What is a dutch oven? A Dutch oven is a large, heavy casserole pan, most often made of enamel-covered cast iron. It has a tight fitting lid that holds in moisture, so it is primarily used for braising and stewing tough meats and vegetables. It can be used efficiently on the stovetop, but is more often used in the oven, where it holds and radiates the oven's heat evenly throughout the pot. - (Ochef.com) HAHAHAHAHAHA!! | | <--- Say his name anyway way you want, but it's pronounced(nov 08) Mr. President.

Alert | Here's what we do guys...We put aside our differences, hold our noses, scoop as much poop as we can into as many truck beds as we can round up, use our Ninja skils to sneak into Old Town Scottsdale in the middle of the night, unload our prize behind all the yuppie clubs and wait for the Friday night crowd to enjoy our little gift to them.
The dairy may lose a little money from their fertilizer proceeds, but they might enjoy a good laugh and give us a hand.

Alert | | Well everyone here seems to be content with the stench of rotting cow turds. Nobody is fighting it and everyone says they are used to it. I guess we have a bit of a social class issue here when people like poop smell.

I guess we have a bit of a social class issue here when people like poop smell. Cows serve several useful functions. Of what use are your two little rat-dogs? As parasites that serve no useful function and produce poop every day, would not getting rid of them be the socially responsible thing to do?

Alert | Give it up people - it stinks here and it stinks bad due to the feedlots and Hickman's chickens. Move out you say? When was the last time you saw a house in Maricopa that "sold"? So we hang in here and hope for a brighter future with more stores, better roads, and a real estate market that begins to bounce back even a little. I'm not expecting any real progress until at least the end of 2008.

Alert | One thing to remember is that (as much as I don't enjoy breathing them in) the cow/chicken smells were here the whole time things were booming. They haven't changed between then and now, so they weren't responsible for the slow-down--that was due to the real estate market in general. That being said, I think the city would be much more attractive to potential residents if it smelled nicer. Upon telling people from other parts of the valley that I live in Maricopa, they've literally responded "that's the place that smells, right?" So we've definitely been getting a reputation...
However, a lot of the antagonism towards Denna comes from her own antagonism towards others--particularly those in the farming industry who have been out here many years before the rest of us were. She has talked about "driving out" the farmers, and has broadly referred to those with any sort of agricultural/rural background as "bumpkins" and "yokels." That attitude, along with making some pretty ridiculous statements (i.e., obviously not thought through or supported by facts), hasn't exactly endeared her to others on this forum.
If anyone can come up with some practical ways of alleviating some of the smell (other than waiting for things to grow and some farms to be bought out), I'm onboard.

Alert | Well it is exactly my issue. They don't do anything to contain the stench. If anything it has been getting worse. It usually doesn't smell during the day, but lately it smells 24x7. It's gross and the farmers are to blame. I think they need to move on for the good of everyone here. As a society, we can work on ways to make them move. Increase their taxes. Reduce their tax benefits. Go vigorously after illegal immigrant workers and fine them (the farms) accordingly. Target them with EPA measures. There is legal recourse to what these people are doing to us. They are laughing in the face of the many every single day as they pile up tons of sewage.
Houses in Maricopa are the hardest hit in the valley by far. It is simply because the RR is doing more trains and the farmers are piling up the poop daily and making it smell. I can't wait until all the big shopping goes in around Casa Grande Hwy and all the Rancho people start getting stuck in hour long traffic jams trying to go one mile. 72 trains a day with an average of 3 minutes per train is 216 minutes of train. With the traffic delays, it is probably more like 5 minutes per train or 360 minutes (6 hours of traffic jams a day). With our politicians selling us out and not doing anything to fix it, just expect the worst. There is no hoping for the best.
It is only a matter of time before people start getting sick because they are forced to keep their windows closed because of the stink around here. A few class action lawsuits will teach big cow and chicken a thing or two. They aren't wanted here by anyone.

I say we just take the "Homer Simpson" approach and dump it all in the Lake. Then Schwartsenegger can put a bubble over our town. Anyone hear me?

Hi CliffInAZ, there is a way to contain the smell, a methane recovery plant. They have one at the 101/202, that's what those round buildings are. The methane is used for generating electricity, which is what needs to be done here. This isn't only a smart idea as far as green technology, it would be one heck of a money maker. Can you imagine, a second power company here, making money hand over fist with the natural production of manure? If I had the money, I'd do it. Deena (with two ee's)
