05/01/2008 5:12 PM Alert

We received notification by mail yesterday that affected May 12, Waste Management is going to offer recycle trash pick up on Fridays (no more regular trash pickup on Friday it seems). Plus, we get to pay extra for this. It also seems that we have no choice.

Anyone else find this annoying? Regular trash pick up only one day a week seems scant. Sigh. My brother back in NY has garbage pick up three days a week and he can put out as much trash as he likes, even big items, whereas, heaven forbid a piece of garbage falls out of the one container I am allowed to put out and the trash guy just leaves it there!

That's funny I didn't see your thread until after I just posted mine about the same garbage that the HOA board decided on and we are not happy about it.  For the homeowners should be able to decide whether they want Program A (old service) or Program B (new service).  Not what the BOARD WANTS.

We just talked to a gal at WM and she said there is nothing that they can and that we have to take up to the board or do a petition.  Plus if we don't want the recycle service than I think WM needs to submit  half of our money back.

I think the board should have conducted a poll about it since every homeowner pays theri own bills and maybe there are some homeowners who can't afford  another bill to show up.

I think this wrong and needs to be worked out and not have the service start on May 12.  Also if you want a 2nd trash can to help the 1 day a week of service than it's a additional $8 a month.

I agree with the both of you. I just received the letter and immediately called the number. For those that have not received the letter as of yet the # is 602-268-2222 for waste management. However they mention its not their choice, but the choice of the H.O.A. The way they have arranged the new pick up is 1 regular trash, and 1 recycle per week. Their also tagging on $12. per month extra for the service. I have called several residents in the area and they all agreed that adding a recycle day is fine for them, but to add an additional fee on top of reducing trash days a week is not. By the way waste management did mentioned that you may add an additional trash bin for $8. per month on top of the $12. Now my neighbors pay $5. a month for recycling through Maricopa disposal. I guess I fail to understand the new plan being more beneficial to the residents. I also strongly agree with azgreyhoundz that the sudden change without respectively acknowledging the community with a poll is outrageous.

This is totally outrageous! As it is I only need 1 pickup every 2 weeks and now they are adding on 12 dollars? Is the HOA smoking crack or something? I will fight this tooth and nail. I don't like the fact that tree huggin liberals try to impose on me their pet projects. If they want to go off and save the planet go do it somewhere else, not at my expense. Prepare for the fight!

They are NOT adding $12. The letter states that the cost is $11.95 per month for BOTH pickups. I do not need this service either and will have them come pick up the extra container after it arrives next week. The WM service rep said this would be OK. Side yard is narrow enought as it is.

I just talked to a gal at WM and she said they are gonna prorate it on what we already paid.
But still we just paid $113 for the year and with the $12.00 a month fee which will equal to $120 a month which yeah that is a $7 difference now but years to come it will be a $120 bill a year.

What I don't like is that we are gonna miss having the 2nd day of trash pickup that our household needs as we tried the recycle thing before and it takes us 3 weeks to fill it up.
The other thing I don't like is that the board never sent out a letter to let people know what the meeting is gonna be about and would like to hear from the homeowners, and plus the board doesn't give homeowners an option to let WM know if they want to stick to Option A or B kind of like with the cable company to where you can pick to having basic cable or upgrade it.
Also the gal at WM checked and the HOA didn't have the option for extra trash bin and so if you want it you need to pay $8 a month.

Ever since HOA companies got changed to Rossmar, I have not been impressed and wish we could go back to the other company. For one look at all the houses around with weeds and some houses have people in them and some don't but they are worried about my neighbor's trash can out past the deadline or their cars parked overnight for one night and they get tagged for it by the HOA.

Every major City in Arizona has one day per week trash and one day per week recycling (Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Tempe, Tucson, etc.). They pay between $18.11 (Tempe) and $25 (Phoenix) per month for the same service that you are paying only $11.95 per month. Waste Management will also be offering in that rate a semi-annual bulk trash pick-up service.

Now that Rancho El Dorado will be getting curbside recycling service, 90% of the City of Maricopa will have the same curbside recycling service as you with one day trash and one day recycling collection per week.

I don't like it at all. We also need the 2 day trash pick up.

Just put your trash in the recycle bin, they sort it out.  They don't look inside before they dump them.

Reduce, recycle, reuse is the Maricopa mantra for waste moderation. The community recycling program is steadily improving and expanding under the direction of the HOA's and Waste Management. I take my recyclables out to the Recycle Center on McDavid Road every Saturday, and it is my understanding that the McDavid operation will continue to receive recyclable glass items and larger items. I appreciate the fact that the HOA's and WM are continuously identifying opportunities for sustainability in our communities. I partcularly like the curb service,  which can help me to save on gas.

You would be surprised how much of your "garbage" is recyclable.

Americans are truly a "disposable" society. 80% of what the average American disposes, could (should) be recycled.

The board did poll everyone in RED about if they want recycling or not. I got the poll in the mail a few months ago. I returned it saying that I do want recycling. They didn't do this willy nilly, they have public meetings all the time about this kind of stuff.
I have no problem with trash pickup once a week. We barely ever have more than a bag or two. You'll probably also find that a lot of what you're throwing away can be recycled anyway.

My personal favorite part of the letter about delivering the recycling bins was the part where they put to cancel your service if you use any other company! I dont think that they should be allowed to force you to cancel your service with other companies it should be up to the HOA to do that not WM!The whole thing stinks. I always have my trash can full on both days.

How is it legal for them to exclude any other recycling companies? We're talking about public streets here.

It is amazing to me that people do not, will not, recycle! It is really not that complicated or a hassle. You just need to set up a good system and make it a habit for your family. Your trash will be cut down DRAMATICALLY if you use the recycle can correctly.
Most of us here have children, many of us young children...what are we teaching our children by being such a disposable, irresponsible society?

Go ahead...blast, flame away!!! But just maybe when someone is unable to make the responsible choice, the choice should be made for them!!

With the restrictions that they have put, most of our trash isn't recyclable. It has nothing to do with unwillingness to recycle, it has to do with the whole deal. Essentially we're paying more for less service.

The only restriction your new recycling program has -- in comparison with some of the other Arizona residential curbside recycling programs --  is the exclusion of glass bottles and jars.  Many Arizona communities do not accept glass for recycling due to the transportation and processing costs.

You can take your glass bottles and jars to your local Recycling Association of Maricopa on Saturdays. Call 520-568-9428 for more info and directions.

You can't legislate behavior. This is still a democratic country and people are going to do things and have different beliefs than you are.

I for one do not like recycling dictated to me. Some of us are content to save a little money and drive our stuff to the recycling center. And others of us prefer to use a different recycling company to pick up our stuff. And others don't want to participate in recycling.

Just do your thing and let others do theirs.
