So we get these strict dress codes prior to the start of school. I go out and buy all new clothes and shoes, so my daughter could abide by the rules. I pick my daughter up from school everyday and see so many kids that are not fallowing the uniform rules. For example, kids having on open toed shoes, kids with long sleeve multi-colored shirts on under their collard shirts. There’s a kid that wears the same GREEN pants to school everyday. Kids with zip up hoodies on (in class), I saw one kid yesterday come out of school with this basketball type outfit on, absolutely nothing about it was dress code related. If these kids are getting away with wearing clothes other then the specified uniform... why can’t my child where what ever she wants? I just don’t understand why have a dress code if you are not going to enforce it?

So maricopamother, have you addressed these same very valid points with the administrator that over sees the campus involved? It seems to me that would be the starting point to 'fix' these concerns, not this forum. If you have already done so, mea culpa.

It seems to me that this forum would be useless according to you then. I'm pretty sure she's just voicing an opinion. Maybe some of the questions she posed were rhetorical. I too have witnessed the dress code not being enforced. I wonder why the staff doesn’t have to abide by the same dress code. I personally think the dress code is ridiculous. I can understand some of the rules, but definitely not all of them. Best thing to do is discuss this issue with the principal, and if you get no results, then start to relax on your child’s dress code too. Bona Fortuna!!
(See I’m smart too).

Not only should you address this situation with the administration, but donate outgrown clothes that fit the dresscode to the school nurse so those that are referred for violation can change into something else. Maybe those kids are being punished, but you are unaware of it? Unfortunately, sometimes it's easier for parents to have their children serve the punishment than conform to the policy. I see kids eat peanut butter and jelly day after day after day because their parents don't provide a lunch or lunch money and they don't fill out the free/reduced lunch forms.

Consider that the dress code is set forth by the school board, not the principals. While it is the principal's responsibility to enforce the dress code, your complaints on the dress code should go to the school board.

I don't even have school age children and I've thought this myself. Is Santa Cruz the new school in Tortosa? What I wonder is why the middle schools and high schools don't have a dress code, seems to me that it would be more effective at those levels than elementary.

The elementary schools have uniforms. The middle and high schools have a dress code. I think you're confused because of the incorrect terminology being used. This thread would be more aptly titled "Santa Cruz Not Enforcing Uniform Policy".

If you read the dress code Sandals are premitted but must be secured behind the heel. I also got The dress code sent home yesterday by one of the teachers saying that she wanted all parents to know of it.

I have the dress code right in front of me and it states "For safety reasons, shoes must be closed-toed and securely fastened in the back. No wheels allowed. Sandals are permitted but must be secured behind the heel."

My daughter has a pair, they look kinda like a dress shoe in front (closed), but its just a strap around the back of the foot, not a full back like a shoe.

Also I'm sure the dress sandals are cute for girls. But what kind of sandal is that way for boys??

I did a "boys sandals" search in yahoo and found quite a bit of sandals that are closed toed... here is just one link I found to give you some idea. This place is overly priced on some of the shoes though, but at least it shows the kinds of sandals out their.

But thats what Im talking about 'you talked to the teacher'... the teachers are not enforcing the rules as stated in the dress code, and thats my whole point... But hey, if the kids are not going to get in trouble for bending the dress code, then I dont see why my kid cant either. I just dont see the point in having one if they are not going to abide by it. I dont care, if my kid can wair open toed shoes, and colored jeans, and multi-colored undershirt... GREAT, Im happy with that... I just hate being told in the begining of class that its not allowed, and I go spend a fortune buying her all new stuff.
Justcurious: I dont expect a "change" by commenting on this with the forum, I just am on here to see if anyone else has noticed the same, and shares the same feelings as me. Should I not care about this situation? Am I making to much out of this? I dont know, thats the whole point of a forum, to get other peoples opinions (or help depending on the case) about such matters.

MaricopaMother,
I never critizized you for your concerns. In fact, I stated they were very valid. I never said you shouldn't ask questions on this forum. It is indeed a way to connect with others in the same situation. All I asked was if you had gone to the source that could help solve or resolve the issues, the principal. You did not indicate whether or not that had taken place and I was simply offering it as an idea to consider. As I stated (mea culpa) forgive me if that had already occurred. I did not mean to offend you.
