Alert | I am a parent of a Freshman student at MHS and wanted to send this little tid bit out to other parents. My child came home from school today talking about a movie that is being shown in his math class. He stated that the teacher is not returning next year and wanted to leave the students with a great impression. I am Christian and I am aware that there are many people of faith in this town and after watching "The Secret" my husband and I are infuriated that this movie is being shown without ever being sent home a permission slip. This movie is being deemed as a positive thinking documentary type, however it is not just that. It is teaching how we are in TOTAL control of our lives - that God is not part of the equation!! It is in it's own way it's own religion. Parents I realize everyone is allowed their own view and if you feel that ,though you are followers of Christ, you are OK with your children viewing this movie I am in no way judging you for that, I am however letting everyone know that while our children are not allowed to pray over their luches at school they are right now in one class being informed that everything is up to them and God is not in control. Since my husband and I received no information on this movie I am assuming no other parents did as well so I thought I would inform you.

Alert | It is interesting that you watched "The Secret" and found it to be anti-God. I have watched this movie also and I thought it was so positive, uplifting and hopeful. I never found it to be anti-God at all. It must be a matter of perception. The meaning of everything is the meaning you give it.

Alert | The Secret teaches that people are responsible for creating their own reality through their thoughts. It's not the same as looking on the bright side of life. It's not making lemons out of lemonade. This is not positive thinking, it's prosperity thinking and on par with the name it, claim it charismatic preachers on TBN.
In the book, the author blames the victims of crime for drawing it to themselves by their fears. Cancer, poverty, heartbreak, they are attracted by our thoughts. Do you see where this is going? How can you have compassion towards someone when they brought it all upon themselves? How can you truly believe this philosophy and still function in the real world where good people who think positively and have so many hopes and dreams are destroyed every day?
There are implications to this thinking that extend far beyond putting on a smile and facing the day. I can't say that it is any less bizarre than many mainstream religions, including my own, but it certainly does not belong in a public school.

Alert | "I doubt that religion can survive deep understanding. The shallows are its natural habitat. Cranks and fundamentalists are too often victimised as scapegoats for religion in general. It is only quite recently that Christianity reinvented itself in non-fundamentalist guise, and Islam has yet to do so (see Ibn Warraq's excellent book, Why I am not a Muslim). Moonies and scientologists get a bad press, but they just haven't been around as long as the accepted religions. Theology is a respectable discipline when it studies such subjects as moral philosophy, the psychology of religious belief and, above all, biblical history and literature. Like Bertie Wooster, my knowledge of the Bible is above average. I seem to know Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon almost by heart. I think that the Bible as literature should be a compulsory part of the national curriculum - you can't understand English literature and culture without it. But insofar as theology studies the nature of the divine, it will earn the right to be taken seriously when it provides the slightest, smallest smidgen of a reason for believing in the existence of the divine. Meanwhile, we should devote as much time to studying serious theology as we devote to studying serious fairies and serious unicorns. " Richard Dawkins

Alert | | Have you approached the school/teacher about this? I would too be very upset by this. Not only is in inappropriate, but it has nothing to do with Math. If you want to show a movie or show, show Numbers! I would definitely have a little chat...

Alert | Why does knowledge scare you people so much? Can't your child make an 'informed' decision, about his/her spirituality, without having you force your antiquated beliefs in god down his/her throat? The less your kids know, the easier they are to brainwash.

Alert | Irrelevant. It simply doesn't belong in school unless it is a part of a fair curriculum. I don't know about the OP but I expose my kids to other faiths and lifestyles without reservation. I have a problem, though, when someone teaches them something that I disagree with from a position of authority.

Did you get this mad when they taught about Darwinism in science class? It is teaching how we are in TOTAL control of our lives Wow a movie that teaches personal responsibility, we don't want our kids seeing that. I am however letting everyone know that while our children are not allowed to pray over their luches at school they are right now in one class being informed that everything is up to them and God is not in control. Your children ARE allowed to pray over their lunches but the school is not allowed to push religion and FORCE people to pray over their lunches. Since my husband and I received no information on this movie I am assuming no other parents did as well so I thought I would inform you.
Perhaps other parents know about this but have no problem with it. I fail to see the issue with this movie.

Alert | Mrs. A,
I think you are letting your Christian values cloud your judgment about this movie. I am a staunch Roman Catholic and had no problem with the movie or the book. The teacher should not have shown the movie with out it being cleared by the principal first and he didn't. But what is done done, drop it. You should be glad your son came home and talked to you about it.
Besides, it's the end of the year - they are cramming for finals and they are done....I remember watching movies in school 20 years ago...and it was Grease, that was far worse than The Secret.

Really? They should drop it? What if it was teaching sex ed without parental permission? Or meditating and chanting without parent permission? Or taking your child out of school to have a medical proceedure? They should just drop it because you are a staunch Roman Catholic and have no problem with it? I don't think so. So glad that you have a higher tolerance for this kind of thing. Yes, luckily this persons child came and talked to them about it after it happened. Many may not and would have to work out what they heard during a video in class on their own- and might get it wrong. These parents are concerned about what is allowed in school and what isn;t. What if this had been a Christian teacher and had shown a video to that end? There would be so much up in arms right now...this whole board would be on fire. Would you tell them to "drop it" as well? I don't think they should. We have to protect our children. There's already too much that they are exposed to as it is.

No teacher is doing his job if he is showing a movie that has nothing to do with his content area. You pay him to teach math.

Alert | I think everyone has seen a movie or two in a classroom, it's not unheard of. If everyday the teacher popped in a movie and played on his phone, then yes, that would be a problem. As for the movie, seriously, aren't there a lot worse things going on in the schools lately that we should maybe address first before this silly little issue? Your kid might get his ass kicked by one of these huligans leaving school, but you're worried about a motivational movie he or she saw in class? Maybe if the little fighting kids had seen the movie, they wouldn't be fighting so much??? Just a thought.

Alert | itsadryheat,
LOL, No one at the school has taken any child out of school to have a medical procedure done, I think you're going WAY overboard. If any of those kids felt the movie was inappropriate they would have walked out. Trust me they have walked out for much less. (As we have seen in the past)
The movie was not shown for the second day...none of the kids ran out of class in a fit of rage over what was shown (not in my daughters class anyway.) I'm sure some were busy texting or talking.
And the kid just came home a opened a dialog that that parent slammed shut. I feel sorry for that boy, if I were him I wouldn't come to them with anything in a very long time. They did damage to their relationship that may never be repaired over some stupid movie they probably didn't understand. Maybe If they had listened to his side of the story they would have realized he has great things to say, buy they are such closed minded "Christians" they don't want to hear it even if it's from their own son.
I mentioned I was catholic so people know that even though I too am a Christian, I can watch a movie like that and discuss it with my daughter and I may not agree with her and the movie we can still discuss it. Yes a permission slip should have been sent home, and any kid's parent who said no should have been sent to the library during class. That was the teacher's fault...but as I said it is water under the bridge, call the school so it doesn't happen again. But to continue to bitch about it on a message board instead of calling the school is counter productive.

The only true way to do this then would be to home school your children. Where you now are the only person of authority, but most parents have too little time. You run that risk when you have your kids taught by other people. Even with all the boards and control of the curriculum you cannot stop a “rogue” teacher from showing information or express an opinion you don’t agree with.
Then we should all approve the entire lesson plans of the class to make sure they are to our standards. Yeah Right. Cut out the middle man as I suggested above, or give your kids your reasons for disagreeing with what was said. Because they will get this information no matter what, it’s all in how everyone handles it afterwards. | | "Don't mistake lack of talent for genius"
