To say that the school district must be fine because your children are doing well is lunacy.  A child doing well in an under-performing school district is likely not prepared to students who did well in excelling districts when those two students meet in college.  If you compare the curriculum in Maricopa with curriculum from other schools, MUSD does not come as close to meeting state standards.  This is apparent by their consistently low AIMS scores.  It's hard to pinpoint the reason for low AIMS scores.  It could be the administration, teachers who aren't in touch with the state standards, lack of supplies, or students who ate Twinkies for breakfast the day of the test.  It is almost impossible to lay blame on one particular individual.  However, when a district consistently performs poorly, the blame is somewhere.  I understand there has been improvement, but AIMS scores in Maricopa look nothing like they look in Kyrene and other charter schools in the Ahwatukee area.  Until that improves, the district will continue to lose students to more competitive districts.

That's okay, Urban Cowgirl - your message came through loud and clear. Our son is at Milenio also - we love it! Their moto is true - you can't help but catch the Milenio passion for education.

As a kid who grew up in the Tempe/Kyrene school district I have to laugh.  We or our parents went through the same "stuff" that MUSD is going through, it is called growing pains.  As a kid, I remember hearing about the schools being overcrowded and all the other complaints.  Kyrene is what it is because it has had the time to GROW UP.  Try 20 plus years.  I have to agree Maricopa has come a long way in a short time.

I myself was on the band wagon to send my little ones to school in the Kyrene school district until I was reminded by some very wise people that Kyrene was no better the MUSD back in the day, the difference is Kyrene has had the time to grow up and progress to what they are today.  Of course they are courting our children and families, because now they have wonderful schools and need the head count.

I am not bashing anyones decision on choice of schools.  I think all our common denominators here are what works best and is best for our children.  It is great we have the choice to choose where we send our kids!!

Our children will probably wrestle with the same tough decisions with our grandchildren and we will tell them to bus them to Maricopa, they have one heck of a school district with no overcrowding, spectacular teachers, and cutting edge technology!!!  (Not to mention they will be close to Grandma and Grandpa's house)  Haha....LOL

All kidding aside, it will always be a debate but we are talking about our kids.  Best wishes to you all in your school choices.  I truly have confidence in all of them Kyrene, Maricopa, and Legacy.  Hopefully we will all find the "right fit" for our children.

Kudos chevyguy you have some great points!!

chevyguy, you sound like a great person. I hope that my children do as well with their education as you have. There's probably way too much to post here about the problems that we found with MUSD but it definitely wasn't with the teachers. The leadership of the district (the superintendent and governing board) showed us that their agenda in no way includes providing a quality education for my children. And they were blatant about saying that they had no intention of changing their agenda or taking input. I'm anxiously awaiting the school board elections. Yes, things will improve as changes occur at that level but I'm not going to use "convenience" as an excuse not to get my children the best education available to them. My children are honor students and I'm going to continue to do my part to seek out the best for them.

I definitely suggest that you attend a few (at first the problems aren't so apparent) school board meetings or listen to the mp3 recordings available on the district website. If you see an area of concern address it and see how far that gets you.

Its like either the school is too hard and rigid (i.e. Legacy) or too easy (MUSD) or just right (Kyrene). I feel like I am having to make school decisions every year! We have been here since 2006 and its making me nutso! I appreciate reading everyone's thoughts on the matter and I have offered some of my own, it really just makes me think about what questions to ask, what to look for etc... We came from a private school back home and really had NO intention of putting them in any of the local public schools there. We loved our school and I think may be still mourning that loss. So, these choices are difficult and like I said, every year, I feel like I am back at the first square!

My daughter is going to start Kindergarten next fall and I've started looking into elementary schools.  I know for a fact that she won't be going to MUSD but a school in Kyrene.  Like some of the other posts, I am not going to send my kids to MUSD when I have the option of sending them to a much better school district.  In addition, we would never have bought in Maricopa if we didn't have access to that district.

I'm thinking of sending her either to Sierra or Summit in the Kyrene district.  Does anyone send (or have sent) their kids to one of those schools and if so how are they?

Chevyguy,
Your right, there is no right or wrong answer. My kids were in MUSD and now go to Kyrene. I know that MUSD has some fabulous teachers and some not so good ones, but that is true about most schools. I also heard from the principal at MWMS that she used to be at Kyrene when it was a new and struggling school district. My main problem with MUSD was they seemed to be more focused on teaching the AIMS test and making their students records "look" good. What I mean by that is, whenever my kids would take a test and not do real good on it they would be given sometimes up to 20 very easy extra credit questions to bring their grade up. My son actually brought a 120% home on a spelling test, and on another test he should have had a "C" but it was brought up to an "A" by getting a bunch of non-related extra credit questions correct. My problem with that is, it is difficult to judge your childs progress and help with his/her difficulties. In Kyrene, my kids are being actually educated on subjects, not just educated on how to pass a test at the end of the year. I understand MUSD is getting better and making progress and I think that is great but my kids dont have the time to wait as they approach high school.

Just my 2 cents worth.....

How hard is it to get your child into the Kyrene School District? We were in Chandler for 3 years and then out here in MUSD for 1 year. I have found that I do not like MUSD and I was just wondering if 1 year in MUSD would have put my son in a bad position for Kyrene? I know Chandler was great and I thought I would try my 'home town' school but I think they have fallen short out here in MUSD.

It is actually very easy. It is open enrollment and they are taking applications now. Go to their website and register your child. It is first-come first-served, if there is an opening, they're in. It fills up fast though. I would register online asap and then call the school and ask how it looks. It is very easy you dont have to do anything special or unusual to get permission, just register (as long as they are still accepting applications) like I said it is first-come.

I am all for better schools.  But, does it really make sense to send your kids up the '347 Speedway of Death' in a bus with no seat belts?

Seems to me that all the bus accidents happen in Maricopa with the MUSD buses.

dont use scare tactics, unless you are a right winger hehe. nothing has happened on KSD buses and they have been transporting kids for 3 yrs now same as MUSD and like alanf says its the MUSD buses that have had accidents. i for one wont be scared into sending the kids to MUSD, heck a parent can get into an accident on JWP or smith enke or honeycutt etc&kill themselves and their kids so that logic is retarded

The law requires you to 'buckle up' yourself and kids in your car, yet the school bus is SEAT BELT FREE, except for the driver.

Why does the driver have a seat belt, but the kids don't?

I am not saying anything bad about any particular school district, as none of them have seat belts.

How much could seat belts add to the cost of a bus?

Everyone always says 'its for the kids', well seat belts should be FOR THE KIDS TOO.
