05/01/2008 5:28 PM Alert

We just got a letter from WM saying that they are increasing rate $12 a month because they are adding recycling to the program and by doing so they are cutting regular service to 1 day and adding 1 day for recycling per week.

And this is all because of the Board of directors for RED without conducting a poll to see what the rest of the homeowners want as some of us may want to stay to the regular 2 days a week and or maybe some homeowners can't afford the extra amount due to the economy or tight on a budget.

I believe each homeowner should be able to choose whether they want it by letting WM know what program they want since we pay for our bills unless the board wants to pay it for us as we need the 2 day a week reg trash service.  The last thing I want is another bill showing up at our house.

We just called WM and they said it was decided by the HOA Board and that if we don't like it that we need to talk to the board or get a petition going as they are going by what board told them.  Also the gal at WM told us that if we don't want the recycle than trash service is only 1 day a week but you are welcome to pay an additional $8 a month to have a extra trash can but still only get 1 day a week service.

My husband and I are not happy about this and are planning to fight this and in hopes a bunch of other people will join us to voice our opinion on this.  Why the change to be so drastic from the board without giving options for we should be able to choose the service we want.  It shouldn't be our way or the highway kind of feel.  We need to be happy living in our home and in our community.    also if the board wants recycle they can get it from Maricopa Disposal and plus I think they are cheaper as my neighbor has them and they get 1 day of recycle and 2 dyas from WM servicing them.

They are NOT adding $12. The letter states that the cost is $11.95 per month for BOTH pickups.

I do not need this service either and will have them come pick up the extra container after it arrives next week. The WM service rep said this would be OK. Side yard is narrow enought as it is

My husband and I are not happy with this recycle thing either. We have decided to put our blue barrel in the driveway of a vacant house. 6 of our neighbors are doing the same. I never heard about a meeting to discuss this recycle thing. Believe me I would have attended that meeting. The lady I talked to at wm said if I didn't want to recycle I need to cancel my trash service and take care of my own trash disposal. Communism is what this has become. Nobody got a say in this except our wonderful board of directors. Boycott the blue barrells!!

Where did the 12 increase come from?  I just moved here and it was 9.75 a month and when I called she said it was going to be 11:95 a month, with only one day of garbage and one of recycle.  that is the same as phx.  Where did the 12 a month increase come from?

I really want the trash picked up twice a week. The recycling can may get filled once a month. With all the restrictions on whats recycled and not I still have too much trash.

We recycle all the time and acutally our recycle bin is more full than our trash. We had Maricopa Disposal for years and then "BAM" get slammed in the face with WM having to give up MD after almost 5 years of service. MD "david" only charged $15 every 3 months which was a steal compared to WM "goliath" high price of pick up. I do remember a survey going out some time ago inregards to recycling and that was the last I heard until the HOA board sent out the mailing that I needed to get rid of MD service by June 1. If I had my choice I would like to support the local companies like MD in Maricopa instead of the BIG COMPANIES WITH THEIR BIG PRICES!!!! Let's support local services!!! Sign me up for the petition!!!!!!

people say to recycle to save the enviroment. how are we saving the enviroment by having the trash truck drive down a 4 block radius and only pick up 6 recycle bins? it does not make any sense to me.

If you choose not to recycle (I don't know why anyone would choose not to), you can always order a second gargabe bin. That has always been an option - you just need to ask.

As far as putting your new "blue bin" on a vacant driveway: don't you know that they keep record of which bins you have, and after you move you are responsible to return if. If not, you are responsible for the replacement cost? That is such an immature move for those that participated. Just call the company and express your intent to not participate and ask them to retrieve their bin.

And then there's Maricopa Disposal: Before RED, we lived in Maricopa Meadows and then Cobblestone. Both places we were forced to use MD, and I can tell you that their charge was NOT $15 every three months! That is a load of crap! They did bill every three months, and the total was just under $40. That is about $15 / month!! We also had a ton of problems with MD just deciding not to pick up our trash every once in a while, when the bin had been out since the night prior. They always just assumed that we didn't have it out there in time (and it was - we would watch them drive right by). Then, when we were moving to RED, they picked up our bins two weeks earlier than we had requested. It took them a week to return them, and then they let them sit there on the sidewalk for nearly a month after we had moved. That's what you get with a "small town local company"!!

Let's face it: recycling works and it's just crazy to waste so much when we can reuse it; and the "big companies with big prices" typically know what they're doing - that's how they became BIG!!! I would choose WM any day over MD......

It's so petty to complain about a whole $12 a month - what would we do without garbage companies pickiing up all of our CRAP... Not many people want to do it, but yet you all sit back and complain.

I'm sorry you think it sounds petty NEW2BLOG but I'm sorry I already paid my trash fees for the year which is over $100 a year and than they sent this letter out that made it kind of sound like we are paying additional and that even a lady at WM even agree that the letter made it sound like it's additional $12.
So if it sounds petty to you I'm sorry but yes if it but the economy it's pretty bad and than to pay additional amount to our trash is bad but that is not my only complaint, as I don't like that we didn't get any kind of notice from the board about it as we didn't receive anything about it, and no I'm paying additional $8.00 for a second trash bin.
Plus if it is or was $12, I don't think I would be the only person complaining about it here in RED.

But if oyu think it sounds petty you can come pay ours if you would like.

Also in replys to new2blog when we had MD for a few months they only charged us $5.00 a month for just recycling but we couldn't fill the bin up enough to even use it. And my neighbors jave had Md for along time for recycle until this new WM change they were only paying $5 for it so yes the only poster was paying $15 every 3 months.
Maybe it was just under $40 for you because you had both trash and recycle with them?????

Based on my extensive research, Waste Management's waste/recycling rates in Maricopa are the lowest in the State of Arizona. For example, the City of Tempe charges $18.11 per month and the City of Phoenix charges over $25 per month.

Every major City in Arizona has a 1 day per week recycling/1 day per week refuse pick-up service.

The only restriction to your new residential recycling program, as compared to other Arizona cities, is the exclusion of glass. Not all cities accept glass due to the high cost of transporting it out of State. Most likely, this is the reason your new recycling service is so low in cost.

jettasmom,

You can place the following items in your new residential curbside recycling bin:

Newspaper, office paper, junk mail, magazines, phone books, cardboard, chipboard (e.g. cereal boxes w/o the plastic liners), #1 & #2 plastic bottles w/o lids (FYI: the number is on the bottom of the plastic bottle), steel cans, and aluminum cans. All other items are prohibited.

You can recycle your glass bottles & jars at your local Recycling Association of Maricopa facility on Saturdays (520-568-9428). Remember, do not put your plastic bags in the recycling bin. Plastic bags can be re-used or recycled at  your grocery store.

The new one time per week trash pick up is a failure. I just signed a petition concerning it this weekend. Hopefully it will be changed soon. I had not really thought of it before but it makes sense what the guy told me. There are alot more flies in the community then we ever had before.

This is a no brainer............Lets go back to two trash pick up's per week. Its not worth our health!
