Don't have any kids in school, am curious why they only go to school half day on Wed?

Seems like they have lots of time off during the year. They even get 2 weeks at Christmas. Plenty of off time to get in trouble. IMO

The other half is for teachers time / meetings.

They do the half-days each week to avoid a full day off other places. 2 weeks off at Christmas is pretty standard, I had that way back in the day too.

And as far as getting in trouble, that's not the school's issue. that's a parenting issue

I know in the East Valley it is standard to have half day Wednesdays until Middle School.

It's not truely a half day either. Any day that the school serves lunch is considered a full day by the state. So the time counts towards their total TOT (time on task). If they took a full day off they would have to make that up some where, cutting breaks shorter or making the school year longer.

We came from Tempe where their half day off was always Friday. That day worked out much better for us as it was easier for one of us to get off work early on a Friday. Wednesdays are much harder and has been a problem for us. We did get to vote on it at MES last spring, but my vote lost, I guess. We've been working it out, though.

I'm from WA where kids go to school all day every day, with occasional in service days (maybe 2 per year). Just one more reason why AZ's schools rate among the lowest in the country!

true. on wednesdays, it's only 2 hours less. so 5 hours instead of 7. When I was in kindergarten, it was called "1/2 day" and I went for 2 1/2 hours (12pm to 2:30pm)

My vote lost as well. Wednesday's 1/2 days are, IMO too much. An occasional day or an accasional 1/2 day makes much more sense than every Wednesday. I'm lucky, I can work my work schedule around it ... but what if I couldn't? I'm sure there are parents who can't .... I know someone who said "the only ones who would reasonably vote a 1/2 day one a week is a kid!!!" I'm no fan of it.

It's a Early Release, not half day. The teachers receive a lot of training during these days. So It really should benefit the schools, not make them bad as stated above.

Sorry, this makes me laugh!
Don't most training seminars last a whole day or a couple full days? What wonderful training are these teachers getting? And is all of this training they are supposedly getting doing any good? LOL!

This is exactly right. Because most kids don't know any better.

I won't get a survey; time goes by way too fast and I don't have children who go to school here. If I did though, I would be furious that every Wednesday the district took that time away from my children when they should be learning. The schools out here simply aren't good enough to be able to justify a decision like that and every parent who knows any better should be irate and fighting to have it changed. Along with a list of other things.

And that poop about teachers having to attend seminars during that time... is that really what they are telling people?!!

In most other states they don't have the "two hours off" every Wednesday they have "teacher in service days" throughout the year and they are FULL days. It ends up to be a wash at the end of the year. It is so the teachers can prepare for lessons or go to training if needed. It is nation wide, how they choose to use it, whole day, half day, is up to them but the time frame is standard and has nothing to do with the low test score AZ has.

I would love to see the people complain in other states when their kids had the WHOLE DAY OFF so teachers can get more training! Especially when their kids don't even go to school here, man that's rich!
