I just read an article on AYP(annual Yearly Progress). It seems like a bureaucratic black hole. There are three parts to it according to the Arizona Republic: one year growth OYG which means the child grew academically one year, attendance 95%, and "subgroups" over 40. All the Maricopa schools I saw had accomplished the one year's growth, the academic part. This is not only GREAT NEWS, it is the most important, knowing the children are learning and the teachers are teaching. All the Maricopa schools had the attendance rate they needed. It was the subgroups that were an issue. That means that for some reason not all the students in
that group were counted to make 95% tested. Could be as simple as a code error throwing out a test, or one absent student, or a special education student that needs to take a different test. None of those students count toward the percent tested in the subcategory so the school does not make AYP.

The districts in the article said they are trying to get the state to change the subgroup requirements to be more like other states because Arizona's requirements are so much tougher than others in areas that seem unreasonable.

Joy,

Thanks for posting this information. It was helpful to better understand what all these crazy labels mean.

Well then our schools should be able to do a lot better this year.

Anyone who advocates a "one" world government, a "one" social order, or a "one" enviroment is a communist trying to take away your freedoms. Nature celebrates diversity!

Another way to think of AYP is that there are 154 ways for the school to fail. That's how many categories there are for a school to fill out. The subgroups come into account if there are at least 40 children that fit into it. So you may see elementary schools pass AYP because they passed all the 154 parts but the middle schools might not because they qualify for more of those sections. Just wait until you have a school that has failed AYP but is found to be excelling according to AZlearns (that is the label that Arizona gives). THe 154 is an estimate it may be as high as 160. Passing AYP however is still a great accomplishment.
