I used to work for Walmart, and I didn't think it was too bad myself. I got paid overtime, when it was allowed, I received benefits after 90 days, and after 7 years of service, I broke the $12/hr mark (starting from 6.50 in 1997). I started there while I was still living at home in VA., and when I eventually moved out here for school, it was enough money to pay for a single bedroom apt. (about 500/month in 2000) It's definitely not something to live on if you have a mortgage and single income that's for sure. But at the time, it was perfect for me while I was going to school. They worked with my hours, which changed every semester, and I worked 40 hours the whole time. Its not that bad a place to work for.

Everyones definition of a living wage are different. Unless I ran the store, I dont think this WalMart could provide me with a living wage. That said, there are tons of people in this town that are earning ZERO wages simply because there are no jobs in town. McDonalds took in over 100 applications in their first week of advertising. Does McDonalds provide a living wage? Not in my book.

My point is that WalMart may not be your ideal company, but they are a good solid company that treats its employees fairly for the job they are doing. Does that mean I think every supervisor in every WalMart is perfect? No. The overwhelming majority of stores do care for their employees and they offer local communities a place for people to work that otherwise wouldn't be able to find jobs. Rather than bash WalMart, we should be thanking them for coming to our community and offering jobs to many people that probably can't even afford transportation to get to Chandler for work.

I shop at WalMart and I'm proud to say that I support those individuals that work there because they want to and those that have to work there. Its better than supporting them with my tax dollars via welfare. WalMart will likely be the largest employer in town for a while and we should do our best to support our neighbors, especially those that work at WalMart. This store will probably be operated by locals.

If you think waiting for Target/Costco/Sam's Club is worth the wait, think again. We've got a lot of people in this town that need jobs NOW. Not when these stores find us on the map.

For those of you bashing ACE, I have something to say. Our ACE has what I consider to be the best service I've seen at ANY hardware store. That service is worth something, even if it equates to slightly higher prices. The people are always friendly, helpful, and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure their customers are satisified. Sure, they dont have the largest selection. However, they are local and there are lots of items priced the same or lower than Home Depot in Chandler. I just hope thier service is enough to survive the assault Home Depot is going to bring to town.

Absolutely, absolutely agree on ACE. Not only has ACE saved me from making a lot of trips to Chandler, the service there has been great. I'm also amazed at how much they actually DO carry given the size of the store. I appreciate them not just being here but also trying to make the most of what they can offer.

if it wasnt for the service you get at ACE...once Home Depot or Lowes comes...then they will fade away...even with their great service....with the crappy economy some people may skimp on service to save some money at the big box places which would put Ace out of business eventually anyway

I don't think ace has too much to worry about. There are plenty of ace stores in chandler and gilbert that are surviving with direct competition from lowes, depot and even other ace stores.

Like Phil Gramm rightly says, we are whiners.
Prices rise, we whine.
We get low price stores, we still whine.
We know that a "Pantene" shampoo is 3 dollars in Walmart and 4 dollars in Target and we still want Target
There is this huge posting going on under "General Chat" , - "belt tightening in Maricopa" where our neighbours really are trying all means to save
and then we still whine, that we DONT want a low price store.
Walmart's pharmacy prices can beat anybody
Consider this, i am having a headache at 10 PM, no tylenol or advil at home,
Would i buy one at Frys for 4 dollars or for 1 dollar at Walmart or wait for the next day for a SUPER CLEAN Target

I will not step a foot into this wal-mart, or any other wal-mart. I've been wal-mart free my whole life, and I intend to stay that way!

I Also CANNOT WAIT for Wal Mart and honestly, Just a girl, if you don't go to Wal Mart it'll just make the lines at the cashier that much shorter for the rest of us.

Have you been out to queen creek lately? Its been about 14 months since i was on Rittenhouse. When i was there last time the road was torn up, and there was a lot of dirt lots. I was out there on friday and was terribly surprised to find a walmart, super target, staples, office max, petco, petsmart, cost plus world market, tilly's and many more that I'm forgetting. I bet there are more stores that I haven't listed than i have. That trip gave me some confidence that once the ball starts rolling here we will get some good development going as well.

Ace is like a "hardware convenience store" -- perfect when I have one or two items to pick up and don't want to wander around Home Labyrinth for a half-hour looking for the items.
