EVERYTHING TO ADD.

I also have been waiting for this thread. I now I can read the threads and see websites... I am a more hands on guy. I would love to hook up with some people that would like to share their fishing holes. I have no clue on which way to roll to go fishing.... But I am interested. My poles are just getting dusty in the garage.

I am from San Diego so I usually wouldgo deep sea fishing for my fishing fix. Now I am in river and lake country and I find myself at odds on where to go. I have read the Fish and Game site and other sites... Just doesn't seem the same.

Like I said.. I am more hands on.

Just doing it one day at a time. Change is good and it should be looked upon as an improvment! not a problem.

I would not recommend fishing in a 'fishing hole' on the reservation. They are in fact aquaculture ponds where they breed and raise fish! Severe penalty for trespassing can occur

Hubby just got back from Woods Canyon on the rim. They caught 6 fish - all small trout. No one in the party caught the big ones released from the hatchery.

I am not sure if the watering hole I mentioned on the reservation is the aquaculture pond you are speaking of. But I hear that they Rangers will confiscate your property including the vehicle you drove there in. Woods Canyon is probably the most popular spot in AZ to go trout fishing. That lake is stocked monthly and sometimes up to five times a month. Only boats with electric motors are allowed on that lake, due to it’s relative small size.

The closest big lake to Maricopa is Bartlett Lake, Saguaro Lake is about equal distance but has more boat traffic. Fishing is decent at both and Saguaro is also stocked with trout every now and then. In my opinion Bartlett has better fishing. Both of these lakes are about 1 ½ hours from Maricopa.

I am looking for a small jon boat so that I can get to my secret spot. If any one knows where to find one please let me know. Maybe I’ll bring you along.

The canals out here are loaded with fish too. My sons friends fish in the canals almost every day. I’m thinking that it is Central Arizona Project water, so it would be logical for fish to be in the canals. I have heard stories of carp over 10 lbs in these canals.

I’ll keep you in mind Robert if I find a boat. I keep checking out craigslist every day.

Remember a few things about fishing in canals...
They are dangerous!
They are fenced for a reason - ie NO TRESPASSING
They are subject to the rules for urban fishing
While Amur are catch and release only
Back to they are dangerous - people fall in and drown in them every year because they can't get out and are trapped at a gate.
