Recently I have been looking into home schooling as an alternative to public education. I know I am not the only one. Does anyone, or can anyone, lend some advice or observations on the subject?

In the past I used the AZVA.org ---k12 program. www.k12.com. I used it for my 3rd grader--it is considered a charter school. They send you everything you will need and it is VERY user friendly. My child really liked it--I liked it, my husband who wasnt really sure if he thought it was a good idea for me and my son liked it! The teacher workbooks walk you thru every step and you have a real teacher assigned to your child who you can reach anytime. If you have any questions and want to PM me feel free.

I agree with AZVA, K12. I schooled my oldest son with this program. The program provides you with everything you need and all the guidance you can ask for! It is so much easier than traditional homeschooling where you have to locate all of your own curriculum. Oh, and did I mention, it is FREE!

I use AZVA for both my 6th grader and 2nd grader. They love it, I love it. It is a wonderful program.

There are local support groups for it as well as several field trip options every month. This month we are going to the State Fair for FREE. Next month we are attending the play Charlottes Web. There is a yahoo group of Arizona parents for 'from the trenches' advice. There is a PE coach that travels around to different parks and organizes sports programs. The entire program is first rate. I'd love to answer any questions you have, PM me and I will get you my contact information.

Good luck with your choice.

For virtual charter schools like AZVA there is also Connections Academy and Arizona Distance Learning (I used this my first year and am much happier with AZVA).

Homeschooling has been the greatest decision that we have made for our children. It is certainly a difficult decision to make as it seems like the great unknown. However, there are many options that minimize the work required by the parent. You can use a virtual charter school, you can purchase a complete curriculum program, or you can choose an eclectic approach and build your own curriculum and make your own schedule.

I have two children in AZVA and two with whom I use the eclectic approach. I enjoy the K12 program offered by AZVA, but not the new changes in the school itself. I am considering switching to a new curriculum for everyone, The Robinson Curriculum, and will know more when I get it in the mail this week.

There is a group specific for virtual schools at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MaricopaVirtualHomeschool.

There is another group for all homeschooling methods at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/maricopahomeschoolsupport

I'd be interested in discussing this with you at length should you have any questions.
