That particular skateboard...because I chose all the parts personally, cost $154 and some change! Baker/ Jim Greco deck,  Thunder black n white trucks, Baker wheels, and some kinda fancy, costly bearings.

pms.

It truly is a sad and unwarranted experience your son (at no fault of yours or his has had to face....)

I had a similar situation years ago and while it may be of no comfort to your son right now...I explained to my child..sometimes children that take things that don't belong to them is because they think it will replace the attention..affection and love that is missing in their lives...

LOL

It breaks my heart when something likes this happens. Of course, we all will eventually learn that there is some really messed up stuff that happens in life. I just wish that it could be a little later on in life for everyone when they finally do have their first bad life experience. Your son is probably a good kid or you wouldn't be getting him a custom-designed skateboard. It's a shame that he has to suffer a loss because someone else doesn't have morals or values.

Society has made too many accommodations for those who don't follow the rules and the academic community is the worst institution there is about just throwing up their hands and giving up. Those who do follow the rules and practice good citizenship are the first to be penalized while those who would commit crimes just find another way to practice their trade. For example, a good kid gets expelled for giving her friend a Midol because there are others who sell Ecstasy at school. Good kids can't have lockers for their books and jackets because some kids use them to warehouse weapons and drugs. There are inner-city schools now requiring clear plastic back packs. Zero tolerance is a way of saying, "We don't want to think about the individual circumstances of an incident. We're educators, not judges or cops."

School is a micro society. It has the same set of issues and problems that exist in general society. As such, those in charge need to find a way to administer that society fairly and effectively. I would rather not have to deal with personnel issues where I work. If someone misses work for the third day because of a sick child, I could just send them their paycheck with a termination notice. Done deal. Someone has a problem at home and their performance suffers, rather than talk with them, zero tolerance: Fire them. Needless to say, society wouldn't (and shouldn't) allow that. As a manager, I have a dual role in dealing with employees as well as dealing with other business issues.

Lees2 is right. Have the students and parents sign a waver that lockers and treat lockers as public property. No expectation of privacy, no Fourth Amendment issues. Bring the dogs through now and then to send the message home. Search the lockers when there's probable cause and also have regular, routine, inspections. Learning to live in an organized, free society is part of the educational process. In my estimation, it's one of the biggest parts.

No walk through metal detectors either. Someone wants to come to school wearing a dew rag and looking like a gang banger, take them aside and run the wand over them individually. Don't humiliate everyone because a few parents don't bother looking at how their kid looks when he leaves for school in the morning.

Lockers cost too much? In order to save money, let's get rid of some of the administrators and superintendents and go to a Unified School District. Those millions we save will go a long way toward educating our kids or increasing teacher salaries. Of course, the M.Ed. and Ph.D. folks will need to get a job that may involve some heavy lifting. Or, better yet, maybe a job in the classroom actually educating someone.

My point: deal with the issues individually and punish people singularly rather than collectively. That might just result in someone learning to be accountable for their actions.

Thank you to everyone who read this post to begin with and Thank you even more if you actually kept an eye out for the skateboard that was stolen.  As much as I wanted to find his stolen board...I finally had to except the idea that it's gone and I will probably never get it back for him.  I will keep looking at every kid I see on a skateboard, but I went out today and helped him get a new one...not quite as nice as the "old- new one" but he's happy again.....Thanks again everyone!!

Kids take way to much NON SCHOOL stuff to school nowadays.

Cell phones, Ipods, Playstations, skateboards, and other crap.

They should leave it all at home.........they are going to school not a stayover....

and you parents buy your kids way too much stuff they don't need, and the majority of you don't have the money to spend....but lets spend the money anyway. keep on getting into debt

buying crap you don't need,

with money you don't have

to impress people who don't care.

Let us all help this country get deeper in debt.

~Leehopper~?????

Do I know you? Certainly one would assume you know me after the statements you've made in regards to my person, my finances, my children, my need to impress others, and your opinion of my parenting skills.

Let me clear things up for you.......

1) Schools have changed as much as the generations since you might have last attended 6th grade.

2) What I spend my money on would be  no business of yours, because

3) Your opinion or "what you think of me"  will not keep me awake at night with worry.

4) Who are you to comment on anyones parenting skills......you need to look at yourself before you look down at other people.  When you reach perfection~ then maybe you'll have the right to pass judgement.

**Newsflash**  I'm not in debt or even close- neither the state nor country pay any bills for me-(so you'll need to explain to me how me buying my son 2 skateboards has put our country deeper in debt?)

If you have any other assumptions....I'll be glad to respond to those as well!!!

Actually, buying those two skateboards helped stimulate the economy at a time that we really needed it. You're a patriotic American, PMS!

Actually, I sort of take the approach that if you meet the objectives in the classroom, you can have a whole myriad of privileges and toys. Feel free to take your Gameboy or MP3 player for the long bus ride to or from school. Pull it out in class or let it become an issue that I have to arbitrate with the school and it will stay at home, most likely in my custody. Privileges and prized posessions are the rewards we earn.

MWMS is a bad place. The principal is more concerned about the appearance of things than the school or the kids. This was the lady in my daughters orientation told us (everyone there) she didn't have and never had a gang problem. I wonder if she still thinks that after everything that happens... oh wait she does because she refuses to address real issues...
I pulled my child from there:

After she reported being harassed by a child not long after that was attacked by this girl while she was walking to a class.
Several times had items stolen
When she was again having issues with other female students she asked if they (all the girls involved) could sit down together with councilors and try to work things out. Their response Not a good idea no real reason why trying to work out things was not a good idea.
There are a few really good teachers there just really bad administration.

The original poster, please know that this school is not indicative of all its students. Their are some really bad kids with parents to match. The worse the person who stole you child's skateboard would get is In school suspension be on the same campus and available to take our their aggression of being in ISS on your child.

Its sad that more people aren't applaud its a given things will be stolen... wow how sad is that.

Which 'lady' told your daughter's orientation that?

Items stolen?  What did the police say when you called them?

Attacked?  What did the police say when you called them?

The way I handled my son taking expensive things to school. I told him that I did not condone him taking the item to school. I explained why I didn't want the item to go to school, that it was my son's responsibility to care for the item. Should said item be lost, stolen or damaged, that item will not be replaced by me. I already got him one, I won't be getting another. End of story. So far the item has not gone to school.
