Alert | Posted By bethesolution on 05/09/2008 4:31 PM The only restriction your new recycling program has -- in comparison with some of the other Arizona residential curbside recycling programs -- is the exclusion of glass bottles and jars. Many Arizona communities do not accept glass for recycling due to the transportation and processing costs. I wasn't comparing it to any other recycling program, I was comparing it to what we had and what the board is forcing on us. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | Jason, your new recycling service may cost a few dollars more, but you are getting more for less. Instead of having to drive to a recycling facility and sort your trash, you are paying WM the cost of doing that for you -- curbside. In addition, you are getting a semi-annual bulk trash pick-up service. Most of the major cities in Arizona provide this level of service to their residents. RED residents pay the least amount for this service than any other City in Arizona that I have researched.

Alert | Alright I have to admit that I was bothered by the letter stating that they are changing the way garbage is picked up and called them to complain. BUT within the last week of looking around my house and making an effort to recycle more I have almost filled my recycling container. There is so much that they recycle and it is a shame to see all of you complaining about this. Sure it is a pain in the butt to sort through, and it may cost more. Wouldnt you rather try to help cut down on the garbage to save the environment for your children/grandchildren. Yes it would have been nice to pick an option, but really is it that big of a deal? Please stop wasting your time here on the forum complaining and actually try to recycle.

Alert | Posted By bethesolution on 05/11/2008 8:58 AM Jason, your new recycling service may cost a few dollars more, but you are getting more for less. Instead of having to drive to a recycling facility Never had to drive to one before, because we didn't have enough to make it worthwhile. The most we have to recycle is aluminum cans, but we take those to a recycling facility that pays us for them, when we are already planning on going near it. and sort your trash, you are paying WM the cost of doing that for you -- curbside. Huh? Now we have to sort our trash into a tiny recycling pile. How is that helping us? In addition, you are getting a semi-annual bulk trash pick-up service. That has nothing to do with the recycling service. We had that already in March, so as of the time the recycling program was implemented, we began receiving less service for more money. Most of the major cities in Arizona provide this level of service to their residents. RED residents pay the least amount for this service than any other City in Arizona that I have researched. Again, I'm not comparing our service to other cities/communities. I'm also a little skeptical of the claim that the service in every other city is more expensive. I used to live in Phoenix, and the trash and recycling service was cheaper and had two trash pickup days and one recycling pickup day. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Jason, does your household ever use/discard plastic bottles, steel cans, cardboard boxes, newspaper, office paper, junk-mail, magazines, and/or phonebooks? Again, I'm not comparing our service to other cities/communities. I'm also a little skeptical of the claim that the service in every other city is more expensive. I used to live in Phoenix, and the trash and recycling service was cheaper and had two trash pickup days and one recycling pickup day. In the City of Phoenix, some residents have alleyways where they share a 300 or 440 gallon container with twice per week trash removal. Those residents are also provided with a recycling container for their curb. You most likely lived in a neighborhood with an alleyway (or it has been several years since you lived in the City of Phoenix). Neighborhoods that don't have alleyways, have a curbside service for trash & recycling -- one day per week pick-up for trash and one day per week pick-up for recycling (source: City of Phoenix Code Article IV Solid Waste Recycling Sec. 27-25). Whether City of Phoenix residents have an alleyway or not, The cost for either service is $25.45 per month per "resident unit" (source: City of Phoenix Code Article VII Solid Waste Fees Sec. 27-98 Level of Solid Waste Fees; no exceptions).

Alert | | I think recycling is needed, I was previously using Maricopa Disposal. I am surprise to see the amount of cardboard still in garbage cans, that is what the recycling bin is for. If you put the cardboard & other recyclables in the recycling bin your garbage would not be overflowing, think about it! | | I'm free from all prejudice, I hate everyone equally!

Alert | Someone had stated to throw whatever in the recycle container becuase no one looks. That is so far from the truth. There are people who wll come out and randomly look inside to make sure you are putting the appropriate things in it. You will get a warning or two and then a fine. So do follow the list. I was so excited to get this service. I couldn't wait to receive my container and I am surprised not to hear more positive feedback here especially with everyone trying to Go Green. Yes there is one less trash day but with the recycling I only need one now. I have cut my trash in half. Most eveything I use can go in that container. Glass jars, milk jugs, newspaper, magazines, water/soda bottles and so much more. It is a great thing! I have a trash can in my garage outside the door so I just have to open the door and throw everything in. When it is full it goes to it's big green container.

Alert | Thank you Brandelyn and to the others that have responded with positive "green" messages about RED's new curbside recycling program. Please remember to bring your glass bottles & jars directly to the Recycling Association of Maricopa for recycling -- Waste Management does not yet accept glass for recycling via this new program. For more information -- hours of operations, directions, etc. -- call 520-568-9428.

Alert | Jason, does your household ever use/discard plastic bottles, steel cans, cardboard boxes, newspaper, office paper, junk-mail, magazines, and/or phonebooks? Ever? Yes. Frequently? Eh... I'm not saying we don't use it, but the chief complaint is that we have lost trash service and are paying more. I don't understand what is so hard to understand about that. For example. I looked at an Arizona Tea jug just the other day. Can't recycle it because it has the wrong number on the bottom. Plastic wrapping around abox? nope, can't put that through either. | | Joined: Jul 2005

Alert | | I am thrilled about the recycled trash idea, however, I do not like that they do not take glass or plastic. Those are items that should be recycled too. I have more glass items then newspapers or cardboard boxes than anything else so it really doesn't pay for me. I have seven days of newspapers, one gallon milk bottle and hardly any cardboard boxes unless someone sends me something from home. It is cheaper for me to go to one of the sites and drop off those items. If they are going to charge us more for their services they should rethink about accepting the items that most of us dispose of that are recycleable.
