I am not against the park project, I am just against the way it was done or seems to have been done. We spent thousands of dollars on Polls and studies that told us that the Park we have would be ok for the next 4 years of growth... Guess what...it turns out that it isn't. That's fine...
I just want to know if the deal with the church was made before the church bought the land (which is a problem for me) or after they bought the land (couldn't have been. Because the church doesn't OWN it now. Which would have been alright.)
Sinbad,The deal is going like this. Church buys 15 acres of land from developer. Church closes escrow and owns 100% of the parcel. City and church agree to sell 10 of the 15 acres to city along with a mutually beneficial use agreement. This sound like a normal real estate transaction to me.

Alert | Letsfixit, You seem to be the only intelligent person on this thread. At least you appear to understand how governmental funds work. Many people don't. How does everyone think all of their perks are paid for. It's called "OUR LOCAL TAX FUNDS." We don't automatically receive millions of dollars from the state to help Maricopa become a world class city. If the people want to p**s away governmental funds on non-important matters so be it.
I don't plan on being here much longer to contribute to those ever diminishing governmental funds. | | I previously had 1 trillion posts!

Alert | When did the city spend thousands of dollars on before Pacana was built? I think you have your facts mixed up.

Alert | Thanks for your support! I don't understand how these folks think you turn the tap on and money flows! I went on to the city website to look up the budget and could not get the most up to date figures. I will be pressing the City to release the numbers. Wouldn't surprise me if the State Auditor doesn't get involved to see if there's any personal gain or undue pressure.... I'd be gone too but the market is saturated with empty houses and yet the city and PLANNING just keeps issuing permits! What a racket! They call that good governance!

Alert | LetsFixIt - I do not know where you received your information on how municipal governments are run, but your last post makes is sound as if the city is hiding their budget figures. The City held public meetings and the council voted on the annual budget for this fiscal year, last year, prior to July 1st. If you were interested in the budget, I am sure you attended, as some of us did. At tonight's council meeting there will be a presentation on the budget for possible amendments. This is how the process works, and for once, the City is handling the process correctly. You also do not know how the Auditor General's office works either, as Ms. Davenport's office would not investigate a situation such as this. The City has capital improvement funds that are collected over time, and set aside for public infrastructure improvements, construction and purchase. Although housing starts are way down, the city does not spend every single dollar they receive each year, as that would be foolish. Funding for land acquisition is in the capital improvement budget and funds, and since there has been no prior use of these funds, those monies are still available for use. I recommend you attend some of the council meetings to become more familiar with how city's operate before you go making accusations that have no merit.

Yes, to park expansion
Mark this day on your calendar, I agree with drummer.

Alert | | Yes, for the park expansion!! Some day soon this city will be very big with a huge population and we will wish the city were able to purchase land for a park for 70K an acre. People on this forum complain about vacant houses and foreclosures, I got news for you this is happening in every community in the country especially the wealthy ones. Wake up we need to keep growing so we could get more business out here, which will happen! I appreciate the fact that our government is not thinking of them selves first and are bearing working in the trailers. We need more stuff that is appealing to families and snowbirds, parks, restaurants, stores, golf courses and as someone said on previous forums minor league baseball stadium and river walks, some type of attraction to draw people here so eventually we will have a larger tax base for our citizens.

Alert | Seems to me we could spend the money more wisely...maybe getting people to actually set up a business in the empty buildings and keeping them here. Yet we have another new building with nothing in it! We need a city hall, fire dept's a library,ect.... A park for kids to play..come on!! This town will not survive if we do not keep people here and have viable places of business.

Alert | | With the usage of the city park it is a definate need. As always there are lots of needs, but at least with a park there is someplace to have little league, soccer, take the kids and keep them off the streets and causing problems after school. I would support a park first, then the other needs being met after that.

Alert | Just my humble opinion......but I would much rather the city, or any city, spend tax money on public use than spend it on making politicians more comfy. You can get the same amount of work out of a double-wide as you can out of another type of building. As for cosemetics, it will take more that a new city hall to make this town's appearance look any better. Dirving down 347 through Maricopa looks almost the same as drivng through Gila Bend. A new city hall will not change it, it will only make people wonder why the town spent so much money on it.
Now if 347 from Garvey down past the tracks and MCG Hwy to the town limits get a complete make-over THEN I am all for a new city hall. For now I would much rather have the increased parks and facilities. That benefits everyone. | | Anyone who advocates a "one" world government, a "one" social order, or a "one" enviroment is a communist trying to take away your freedoms. Alert | The reason a city hall is not under construction has nothing to do with spending money on parks. It has a lot to do with former Maricopa City Coucilman Steven Baker bringing a deal to the table which would have netted him a cool $400,000 in commissions while having the city pay more for land than it was worth. The resulting chaos cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees to the seller. More importantly, it wasted valuable time that should have been spent evaluating one of the many potential city hall sites that didn't involve a council member making money.

Alert | You're right! YES YES YES TO MORE PARKS!!!!!Yes to buying land from Churches who don't hold title to the land too!! They need our City's help!!! Throw in a parking lot for them while we're at it!!
We really don't need a library. The one we have is awesome! Nobody really reads here anyways!
And why waste money on landscaping the John Wayne Parkway cause no one really cares how it looks! Anyone who considers buying here or starting a business wants the cheapest home they can get.
Why would we spend money on a Senior Center? They have plenty of stuff and have lived their lives as you've pointed out, and hey they won't be around much longer to complain about how their money is spent. That's your job to spend it for them!
As for a City Hall or Art Center, why bother! Do we really need all those employees anyways? We'll fire all the staff like Planning and Fire, who needs them ! They only get in the way of the developers building more homes that will keep the prices nice and low. for more future investors.
Yep, thinking about it...we should spend every last dime on dirt for parks! That's the only thing that truly makes a City great!
So YES to nothing but PARKS!!!!!
