Alert | My hubby and I moved here 5 years ago, when Rancho El Dorado was the only place to buy. We are still here. This is a very nice city, if you give it a chance. True, certain things are not available here that are in Chandler etc. But you should have known that when you moved here. 4 Months is hardly a time frame for getting frustrated.
You should have taken a whiff out here five years ago! You could not leave a single window open for any length of time. Yet, it passed. OMG, it was disgusting! I'm glad to say that I only smell it once in a while now.
There used to be a lottery for housing out here, 3 years ago, when they cut out investors and took waiting lists. Things all across the country have taken a fall since then. It may take awhile, but it will turn around, someday.
In the meantime, dont think that everyone in Maricopa is mean hearted. A lot are frustrated. This growing town thing is hard to handle, especially when the only road into Phoenix gets stopped by an accident almost every other day! There are really a lot of nice people. I, myself, go to Chandler at least twice a week. I am sure that if you need a little assistance, or almost anything at all, then you will find a lot of help here on 85239.com.
If you are still feeling down, then feel free to PM me. I work from home, so I am on the pc a lot. Too much, in my opinion!

Alert | | I was recently talking with a neighboor of mine and surprisingly over half of the people on my street are not liking the move here and most of them have been here for over a year. I think there are alot more people that hate it down here then will let you know. I think its ok not a great town but houses are cheap and i work in casa grande and theres no way in hell ill live there! This town just needs a angle to sell itself something like verado has. But i would highly recomend not watching a cardinals game because your just going to get more depressed lol

There probably are. But it is worth remembering that a fair amount of people are mad at other factors and are taking it out on the town. For instance, some of the folks who bought at the height of the market, took out huge home equity loans, and are now fretting about home values are pretty darned unhappy in general. Folks like that aren't going to give you an accurate estimation of this town because they're blinded by their own feelings of misgiving. That's natural, it just needs to be seen for what it is. :-)
You're right though. This town might not be great, but it is definitely "okay." :-) I think with time, and some new leadership, we will be just fine.

Alert | | It sounds like you made a poor judgement call moving to Maricopa giving your current situation. I have been in Copa for two years and love my home. Does is suck that my equity has dropped almost 50k, Yes, but this is happening all over the country. Do, I wish there were more stores, sometimes, but I have saved so much money not being able o shop for things I truly can live without. I lived in South Chandler for five years that hardly had any stores and look at it now, I sometimes think I should have stayed in the area, but it is less than a 30 mintue drive, so its not that big of deal. This weekend I had no reason to leave Maricopa and it felt great to take a break from the city. When I moved to Copa there was just Basha's with Fry's soon to open. No banks, no Panda's, no Jack in the Box and look at us now. Its easy to focus on what's wrong instead of counting our blessings. Make it a good one....

Alert | | Have you ever considered taking up a hobby such as creative writing or reading? Both activities are known to be both relaxing and enjoyable and can povide a pleasant escape from one's daily routine. People on this site seem to enjoy the "Second Hand Pages" Bookstore, I'm sure they can provide you with interesting and reasonably priced reading materials, (although I have never been there myself). Also, if you have policical views you are just dying to share with all of cyberspace, you can always start your own blog. Nothing too radical though, or you could end up on some sort of government list.

Alert | | Heck, now everyone can get mad at me. I dislike it in Maricopa also. We've lived in the Hidden Valley area for over 20 years, and we used to love it that there were only a few stores in town and very little traffic. It was just fine with me to have very few retail places. Those were the days when you could drive all the way from Hidden Valley to I-10, there were no traffic lights, and you met maybe one or two cars on the way. And I've never minded the smell of cow poo when we drove near town, although where our house in Hidden Valley is, you can never smell it. | | Proud conservatives happily living on our acreage in the beautiful mountains of Hidden Valley with no HOA.

Alert | singinsunqueen is an alter. I will bet my hard earned money on it. Not sure who yet - if I can get my buddy NTD to help me with the writing analysis, we can probably figure it out.

Umm.. if by 'alter' you mean alternate screenname for someone else you're used to seeing here, I can assure you that she's not.
Amazing, the way someone says something that you don't want to hear or don't agree with and you immediately react by attacking (i.e., by implying that the person must be someone you know intentionally being deceptive by posting under an alternate screenname). I guess it's ok to state an opinion about something as long as it's in agreement with your own. You know, it is possible to disagree with someone without casting aspersions on their character because their point of view is different from your own(e.g., like some of the other responses here).

Alert | Thanks CliffinAZ
Yes, I myself can assure you I am NOT an alter, although after reading the posts, I have thought about not posting here again. I have read all the posts for this thread, I have just chosen not to respond back since I now know you have to be very careful what you say here or you will be verbally attacked by others if they don't agree.
And yes, in response to what someone said, I didn't think moving here carefully enough. The decision was driven by the need for lower cost housing due to hefty medical bills and other expenses associated with chronic illness and for my hubby and I to survive financially. I know have learned the hard way that, while beautiful, rural living/Maricopa is not a good idea for someone who needs services near by and can't wait a few years for these things to be in place. Thank you all for teaching me that! (yes, us NYers sure do have a sarchastic sense of humor, dont we??
This is my last post in response to this thread. You can all continue to post and bash me for my thoughts... have lots of fun. Thank you for those of you that have been supportive and have offered your kind words. It's nice to know you are out there!!

Alert | I don't understand why someone comes on to a public forum, explains that they made a major life decision without researching it first, lists a whole myriad of issues and ailments, and then threatens not to post here again after unsuccessfully soliciting others to join in their misery of having made such an uniformed choice.
I, for one, enjoy living here and I have never regretted moving here.

I don't think anyone wants to demean you, bash you, or hurt you in any way. Rather, I think this should be considered a fairly expectable response to a post that solicited opinions from folks across the spectrum.
Though many people may not understand how you wound up in this predicament, that does not mean we do not support you in your battles with your health problems, and that does not mean we don't wish you the best. The mere fact that we may disagree is secondary to the fact that we're all in this together.
If this is truly your last post, I think that is a shame. There is plenty to gain from the folks around here, if you can get past the knee-jerk reaction of wanting to disappear.
Either way, best of luck to you! :-)

P.S. I thought you were from NY, maybe the rude behavior is just an attempt to make you feel at home! | | Liberalism and capitalism address themselves to the cool, well-balanced mind. They proceed by strict logic, eliminating any appeal to the emotions. Socialism, on the contrary, works on the emotions, tries to violate logical considerations by rousing a sense of personal interest and to stifle the voice of reason by awakening primitive instincts. -- Ludwig Von Mises

In that regard her/our frustration as much as anything, is that the timeline for businesses coming here seems to be getting pushed back--due partly I'm sure to the housing market/economy (e.g., fewer people moving in than projected impacts when businesses are ready/willing to move in), but also to what's been going on with the leadership of this city. Hopefully that starts to change with the upcoming elections....
DesertDweller, the reason I know that singinsunqueen is not someone else's 'alter identity' is because she's my wife. And actually, we did put a lot of thought into purchasing a house and where we would move; we were looking at different areas for nearly a year and weighing plusses vs. minuses, thinking what areas ultimately had the most potential to appreciate in the long run, thinking about the relative drawbacks of buying vs. renting, buying now vs. the unknowns/risks of waiting (e.g., rising interest rates making things a lot less affordable, fallout from the subprime crash), etc. Moving here seemed to be the best choice we could make given our options.
Something that changed since then is that my wife's illness (a chronic condition for years) took an unexpected sudden and major turn for the worse--very soon after we moved out to Maricopa. Literally a few weeks after we moved out to Maricopa her body crashed--to the point of several emergency room visits and her being completely unable to walk for close to a month (being in a wheelchair, unable to even get out of bed unassisted)--far worse than anything she's ever experienced with this illness. Fortunately, her walking's gotten better; unfortunately, her exhaustion and some of her other symptoms are at an utterly crippling level. On a day-to-day basis, this makes things really frustrating and difficult. The twenty minute drive to "town" that was simply an inconvenience when we moved here became insurmountable for my wife due to the worsening of her condition. In retrospect, maybe we should have planned for the worst possible scenario with her health and not moved out here--although we didn't have reason to believe things were going to take such a turn for the worse.
I do believe that things are going to turn around here in a couple of years once the housing situation improves and once Maricopa irons out its growing pains in terms of the leadership here, but in the couple of years until that happens it's a very bad, frustrating situation for someone who can no longer take more than very local drives, work, or even engage in many hobbies due to complications from illness--like being stuck in house arrest.
Also (again) one thing that we admittedly had no clue about before we came here and are very disappointed about what has been going on with our city council. I have no doubt that has had a pretty negative impact on business--how could it not? I'm hopeful that we can all make a change during elections and clean some house, but at the same time I wonder how valuable ground and time the city lost due to all of this.

Alert | I've been here for nearly two years, and while I wouldn't go so far as to say I regret moving here, I do wish we had stayed "in town". Everything we have ties to (family, friends, jobs, doctors, etc) are "in town", we practically live "in town" on the weekends to run errands, do our visiting, etc. We moved from a neighborhood with incredible schools, and neighbors that actually came outside to socialize. The neighbors we have now are so unfriendly (despite our best efforts to get acquainted) that if my house were on fire, I don't think they'd even notice. I do miss faster response times from emergency personnell, but I try to remember that Maricopa is still growing. I don't like being so far from the hospital I'm supposed to go to (Banner Desert), but that's because my insurance won't let me go anywhere else, not a Maricopa issue. I like my house, and my neighborhood (for the most part) and I've figured out which Maricopa businesses I will use and which ones I won't use again. I know that Maricopa is experiencing growing pains, and have many kinks to work out. I'm gonna be here for at least 5 more years, so I really have to make due. I'd have to figure all this stuff out if I moved anywhere though, not just Maricopa. | | If you can't spot the loser, it might be you
