Still to this day Flores has not done anything to put adequate processes in place to handle another incident!

Unless more speak out nothing will change!

We want answers and we want action! It's time for the board and Flores to step up!

Desert Newbie pretty much has the story. My son was with the boy asked to hold the gun. He knew the boy only from the school bus and did not associate with him.

As for the suspensions, I was told the boy who brought the gun will not be returning, but the others will. For the record, the other two boys involved in turning in the gun returned to school the following Monday and never had another issue. I am just not going to take that risk. I understand that these things happen in other places, but this one hit too close to home. I also don't think in another district a child who turns in a gun brought to school for a known gang related incident would be allowed to return to class after the lockdown. Oh, and I was not notified of the incident until 1PM when I was contacted by a counselor at school because he came back to the office at lunch feeling threatened by friends of the gun kid. My children deserve more!

I brought this up detailing what I heard (Rumor) about the kids right after the incident and them coming back to school... As usual my sources proved correct.

Unfortunately Flores has kept this under raps to "protect" those individuals involved...What about the innocent children of the community?

They spent the time enforcing an on the spot dress code they said we make a huge difference in spotting gang members...Then over the summer apparently the color issue really isn't that big a deal as long as the uniforms meet the school criteria.

Flores lives by the "Lets throw something at the wall" mentality until the more reasonable teachers and Administrators come up with a better plan.

Flores is a reactive Superintendent, he refuses to look out for the Icebergs, and is content with plugging the holes after the ship strikes them.

The board appears in most cases to be the deckhands who's job is to look for the icebergs, to sound the bell and listen for echoes of potential problems. Unfortunately most of them are in a fog, and can be found sitting in a life boat with their captain!

Wow, I have a life for a few days and the post goes crazy! I have decided to try not to "play" Phatom's game, as this person continues to tell so many incredible lies and makes assumptions as well. The interesting part is that, I really am not a supporter of any one person... but the truth. I stooped as low as Phantom when bringing to light what a former district employee had openly shared with me. I did not mean to have her name published. Now that I see the continued personal attacks Phantom has set forth, I do feel sorry for these individual, truth or lie, it must hurt to be personally attacked in such a public way.

I chose to put my energy into improvements.... I hope more can do the same.

Anyway, I read in another thread about the wonderful things a youth type group who is affiliated with the city is doing to provide school supplies. I hope someone affiliated with them might catch this. If not, I will call later in the week. I know that one of the Phoenix news stations has Silent Witness and a reward. I wonder if there is a way to set that up for students. It would be great to get community business owners to donate small items or gift cards as rewards for the brave students who step up. I just don't know how Silent Witness gets the reward to the persone providing the information. I just figured that maybe on of the kids in this group might have an idea about how to relate to these students.

Anyone with any other ideas?

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Parents just need to be involved. I attended an inner city school district in Michigan for middle and high school and I was surrounded by gang members, but we were educated at school about the situation (even had an ex gang member from prison come to speak to our school-to not join a gang) and my mother was very involved in my schooling. I was never afraid to go to school, but I always knew that gangs were there. If I didn't get involved I had nothing to worry about... ..unlike one of my classmates who was in a gang, who was shot on the street. Parents and teachers need to acknowledge gangs and educate kids on the history of gangs and what they do, otherwise those gangs are going to be the ones teaching our kids, not us... My experience growing up helped me become a great teacher and hopefully I can use my knowledge while working at Maricopa Wells.
