08/15/2008 11:25 PM Alert

I just received an email from Legacy in regards to the start of the school year.  They are not postponing the start, but rather holding two sessions.  Here is a copy of the letter I received:

Legacy Parents and Students,

As you know, the first day of school is fast approaching.  We are excited for the school year to start and for all of the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead.  We would like to share with you an updated status on what is happening with our campus.

Unfortunately, the expansion to our current campus will not be completed by the August 25th deadline as was planned.  We will therefore be implementing the contingency plan as follows:

We will be holding two sessions per day of classes; an AM Session and a PM Session.

The schedule for double sessions will be as follows for K – 6 grades:

AM Session - 8:00 am - 11:00 am

PM Session - 11:40 am - 2:40 pm

Half of the elementary students will be assigned to attend the morning session and the other half of the students will attend the afternoon session. No lunches will be served on these days.

Conducting double sessions is a short term solution that allows the school year to start on time, and still meet the required hours of instruction for the year. This will allow us to start and end the school year as calendared without adding any extra days.

Junior High students will be attending their regular full day schedule from 7:50 am – 2:50 pm and will bring lunches from home during this interim solution.  Early Kindergartners who were already on a ½ day schedule will maintain their same schedule.

We recognize the burden this will place on some families with respect to child care.  We are in the process of making provisions to address the needs of those with no other options, however, we strongly encourage all to explore other child care solutions as our space and resources will be limited.  Additional details will be sent out once they are finalized.

We are doing our best to ensure that all students from a family will be assigned the same session.  Session assignments will be sent out early next week.

Legacy continues its "tradition" of Poor Management and Poor Communication!!

I received the email as well and am very disappointed AGAIN!!! Most of us work outside of Maricopa and now only have aone week to find before or after school care depending on which session our kids are in. Legacy continues to have a "tradition" of poor management and poor communication with the parents. I love the teachers there and think they are doing a great job which is why I kept my kids there even after they annouced that the new campus would not be ready again. Now with the news of 3 hour days for students and not letting us know which sessions our kids will be in until next week (school starts the week after) thus giving us no time to make arrangements, I feel that this is the last straw. I am going to Saddleback Monday morning to try to register my kids. I would love to keep them at Legacy because they offer great education but I don't trust anything they say anymore! Can anyone answer the following questions?

1) Is 3 hours of class work a day legal in the state of AZ?

2) When is the new campus going to be open or is it opening at all?

3) When are the extra portables going to be finished at the temporary campus?

4) What happened to the money from all the tax donations that the parents gave the school last year?

It really sucks...there's no other way around it or to say it. Its not really convenient for parents who work full time and then not really to give much more info than that letter....(which by the way, arrived at my mailbox at 11:08 PM!!). It is just really sad that they kinda stooped to that low...really people! 11:08 P.M.???

Unfortunately I don't know that there are any answers to those questions. They certainly didn't provide any in the letter did they?

Hey, what about a school board?? I am really anxious to find out about charter schools and school boards. I think its about time to start electing people into positions rather than just allowing them to have them.

Additionally, does anyone know how to find out who is the private funding source for the school? I just learned that the school receives public funds AND has a private funding source? Is this true? Who had that information? I think its about time we start contacting the private funding source about these concerns.

ucieng02- my son was enrolled at Legacy until the orientation where I was at the building contingency table and was not given a letter detailing the contingency plan. I guess I did not ask the correct question. I went the next day and registered my son at Saddleback. I am very happy with the school so far- my son's teacher and all the staff seem fantastic and everything has gone very smoothly.

What I'd like to know is which session would my child be attending? I keep reading the email and I can't find anything to tell me that my child would be attending one session or the other.

I also don't get how they can cram 6 hours of school into 3.....

I also pulled my son from Legacy cause they weren;t very informative and up to the last minute were insisting the building would be ready and now look at the mess they are in! Now its 1/2 day and I feel so bad for all the parents that work all day!

I totally agree with all of you. I wish that there was some way to fix all of this. The half day schedule will not affect us, my son is in 7 grade. I can only imagine how all of you feel. It would have been nice to know that there were problems earlier. Maybe this year some of us could get together as parents to brainstorm ways that could help the school. I hate to see so many parents pulling their children from Legacy. I really have faith that once the permanent campuses are finished this school will really excel. There really does need to be a better line of communication on the school's side. Maybe if enough people contact the principal with their concerns and frustrations, everyone will get the answers they need and deserve!!!

We too have difficulty with this schedule, but we are looking at the big picture here. This is temporary. The half days are meant to keep them from having to tack on days at the end of the school year. Everyone can choose to do what they want for their kids. Knowing that this isn't permanent makes the choice easy for us. We have seen the alternatives and the result of attendence at Legacy and we are going to stick it out. In 5 or 10 years this little bump in the road won't even matter. The level of education will.

I don't know anything about Legacy, but does this mean the teachers will be teaching twice as many kids since they are doing two sessions? If Legacy had really planned on being ready wouldn't they have already hired teachers for all of those children to go full day. What happens to those teachers now? Hopefully they will team teach and the kids will truly get everything they are supposed to in half the time. Any one know?

Its a mess. What if your two children are in two different sessions?? The note doesn't give any idea about what session your child will be in and what about those parents who need to make childcare arrangements?? One week is probaby not enough time to make arrangements for an indefinite amount of time. Wasn't this first campus supposed to be "temporary" which turned into a whole school year and now [it looks like] another school year?

I really don't get it and I am not trying to be a gloomy gus here and down on the school--but this is really ridiculous. Rikimaru! I know you are out here ready to speak...go ahead (I give you permission) .

I am still really interested in the school board situation and in the private funding source. Does anyone have any ideas?

@dbd, i dont believe there is a possibility of a school board with LTS. its a well known fact that A&B run the ship&anyone who doesnt want to be on board with their decisions can lump it or leave, not trying to be cynical but that is how it is, anyone will tell you that.

i dont really want to kick LTS while they are down, we all know how i feel about them so no need to rehash that. i am truly disappointed for all parents in their lack of transparency, and in my mind the fact that the delays were announced so late in the process is not an accident, and if it is, then i would go so far as to say that the planning&follow through of the new campus were very poorly done on the part of A&B, almost inept on their parts imo&borders on conspiracy knowing full well way before july that the project was not going to be completed as promised, but they could not truly state that for fear of even more parents pulling their kids when they had more than enough time to go elsewhere. lotta state $$$ tied to having kids stay with LTS, not to mention paying back the $$$ that is invested in the project. that is my 2 cents

I am worried and concerned- I will admit it.

I am going to call the AZ school board for charter schools to find out about school board information and I would think that the donor information would be public.

We were given the contingency plan information at the open house. While we aren't doing cartwheels, we are also not surprised by the news. I think they are probably as sad about this as anyone. In 10 years it won't matter.

My first priority is my child's education. We have thought long and hard about this, and as long as they provide an excellent education, we will cope with all the other crappola. It's not about us. It's about our kids and their education. If they cannot meet or provide the level of education we expect, we will cut and run, but half days will not kill us.

great attitudes by cyndi&thick, i agree. when or if all the projected campuses get completed&a routine gets established at LTS, this stuff will be forgotten but i guess thats just how things work. kids educations are whats important so lets see if they can pull through this difficult stretch to get things going like they planned all along.

There is a rumor, only a rumor mind you since Legacy's communication with parents is pathetic, that there is a parent\admin Q&A session tomorrow. does anyone know if this is true?

not a rumor. Per the email:

We would like to remind you of our Pacana Park Kickoff party tomorrow at 12 noon. We will have designated tent where administrators will be available from noon until 2 pm, to answer questions regarding the double sessions. In addition, administrators will be available at the school, Tuesday evening, from 6pm to 8pm.

Just wanted to mention that in case any 7th or 8th grade parents did not attend yesterday, there is a separate location that they are to attend classes during this temporary schedule... in the business center by the Electrical District #3 office, Oasis church, Little U preschool etc. I feel very bad for a family member of mine who was just told about this change... YESTERDAY. They will have to work with it, but I am sure this throws another hardship into the mix for some. Good luck, and I hope everything will get back to normal soon for these families, staff members, and most importantly the children!
