Alert | | I did not say you or any other parent was irresponsible. I stated that you and other out of boundary parents using Kyrene bus service were not taking responsibility for the transportation of your children to an out of boundary school. You do not pay school taxes in that district, yet you benefit from it. By the way school taxes in Kyrene Elementary, according to the AZ Republic this past week, were assessed at an increase of 17% on the tax bills just mailed to homeowners, the highest increase in the east valley. But of course open enrollment laws allow districts to have out of boundary students at the school districts discretion, so if Kyrene chooses to make its constituents be financially responsible for others children, that's just the way it is...for now.

Alert | | You are right, individuals up in the East valley are footing the bill for our children to attend "their" schools. I would be more then willing to help with that cost until MES gets their butts in gear !! But I have not been asked to foot that cost. I am also paying taxes to Maricopa school district of which my child does not attend. Also don't the schools get some sort of credit based on occupancy and out of bounary students? I am sure there is some benefit to the Kyrene side, not just the negative.

Alert | | But you should be happy that Kyrene open their doors to us here in Maricopa. Think about in my sons school alone there is about 150 kids from Maricopa. Those kids could be in MUSD and make the classes alot larger then they are already. Also I give back to Kyrene whether it is my time or money. I think if it bothers you that much maybe you should contact the State Education Board and have them change the laws on open enrollment and I would be more than happy to pay to have my children go to a school that benefits there needs.

Alert | G. Jetson, You are correct, under current tax law you can't re-route your property taxes to a different school district and that is probably a good thing or new schools would never be funded and maintained. If you felt so compelled to help, you could check what your assessment in Maricopa is and what the assessment would be for your home if it was in the Kyrene District and if there is a negative difference donate that to the Kyrene District (250.00 of which could be claimed as a tax credit). CandyGirl, No longer have children in school, but still a willing contributor of taxes for schools.

You are an irresponsible parent for 'choosing' that your child rides in a bus (no seat belts) up the 347 Maricopa Speedway.
Hopefully little Johnny can still walk after the inevitable bus crash.

Alert | hvgal, You stated that about 150 students attend from Maricopa the school your child attends in Kyrene. At the last MUSD Board meeting it was stated that Maricopa's current enrollment overall is about 200 short of being able to receive all of their money from the State Facility Board for building new schools. There are children going to more than one Kyrene school and Chandler and Tempe Union High Schools as well. People, we are perpetuating our own financial problems by not keeping the kids in their neighborhood schools and working with MUSD for improvement. Chandler, Kyrene, Mesa,Tempe, Higley (an unicorporated area), Queen Creek all have had to deal with explosive growth in the past 25 years. It's nothing new!!! The parents in Maricopa bailing out in mass quantities is new, because open enrollment makes it the easy way out.

Alert | | Okay, regarding the Kyrene bus stop in front of Native New Yorker.... why couldn't the bus driver just make a left, after entering the plaza? That would put him behind Circle K....relatively free of cars (parked or moving), and not blocking anyone?

Isn't the school paid on the number enrolled? That is why the 100th day of school is so important, from what I understand.
On another note, I have stuck it out here in this disctict since my now sixth grader was in the first grade. My sixth grader now attends Kyrene. My third grader still attends Santa Rosa.

Marni...yes. The school is paid by number of students enrolled.
I believe what justcurious is stating is that we are 200 kids (rather, tax dollars for those kids) shy of being able to afford to build another school, so the 150 or more who have left would go a long way in securing the tax money needed. When people pull their kids from this district, they also pull the money, which hurts all of the kids who remain and perpetuates the crowded classrooms that everyone hates, which coincidently, often is the very reason some kids are pulled.
