03/06/2008 11:48 AM Alert

Wednesday, March 5, My son's custom made, extremely expensive skateboard was stolen from Maricopa Wells Middle School after school.  The board is black on top, black on the bottom with a picture of the Chuckie doll from the movie "Child's Play".  It says "Baker" on one end and "Jim Greco" on the other end. It has black and white axles / "trucks" on it with the "Thunder" emblem and had white "Baker" brand wheels on it. This was a birthday present from me to my son and he hasn't even had it a week. The third time he rode it to school, it was stolen.  If your child has come home with a board like this, PLEASE email me or perhaps return it annonymously to Maricopa Wells front office.  I don't care who took it, we just want it back!!!!

I'm just curious...not bagging on you and your son. I know that many schools have lockup areas for bikes...what do the kids do with skateboards? I can't imagine they'd be allowed to carry thgem to class. Is there someplace to secure them? I've just never considered it before and I'm curious.

That stinks, I hope you get the skateboard back. Kids should be allowed to bring their boards to class, it's not like they are gonna ride them around the room.......

Last year the kids were told to keep them at the front desk in the front office.  Things still came up missing.

My son had his ipod stolen last week out of his backpack while he went to the bathroom.  I know.....it should leave it at home, but  he started taking it so he could listen while he was running in track.  Things always happen when a substitute is there.

It's a sad world we live in.  I hope you get your skateboard.  Unfortunately most parents don't notice their kids "new stuff".  My son's ipod has his name on the screen when it's turned on but I am sure that can be changed.

Didn't mean to hijack....I just know how frustrating it is....hope you get it back!

Yes there is a place for the skateboards to be locked up...they have a 2 large plastic bins with lids and the kids all put their skateboards in there when they arrive at school then after the first bell rings, someone who considers themself "security" will go out and lock the bins and the bike area.  After school, shortly BEFORE the last bell rings, someone will unlock everything and it seems to me to be a first come first served type thing. Thats what happened to my son's board...someone liked his better and got there first, grabbed it, and ran. I can't even get a response from the school even after standing in the office for 45 minutes this am...no one had time to talk with me, so they had me fill out a paper describing the problem, why I was there,  who was involved, and my name and phone number.  I WILL be back up there after school today, and tomorrow and the next day......

I can not, for the life of me, figure out why these children can't have lockers. They have to carry everything they have, all day long, on their backs in backpacks. Calculators, Glasses, Cell Phones, Ipods, a snack, 5-7 notebooks, 5-7 folders, projects, agendas, jackets when its cold out...etc.....and these same children are expected to participate in P.E. Where do they change into their gym clothes? IN A BATHROOM!! Are our children afforded the oppurtunity to wash their pre-teen stinky little armpits after gym- only if they can do it in a bathroom sink!! Better yet, while participating in outdoor gym class, can anyone guess where the children put their belongings? If anyone guessed that they are made to bring their stuff with em' and toss it on the grass/dirt then your correct!! Again during this time their things are out of their possesion and can be stolen at any moment. ( and have been)The reason the school will not provide lockers you ask? The reason I was given is by providing lockers, they would be providing SOME kids with a place to possibly store weapons or drugs. But for the other 600 students...what about them?????

First off, if my kid had an expensive skateboard and the only place to "lock" it during the day was a box that anyone/everyone had access to I wouldn't let my kid take the skateboard to school.

Secondly, lockers were taken out of schools several years back because of drugs, alcohol, weapons and vandalisim/theft. With the big outcry by parents against the school searching lockers as "invasion of privacy", not to mention law suits over it and the huge cost of replacing vandalized lockers not having them has probably saved the schools a great deal of money. Ya can't have it both ways!

Actually, Fait, we just got to AZ from Wisconsin and the kids had lockers there. This "no locker" policy is new to us.  And I suppose your correct in the idea of not letting a child take an expensive item to school, that being said, then perhaps they should purchase locks for their backpacks......that way the dirty little theives won't be able to steal basic school supplies right out of other students backpacks.  That is also happening frequently. Maybe some parents need to teach their kids not to steal, cheat, lie, fight, use drugs etc......after all shame on me for buying my son something so nice and allowing him to use it to get to school.

Anyway... parents out there that have kids that you know ride skateboards.....could you please take a second or two and check your kids room out or the garage or where ever they would keep their skateboards PLEASE?????  Like I said before, I don't care who has it or why, we just want it back. Its almost impossible to explain the injustices of the world to a kid who's heart is broken because someone stole something from him that he truly cherished.

Lockers are property of the school and so to look inside them should not be an invasion of privacy. Simply have the parents sign a document saying so or let their child carry their stuff around. I would think the invasion of privacy excuse would work better when searching a student's privately owned backpack. Drugs - well lets have one of Maricopa's finest with four legs visit on a regular basis. Weapons on one's person are more dangerous than weapons in a locker. Arizona schools are "outdoor" schools and rarely have "internal" hallways. This is not the norm for the rest of the country. "Outdoor" lockers are a big reason there is a vandalism problem. I would think the simple truth is that lockers are costly and the schools put the funds elsewhere.

Tell your kid that he shouldn't take anything to school that he won't miss when its stolen.

Let him know that some kids have losers for parents and they haven't been taught the difference between right and wrong or that graffitti is bad.

Let us know if you find it....I truly hope you do. I get tired of being told by others that I am irresponsible for letting my kids take things to school. That I should know it will get stolen. What kind of world do we live in? Even if that is the reality, I think it's sad that anyone's reaction to the parent is that they should have known better. As if the victim brought it on himself. The school has a place set aside for skateboards so I would have felt comfortable sending my son with one. If the school isn't going to take responsibility and have a safe place for it then they need to say so, but when the school offers a place to lock it up then they should take responsibility. No different from the bike rack. Whatever happen to the person responsible taking responsibility? So sorry, I hate when kids have to learn that we should just not trust others. What kind of life lesson is that?

pms.

It truly is a sad and unwarranted experience your son (at no fault of yours or his has had to face....)

I had a similar situation years ago and while it may be of no comfort to your son right now...I explained to my child..sometimes children that take things that don't belong to them is because they think it will replace the attention..affection and love that is missing in their lives...

I will certainly post it IF we ever get it back.....I will be putting up fliers around Alterra with a picture of the skateboard and the info that it is stolen!  If someone had to STEAL a skateboard,  maybe their family doesn't have a computer either.  Even if I never see that skateboard again....I want the person who took it to sweat, and their parent(s) to know their kid took something that doesn't belong to them!!!

Not to be a jerk, but how expensive was it? I'm familiar with skateboards and am just curious.

True, if kids an be allowed to have those Heelie shoes, than boards should be allowed in class.
